Baulder's Gate Dark Alliance 1&2

Edit: For a different vibe, Super Monkey Ball Deluxe is a lot of multiplayer fun too

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Oh hell yes, dont sleep on these OP. Theyre ARPGs, not CRPGs. Super fun, my friends and I played them for ages. Id love a modern one...

There was a Marvel game like them too but I can't remember the name

Champions of Norrath 1&2 were made by the same devs, but in the EverQuest universe instead of D&D and are worth checking out too.

[–] A_Union_of_Kobolds@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Oh yeah! I forgot about those, lots of fun

[–] JayFonduh@lemmy.org 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Time crisis yo.

Also Time Splitters more importantly

[–] Godort@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Timesplitters 2 is a masterpiece

[–] JayFonduh@lemmy.org 2 points 1 month ago

Literally accidentally generationally defining.

SOCOM can't be beat, Star Wars Battlefront was also fun, Ratchet and Clank was a classic for me.

[–] Kathmandu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I love Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2 for the win.

[–] IonTempted@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

I have them on steam and I still boot up Galactic Conquest from time to time, but playing it with a friend on the controller was amazing.

Star Wars Battlefront 1 was the first PC game I ever played and loved.

[–] Kathmandu@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 month ago

I bit the bullet a couple years ago and rebought the physical Xbox versions, but then I have to pull out the 360 to play them.

[–] capt_wolf@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

SOCOM kicked ass. One of my first miked experiences. Nothing more fun than sniping people in their spawn with an m4 in the jungle map and then hearing people whine that you're cheating after. "Stop sticking your head out of the gap in the middle of spawn and I won't shoot it." Paintball in the oil rig warehouse... Shotgun duels on the roof of the desert map... Good times

I love The Warriors, but my favorite PS2 games were the Tekken, Soulcalibur, and Tony Hawk games... wait, are they considered multiplayer or just versus?
Tony Hawk has cooperative modes though.

[–] JayFonduh@lemmy.org 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

If you had a friend over once, they were considered multiplayer.

[–] PiraHxCx@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I never had a PS2, I was the friend over :)

[–] krakenx@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

Soul Calibur 3 has a campaign mode that's really good. It's single player, but my roommate and I played it co-op by each making our own characters, choosing their movements, and then playing the fights for our characters.

I recently did Samurai Warriors with a friend and that was a blast. Kind of a golden era for musou games. SW2 and Dynasty Warriors 5 and 6 all solid.

I also enjoyed Gauntlet and the Metal Slug ports. I think that was PS2, at least.

Dokapon Kingdom

It's like Mario Party, but with RPG elements. Start with classes like warrior, mage, and thief, and more classes unlock later on. You use dice to decide how many spaces you move around the map, and fight bandits and orcs and stuff. Every now and then the king/princess will give a quest to go and take back some stolen things from a bandit. First person that can land on that space fights the bandit to get the loot back, and then you have to bring it back to the castle. Other players can land on your tile and fight you to steal the loot. Towns around the map have a boss monster and if you can kill it you "control" the town and get passive income, other players can steal the town for you. Mario Party is known for ending friendships, but it doesn't even compare to the levels of cutthroat betrayal that happen in Dokapon. 10/10 highly recommend

Hey, this sounds super interesting and I had never heard of it before. I collected PS2 games for a while so thought I had a good idea of what was out there for a while but then it always becomes evident how vast the catalogue is when things like this pop up that I hadn't heard of but sound great!

Thanks for the recommendation!

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 month ago

Time splitters 2

Redfaction 1 with its destructible environments was ground breaking. My brothers and I used to build tunnel forts in the canyon map, but that might not be too interesting these days.

[–] juliebean@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

two that i remember quite fondly for their co-op gameplay were X-men Legends, and Champions of Norrath.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Champions of Norrath and Champions: Return to Arms were fucking STELLAR for local co-op. I never see them mentioned. I should bust out my PS2 and go through a run of each with my partner.

[–] juliebean@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

i never played return to arms, but same. i think my brother ended up with our copy of CoN, but i should see if the local retro game shop has a copy.

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 month ago

Return to Arms was everything Norrath was, better! It totally still holds up today! Tons of QoL improvements, especially when you have 3-4 people trying to use the store at the same time hahaha. I loved being able to easily switch from shield to throwing weapon, too.
