[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 21 points 3 months ago

Pockets heavy, but I got Eminem on my iPod already. Mom’s spaghetti.

We still exist and live like that over at https://lemmy.world/c/singlepurpose :)

I myself carry around a dedicated music player, notebook and planner, fountain pen, calculator, book, camera, paper sudoku

I can't wake up

[–] partial_accumen@lemmy.world 11 points 3 months ago (3 children)

There's no UMD disks in the picture for that PSP. So you've only got the one game thats in the unit.

[–] alk@lemmy.blahaj.zone 30 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Or it's modded and has every Nintendo game known to man installed.

[–] otacon239@lemmy.world 7 points 3 months ago

I used to backup my UMDs to my MemoryStick SD adapter. Got way better battery life and faster load times. Also could overclock with the custom FW.

[–] titanicx@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 months ago

There is a carry case there, so they could be in that. But you only need lumines anyways.Β

I would need to find exact sources for it, but I believe PSP was the most hacked/modded console in history, to the point where Sony themselves actually mentioned it being an issue and hurting their bottom line (and possibly part of why their efforts with the Vita were short-lived).
Either way, chances are it had games aplenty, videos, movies, mangas and whatever else you could fit on there. I know that's what I kept on mine, it was pretty much my "smartphone" back then.

[–] moonshadow@slrpnk.net 3 points 3 months ago

It was until the Wii! Way cooler scene though imo. "Smartphone before smartphones" is a great way to put it, I knew a guy who had his set up for navigation with an external gps antenna/car charger dock

[–] Rai@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 months ago

The Vita was so insanely underrated. Having a Vita makes it a hacked PSP, too. The only use for having a PSP after that is for better buttons for DJMP.

[–] criticon@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 months ago

The PSP memory (memory stick pro duo) wasn't as expensive as vita's because they were the same as the camera's and some other devices

[–] tenacious_mucus@sh.itjust.works 10 points 3 months ago

Dang, i miss my sidekick. That thing was awesome.

[–] HornedMeatBeast@lemmy.world 9 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I still have 2 of these.

Bought a new battery for my PSP after getting it back from my parents' place, I moved to another country and left it behind originally. I also rescued my original PlayStation.

Found my iPod Nano and it needs a new battery unfortunately.

[–] Cort@lemmy.world 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Good luck with the nano. The batteries are a pain to get out after they've swelled up.

[–] HornedMeatBeast@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

I had a look at the process and I don't think I will even attempt it.

I might be able to get it replaced at a store though, but it will be costly.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Look into jailbreaking the PSP if you're up for that and it's something you might enjoy. The process is very straightforward and works with every model. All you need is a sufficiently-sized micro SD, a memory card adapter, and a PC to download some files. Opens up lots of possibilities for emulation, for example

[–] HornedMeatBeast@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Already done ;)

I did it a long time ago, maybe a few years after I got it back when the battery needed to be a specific one in order to work.

I updated the custom firmware when I brought it with me last year and also got a much larger memory stick.

[–] v4ld1z@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 months ago

Awesome! Your comment made me want to buy another one used to give as a gift this Christmas :)

[–] Wigglesworth@retrolemmy.com 7 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Digital cameras never died, Motorola users usually carry one because their phone's camera sucks so much ass.

[–] PineRune@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Motorola user here. My camera works just fine. Very well, in fact. I'm not a professional photographer so I don't need a 5,000 megapixel camera.

[–] Magnum@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Clearly - professional photographers know the megapixel doesn't matter too much

[–] Wigglesworth@retrolemmy.com 1 points 3 months ago

It matters on a utility basis. 21-30+MP is the area of deminishing returns, even on full-frame.

I wouldn't shoot less than 16.

[–] vivalapivo@lemmy.today 7 points 3 months ago

My pockets were free because I was poor

When September ends

[–] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 6 points 3 months ago

Pockets were heavy, but the thing is: we had so many pockets. Now I'm lucky to have two. It was a time of plenty.

[–] thegr8goldfish@startrek.website 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Never had a Sidekick despite working for T-Mobile when they were popular. I got the Pocket PC, which had a similar layout.

All Treo for me, the sidekick was tempting but I was on VZW at the time

[–] bizzle@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I would kill for a sidekick again. Not android I only want java apps.

[–] dingleberrylover@lemmy.world 3 points 3 months ago

Maybe a Linux-based retro handheld? They come in all shapes and sizes and apart from playing games, you can also use them as MP3 players.

[–] RubberElectrons@lemmy.world 2 points 3 months ago

Nah I want graphene (sigh, sorry calyxos) and a real keyboard.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I'm still tempted to buy an mp3 player, but every time I remember I have an old working phone that would do the job perfectly

[–] MonkderVierte@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 months ago

You have to look closer between all the pseudpo-phones, to find a "mere" music player you can use blind.

[–] bitjunkie@lemmy.world 1 points 3 months ago

Well at least Amy Lee is still putting out bangers…

[–] Nomorereddit@lemmy.today 1 points 3 months ago

Shut up, in those times backstreet boys played their same 2 songs everywhere on earth. Elevators, car radios, Disney channel, porn hub, rotten.com, grocery stores.

We were enslaved..Just like the backstreet boys.
