I like meeting new kids because I'm Fat, I have a long beard, and my voice is very deep and raspy as sandpaper. LOTS to cover.

[–] WorldsDumbestMan@lemmy.today 1 points 10 hours ago

You mean, you don't?

Hi! I'm the world's dumbest man! I'm 30 years old, like coffee, and complaining, but not doing anything about society.

Are you bald?

Then they become friends for life. Honestly probably better than whatever adults are actually doing.

[–] dmention7@midwest.social 6 points 1 day ago

Adult here, can confirm this sounds refreshing. Just the facts, no BS editorializing or dick-waving to make up for your insecurities.

Hi, I'm Tetris but my friends call me Tee.

I like microcontrollers, 1970s progressive rock, and SciFi not written by Andy Weir. I am a snob, but I am friendly. Would you like some tea?

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 3 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Hey Tee! Nice to meet ya.

What's the beef with Andy Weir? I am a sci-fi fan, but I must admitI don't know anything beyond he wrote the Martian. I got lots of tea for Christmas, it smells so fragrant. What sort do you like the most?

I wonder if there's a comm for meeting and chatting like this, it's nice.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 1 points 2 days ago

Hi Deceptichum, greetings likewise!

He reminds me of a geography teaching tucking his kids into bed; good for film exposition and spoken dialog, but lacking in subtlety or prose. What kind of Sci-fi do you like?

As for teas, I'm an Oolong in the morning and Roobois in the evening. I do like Christmas teas though, and my ex loved to get an Tea advent calendar to try out new varieties. What's your favourite so far?

[–] Manticore@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Deceptichum has you covered on the sci-fi and tea, so I’ll ask about the prog. That sub is one of the few things I still miss from the old site.

I’m all about ELP, Utopia, Gentle Giant, and Rush. Somehow Yes and Genesis never really hit the spot for me.

[–] tetris11@feddit.uk 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I learned so much from that sub, it genuinely was amazing. I'm definitely in the Genesis and Yes camp, along with Harmonium, Camel, Alan Parsons, and however one classifies Blue Oyster's scifi stuff

[–] Manticore@lemmy.world 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

Interesting. I think I’ve listened to Camel once it twice before, but never got around to Harmonium or Alan Parsons. It’s been so long since I did any musical exploration though, I’m probably due to branch out a bit. I always go on such a deep dive when I find something I like that I’ll find myself knowing everything about a few bands while still having huge blind spots in the broader picture.

Harmonium

Grab some headphones, go for a small hike, and listen to this

You're welcome :-)

I'm toynbee, I have three whole cats, I like sci-fi including Andy Weir and I like fantasy as well, I'm very lonely. I cannot accurately comment on the state of your hairline.

Got any sci-fi / fantasy books you wanna recommend? Love Andy Weir and Fantasy.

Personally in terms of fantasy, first ones I think of are Mistborn. Love that trilogy. Been meaning to read the rest (or at least more of) The Cosmere.

Currently reading the second novel in The Expanse series.

Recently I've been intermittently bedridden and needed a lot of content to consume. I read much of the works of Edward Ashton, author of Mickey 7, inspiration for the movie Mickey 17 (and presumably also the username of a prolific lemmy user). I enjoyed that book and its sequel; additionally I very much enjoyed another book by the author, Mal Goes to War.

Because of some similar themes, I was recommended the book series Undying Mercenaries by B.V. Larson. I wouldn't say I recommend them; honestly, I think they're pretty poorly written, but the universe building is pretty solid and the character development surprised me in a good way. The humor is juvenile but fun. Also there are 24 of them so far, so they passed the time pretty well. All of the books in this paragraph are decidedly sci-fi.

Along those lines, I also enjoyed Expeditionary Force. It's about a common soldier who surprisingly finds a tool that shapes humanity in an expanding universe of aliens. I never actually finished that series (I was listening to it while driving back and forth from work, which was interrupted by COVID, then I forgot where I was in the series and never picked it back up.)

The Red Rising series is, or was, pretty great. It's about a lowly caste - starting on Mars - overthrowing society. Again, I only got three books in but never got past that. This wasn't a fault of the series - I had a kid and changed jobs around then and didn't have time to read as much.

I have previously read books by Mark Lawrence and enjoyed them a great deal, though they're not without flaws. As such, I picked up the more recent Library series, which was pretty good, though not my usual fare. However, I was able to share enjoyment of it with my wife, which isn't true of most of what either of us read. That series is very fantasy. In fact, everything I've read by that author is.

You mentioned Mistborn so you're familiar with Brandon Sanderson. I don't really like that story much myself - or didn't when I tried it a long time ago, anyway - but I did enjoy two series of his: The Reckoners, a story about superheroes; and the Cytoverse, a story about ... Well, a lot of things, but it starts with starfighters and gets more complicated. I would call both of those stories pretty sci-fi.

Bobiverse is in my top three book series. It's about a guy who dies but then manages to essentially become an AI and take advantage of that status to do a lot of big, good things.

The Last Kingdom is in my top five for sure. It's written by an actual qualified historian about a major transitionary period for England (with some artistic licenses taken regarding the history, but from what I understand every book is at least based on something that really happened). This one also has a Netflix series associated, though I don't know how good that is.

Finally, I have to assume you're familiar, but just in case: Douglas Addams and Terry Pratchett, both unfortunately passed, have plenty of excellent works even beyond their more well known stuff.

Hope some of the above provides you with entertainment! I wrote each section as I remembered the relevant series, so I apologize if my tone was a bit meandering.

I've not been on there but isn't that basically what dating apps look like? 🤔

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Isn't that more

"Hey"

"Hello"

"Are you there?

"Why are you ignoring me?"

"Okay whatever, you're fat anyway"

"Whore!"

*dick pic*

"Hello?"

[–] foofiepie@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Hi, I’m foofiepie, I like photography, bushcraft and early 20th century sci fi. I like cats too. Do you have a cat?

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Hi foofiepie, I'm Deceptichum. I have a black cat named Mia W. (Meow) and a dog named after the colour brown, because he is brown. What are your animals names?

[–] foofiepie@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Hi Deceptichum!

Mom told me not to give real names out on the internet but I can give you a picture of her.

I like your pets’ names.
