Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

A reminder that as the US continues to threaten countries around the world, fedposting is to be very much avoided (even with qualifiers like "in Minecraft") and comments containing it will be removed.

NATO infighting? You love to see it, folks.

The latest incident of America's satrapies becoming increasingly unhappy about their mandated kowtowing involves, of all places, Greenland. As I'm sure most people here are aware, Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark with a degree of geopolitical and economic importance - the former due to its proximity to Russia, and the latter due to the proven and potential reserves of minerals that could be mined there. It's also been an odd fascination of Trump during his reign, now culminating in outright demands.

Trump has called for negotiations with Denmark to purchase Greenland, justifying this by stating that it would be safer from Russia and China under America's protection. Apparently, Norway's decision to not give him the Nobel Peace Prize further inflamed him (not that the Norweigan government decides who receives the prizes). He has also said that countries that do not allow him to make the decision - which not only includes Denmark, but also other European countries - will suffer increased tariffs by June, and that he has not ruled out a military solution.

This threat has led to much internal bickering inside the West, with European leaders stating they will not give in to Trump's demands, and even sending small numbers of troops to Greenland. The most bizarre part of this whole affair is that the US already basically has total military access and control over Greenland anyway, and has since the 1950s, when they signed an agreement with Denmark. There are already several US military facilities on Greenland, and B-52 bombers have famously flown in the vicinity of the island (and crashed into it with nuclear bombs in tow, in fact). Therefore, this whole event - in line with his all-performance, little-results presidency so far - seems to be largely about the theatrics of forcing the Europeans to continue to submit to his whims. I would not be surprised if they ultimately do sign a very imbalanced deal, though - the current European leadership is bound too tightly to the US to put up even half-hearted resistance.

This is all simultaneously occurring alongside the Canadian Prime Minister's visit to China in which longstanding sore spots in their bilateral relationship are being addressed, with China reducing tariffs on Canadian canola oilseeds, and Canada reducing tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, as well as currency swaps between their central banks, among many other things. It seems no accident that Canada's reconsideration of their relationship with China is occurring as Trump has made remarks about turning Canada into the next US state, as well as the demand for the renegotiation of the USMCA.

The Zionist Entity's Genocide of Palestine

If you have evidence of Zionist crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Russia-Ukraine Conflict

Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Sources:

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.
Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.
Simplicius, who publishes on Substack. Like others, his political analysis should be soundly ignored, but his knowledge of weaponry and military strategy is generally quite good.

above: aerial photo of the march for australia in Naarm (melbourne) today (police estimate 2k)

above: aerial photo of the (police estimate 17k) of Indigenous groups and people who came out in solidarity for the annual Invasion Day rally - this photo doesn't do it justice, it extended down bourke st for 2 blocks

police estimations always down play these numbers, but they very politiely rounded up to the nearest 2,000 for the fascists

their turn out was less than the amount who turned out in support of Venezuela after the USA kidnapped Muduro

They ought to be lined up against a wall and released of their mortal coil. I understand Rodríguez has to walk a tight rope in order to maintain the Bolivarian Revolution, but freeing political opponents was one of Gaddafi’s worst mistakes. I hope at the very least they are closely monitored.

With regards to the ICE/DHS/CBP Minneapolis shooting/killing of Alex Pretti. Senior individuals involved in those agencies are moaning to Fox News, about the DHS and Trump administration posting and spreading blatant fake news about the incident, making up stuff about Pretti being a terrorist. So cracks are starting to show even among Trump's enforcers here.

Source

However that's not why this is interesting. The following, if you know anything about guns and the history of the SIG P320 (the gun Pretti had in his possession before being disarmed, and then shot and killed while being unarmed), is quite interesting if coming from ICE/DHS/CBP:

These sources all believe this is going to end up being what they call a “bad shoot”, a “shitty” situation that happened in seconds where agents likely heard “gun!”, then the disarmed firearm may have had an accidental discharge that spooked the agents, and they shot. The agents do not have the luxury of multiple slow motion angles - and had to make split second decisions.

The SIG P320 is the gun that's infamous for shooting by itself without the trigger being pulled, uncommanded/accidental/negligent discharge. So if the above is accurate, either ICE/DHS/CBP is going to use the tarnished reputation of the SIG P320 as an excuse for their agents killing Pretti, or the SIG P320 actually fired by itself while Pretti was being disarmed. If the SIG P320 actually did "fire by itself" during the disarmament, I don't even know what to say... Surely that would completely ruin whatever reputation SIG has left.

Drop site breakdown

Drop site did a good breakdown on the video, it looks like the murderer fires the first shot, you can see his arm recoil but the rest of his body doesn't. Its really hard to tell though, cause the video quality and all the chaos.

I don't think the narrative here is going to matter though, people are too pissed off and the video is too damning. By the time an autopsy comes out no one is gonna bother to check if the victim has 9 or 10 bullets in him

So either they're negligent idiots or they're liars. Obviously they're proven to be both, so I guess time will tell on this one. In the meantime, not sure this changes much? Still, interesting to hear all this leaking out

[–] makotech222@hexbear.net 21 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

I have the same p320 with the same trigger, the pull is like < 1lb its extremely sensitive and the gun has no safety on it. its meant for shooting professionally at a range

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 24 points 8 hours ago (1 children)

It's not even about the trigger being light and lacking an external safety, there's been cases where the P320 has fired on video without the trigger being pulled, especially when being holstered and unholstered.

One such video

The controversy reached such an extent that Sig Sauer created a website called p320truth.com where they attempt to debunk all of the claims about uncommanded discharges.

US military buildup against Iran update:

Poor weather and a cold front across large parts of the continental US have slowed down the military buildup, with multiple C-17 Globemaster III transport aircraft being unable to get to Fort Hood to pick up what is likely components of US Army air defence systems due to poor weather. Those that did manage to get to Fort Hood earlier have mostly ended up at Ali Al Salem Air Base, Kuwait, where the equipment they transported will likely be distributed across the Middle East by expeditionary forces. The movement of tactical fighter aircraft from the continental US to the Middle East has also been postponed (likely due to poor weather), with 4x KC-46 Pegasus mid air refueling aircraft with GOLD callsigns (instead of the usual REACH/RCH) pre positioned at Homestead Air Reserve Base, Florida, ready to drag tactical fighter aircraft across the Atlantic ocean with them, 12-16x tactical fighters (F-15/F-16/F-35/F-22, unknown what type yet) will likely make the trip soon, once the weather improves at their home bases.

On movements that did occur, an EA-37B Compass Call standoff electronic warfare aircraft flew from the continental USA to Ramstein Air Base, Germany. The EA-37B is the replacement for the EC-130H Compass Call and performs the same mission. The EC-130H has been previously used in US airstikes on Iran and Venezuela last year and this year. It's not known at this time if the EA-37B will continue further to the Middle East, or if an EC-130H will be sent instead at a later date. A C-5M Super Galaxy heavy strategic airlift transport aircraft made an appearance at Prince Sultan Air Base, Saudi Arabia. The C-5 originated from Dover Air Force Base in the USA, and is doing what appears to be round trips between Scotland and Saudi Arabia. Unlikely to be related to air defence deployments.

GOLD callsigns

Trump called his copy of Iron Dome he wants over Greenland the Golden Dome and given his obsession I suspect this is a public and very deliberate callsign showing it's Trump's operation.

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 16 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

Nah, GOLD has been a CORONET East callsign long before Trump's presidency. (CORONET missions involve ferrying tactical fighters over long distances and often across oceans, CORONET East is across the Atlantic). REACH/RCH callsigns are used by mid air refueling aircraft when just the mid air refueling aircraft is moving, not part of a CORONET mission. REACH is also used by airlift/transport aircraft.

Here's a website from 2015 discussing it

Trump does like GOLD a lot though so good guess.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 12 points 9 hours ago

I absolutely would've believed this was intentional without this info lol
