Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

tldr

We don't know what gas grenade it is or what's in it. But there is old data from grenades that look similar, and those old grenades are safer than normal tear gas grenades.

But we don't actually know what they are. They could be anything.

Thank you. It's missing everything someone would expect to be explained in the article. Very click-baity. I'm thinking MJ should not have published this one.

Whatever it is, every ice agent should be forced into a room filled with it.

[–] forrgott@lemmy.zip 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

And then leave em there. Like, just lock the door and walk away.

[–] PointlessProtestAgainstTheMachine@lemmy.org 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Right. No food. No water. Not my problem.

[–] diabetic_porcupine@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I don’t think food and water would be the issue at that point

I can't speak to their training processes, but I went through a room full of tear gas during my Navy CBRN training and it was not particularly pleasant but quite survivable. I'm not sure such mild conditions are quite what's needed in the case of ICE agents.

Is this too serious for you to treat it seriously (tbf everyone has different coping mechanisms) or why are you mocking the situation?

[–] TWeaK@lemmy.today 17 points 1 month ago (2 children)

It really should be said that this expert is talking out of his ass here. He hasn't positively identified the specific gas being used, just a similar product by the same manufacturer, and he definitely hasn't actually measured nor tested the gas at the scene. It's an educated guess, but still a guess.

[–] kbobabob@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What you described isn't "talking out of his ass". It's making a logical hypotheses based on the info provided. You even contradict yourself by calling it an educated guess.

[–] TWeaK@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I say that because, from a safety perspective, his advice should absolutely not be relied on when determining whether or not the gas currently being used is safe.

[–] ThunderQueen@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

From a safety perspective, anyone planning to be on the fontlines should have good ppe and expect the worst atp

[–] MojoMcJojo@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

Technically you're right, I guess.

[–] hector@lemmy.today 14 points 1 month ago

Whatever this is, tear gas, cs gas, is not harmless as is often thought. It causes permanent damage, and is actually a nerve agent, different than what we call nerve agents, but it hits pain receptors in nerves.

Likewise pepper spray would not cause permanent damage but I heard it is often mixed with pfas and other poisonous shit but idk on that source, the tear gas bit was in propublica in 2020 during the blm protests.

It's just a regular ol' smoke grenade like the military uses for signaling. At least so say some people on the ground in Minneapolis who recovered one of the canisters.

[–] AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

“The green dyed smoke suggests high toxicity to protesters,” he adds, “but the effect is more psychological.”

This isn't saying that it's not toxic or dangerous, it's just pointing out that once again they are adding in a layer of purely psychological terrorism, which should be of no surprise to anyone who knows how much these pathetic evil fuckers rely on kayfabe. The green dye is added for a dramatic flair.

They're dangerous, and you can't underestimate them, but don't forget they're hoping to put you in trauma by being as fucking overblown and dramatic as possible. Consider it a deliberate cutesy attempt to add insult to injury for the benefit of their own ego.

If you know how mentally ill narcissists operate, you should understand the thrill they get from constantly terrifying a captive audience.

They're not even the first dramatic little bitches to use green gas. They just ripped off the fucking Joker and Smylex because nothing they do is ever original.

Joker's Parade: Batman(1989)

The Minnesota tribune article calls out the manufacturer directly: https://www.startribune.com/border-patrol-greg-bovino-smoke-canister-chemical-spray-ice-protests-observers-minneapolis-dhs/601568184

Luhmann took video of one of the empty smoke canisters, which is labeled as “pocket tactical green smoke,” made by the company Defense Technology. The back states that it should be used only by “trained law enforcement, correctional or military personnel.”

Below that, it states that anyone using the canister “should be trained in deployment, decontamination and first aid procedures.”

Defense Technology (and their shareholders) should be having their names spread far and wide for selling weapons to terrorists murdering American men and women. Hit them and all their enablers in their fucking pockets.

Here is the company's contact information including phone number, fax, and address for domestic sales in Casper Wyoming. They should open bright and early Monday morning so give them a jangle at (307) 235-2136 and let them know if you're satisfied with their products.

It's proprietary Soylent Green flavoring.

They are seasoning.

[–] Bazell@lemmy.zip 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Interesting choice of a colour for the smoke grenades they have.

[–] dugmeup@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Just need to find spider man. If he can't, well innocent bystanders are just collateral damage.

If you can see it, it's easier to blow back with a leaf blower.
