My Mama Bear always wanted one little piece of meat, so she was sure that I still loved her. After that she was fine with her own food.

This is mybrelationship with my daughter's cat. That cat hates me, but we have a mutual understanding that I will let her smell anything in my hands if its food or not.

We had a cat that loved yellow food. I realize cats don't see colors the way we do which made it all the more confusing. Honeydew melon? Yeah. Cantaloupe? Nah. Water melon? You crazy? Yellow bell pepper? Go ahead. Red bell pepper? Fuck off. It loved corn. And potatoes. And once it went straight for the yellow M&M when they spilled on the floor. That cat had a severe deficiency of yellow.

That’s so weird.

I’ve always heard that cats are basically colourblind, but I used to have a cat that was terrified of the colour orange. He bit an orange extension cord as a baby, and would avoid anything orange after that. Not red, not yellow, only bright orange.

We had a bright orange blanket, and if you dropped him onto it, he’d spring away like it was a trampoline.

It's crazy how orange gave your cat PTSD. I think cats are dichromatic, they see blue and yellow. But orange is weird because of the red part of the color. I guess they still can differentiate?

Must be. He had no reaction to yellow or red.

No joke, I love letting my cat smell everything I make. She has never tried to eat it. I read somewhere that they are very curious about what you’re doing and the world around them, so I like to let her smell my bowl of food (unless the smell is particularly strong or pungent).

My cat did this for years with two exceptions (blueberries and peas, which must be stolen, played with, and lost under the couch). Then one day I had brisket. His eyes got huge and he immediately tried too steal it and eat it, so I guess after four years I finally passed his test for "this is food".

[–] cm0002@suppo.fi 48 points 2 days ago

He shouldn't have had to steal it, you should have been a good humon and served it to him proper!

This incident will be reported

My cat did that with Wendys bacon specifically. She would try and pull it out of our mouths. She loved it so much that we'd stop after vet visits to get her a side of bacon.

[–] FishFace@piefed.social 4 points 1 day ago

One of my cats is almost this obsessed with pears. She likes smelling people's mouths anyway, but goes nuts if you're eating a pear. She rubs her face all over pears, bites the stalks, licks them...

She liked other bacon, but Wendy's was the only one she'd get aggressive over.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

I really wonder why, if they have a different kind of bacon or something.

She knows those other fools freeze their meat and has standards

[–] Zorsith@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 day ago

Cat has good taste, brisket is good stuff!

https://seattleareafelinerescue.org/decoding-stink-face/

My guess is this cat is doing it because it's a real big smell.

[–] FiskFisk33@startrek.website 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Possible triggers

Sensory Overload: Cats have an exceptionally keen sense of smell. “Stink face” may be a reaction to an overwhelming scent that your cat finds intriguing, puzzling, or even offensive.

Taste Sensations: Certain tastes can trigger the response as well. Cats may exhibit this expression after encountering a new flavor, especially if it’s unusual or unpleasant.

Social Communication: In multi-pet households, “stink face” can be a social cue. Cats may use this expression to convey a message to other animals, signaling discomfort or a desire for personal space.

So all that text just to say cats do the stink face in the literal same contexts a human would ;p

[–] daggermoon@lemmy.world 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I want that cat. Even though i'm allergic. I still can't resist petting them.

Get a sphinx cat or other hairless breed.

[–] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sphinx cats are best walking sentient ball sacks.

The most adorable of sentient walking ball sacks!

You ruins it!

[–] bleistift2@sopuli.xyz 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I have a colleague just like that.

  • Whatcha eating?
  • Did you season it exactly the way I like so it’s unedible to you?
  • No.
  • Ew.

I do the complement to this: I hunt down my cat and make sure he gets a whiff because I enjoy the silly faces he makes.

My cat wants to smell my morning coffee every time. She smells the milk, and even though she should know there's disgusting burnt bean juice in it too she insists on checking it out anyway.

[–] muusemuuse@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

I have the sudden urge to offer my cat a lime.

[–] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 2 points 1 day ago

Mine wants to smell it and also eat it.

[–] someguy3@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Better than them eating it.

[–] deacon@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

Oh mine too except they don’t make the face and do very much want to eat it, every time, without fail.
