Sup nerds. I just joined this community or whatever you call them on Lemmy.

2026 is a shitshow. So I'm trying to make myself do stuff that is fulfilling and not draining, not be a recluse, and also use less corporate social media (and corporate goods and services in general). So anyway hello.

use less corporate social media

Good deal. I'm almost at the point where I could delete my reddit account because I hardly ever feel the urge to comment there. Not like deleting it does anything...

I went on a ski trip with a bunch of friends this past week and it was so much fun.

Now I'm home and my in-laws are visiting. We plan on driving to Pennsylvania tomorrow to visit more extended family over the weekend.

I got a 3D printer delivered yesterday, a Prusa Core One+. I started to assemble it today and I'm looking forward to being able to print things!

[โ€“] DaveWave94@wetshav.ing 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Congrats on the 3D printer! I find those things very exciting, but unfortunately I lack the time, space and tech knowledge to justify getting one. New gadgets can always be inspiring and spark some joy though. I was boring and just got a mini filter coffee machine for myself to finally get away from instant coffee powder ๐Ÿ˜…

This will be a new hobby for me which has been a long time coming. I've wanted a 3D printer for at least the past 10 years. I've used the one available at the library a few times but decided it was time to get my own.

Sounds like an excellent coffee upgrade!

New hobbies are great and I'm sure it'll nicely support your other hobbies. There are plans available for razor holders and I guess there should be similar plans for RC plane parts and accessories. Great investment ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

And I hope it'll be a way better way to make coffee. I also have a french press, but while that coffee tastes way better, it irritated my stomach. The filters should take care of that now. Only cleaned the machine today and gave it two test runs with just water as recommended in the manual.

Am I correct in thinking we're skipping February for BVWSC?

@porkbuttsntaters666@sub.wetshaving.social has been the only one managing the voting process, should we have a discussion about how to more fairly share that burden?

[โ€“] PorkButtsNTaters666@sub.wetshaving.social 5 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Well, I completely screwed up on this - I suggest we revert to a Tabac shave for February.

I will launch prep for March tomorrow. Burden-sharing in launching the prep in not really necessary - it's not much work, but I need a reminder sometimes.

One thing is also that you and walden have been winning an awful lot recently, so maybe some burdensharing on that side would be fair ๐Ÿคท

The natural suggestion is for folks to propose better soaps! ;)

~~In related news, there's a new feature coming to PieFed in an upcoming release. On Lemmy we have a local-only community to handle voting, but people from PieFed don't see those posts unless they log in to Lemmy (local-only means no federation). The new feature will be invite-only communities, meaning we could create the BVWSC voting community on PieFed and everyone will see those posts. Only people who are invited can join.~~

I've been informed that these communities won't federate, actually. So it's still just local-only, but with an added layer of needing an invite. So, nevermind!

Ah, that would be very cool if it worked how you thought it would.

Still not dead, but my new job has me drained of energy. I'm positive it's just an adjustment period though, as I am actually having fun sometimes too. It's definitely more challenging and demanding than my work at the nursing home used to be - the constant juggling between different tasks is quite hard atm, especially with my ADHD problems. My coping strategy/workaround is that I carry a small notebook in my scrubs and write almost everything down. Gets me weird looks from colleagues, but IDC. It also helps that my first paycheck included a welcome bonus and my jaw dropped when I realised I could finally make a good living from nursing. It was already comfortably more than I ever got at the nursing home without the bonus...

Unfortunately the high workload lead to me putting all my hobbies on the back burner. I was actually planning to get a shave done today, since I had two days off before working the weekend, but nope - I just couldn't do it. Maybe tomorrow after my early shift and some much needed grocery shopping, but this will leave my energy levels at 0%.

I got a cheap electric head shaver and a OneBlade, and while both get the job done I need to be honest: for wetshaving enthusiasts like us, it's simply not satisfying. The cheap chinese head shaver from eBay surprisingly does a way better job than the popular Philips trimmer though and thankfully gives me almost no irritation. Still, it's a "soulless" way of shaving. As in, shaving becomes a chore again. I now dropped the henriquatre/full goatee in favour of short designer stubble again, since I'd rather get a nice trimmer with different low guards than replacement heads for this Philips atrocity that makes my neck look like I got into a fight with a cat - and lost...

Nevertheless, as I said I am positive that I'll adjust to my new duties soon and feel less exhausted from everything. Hope you fine folks are all well, even though 2026 started off pretty cold and snowy (at least over here). โœŒ๐Ÿป

Glad to hear you're doing well, all things considered! Starting a new job is always a lot. At least you feel you're being compensated fairly.

[โ€“] DaveWave94@wetshav.ing 4 points 4 days ago

Thanks! I kinda underestimated how a completely new workflow and a month of early shifts would take a toll on me. But the salary is really fair and I start to get more confident at what I do. I hope to be more active here again soon!
