I used to be SO excited to get my new Highlights magazine in the mail each month! I loved the stickers I got with it, and I loved playing the fun games and reading the new stories and comics.

I used to also get their "Puzzle Buzz" magazines, which was their books full of fun different puzzles and games.

Fun fact: Highlights will be 80 this year.

Did you used to get or read the Highlights magazines? Or what magazine subscription did you have as a kid?

We might’ve had a subscription. I think I mostly read it at pediatric doctor’s and dentist’s offices.

[–] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Oh fuck yeah. Huge fan of the object finding stuff they did back in the day

The hidden Pictures games!!

I actually was just playing with those on the highlights website yesterday!

[–] gothic_lemons@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

There's a fucking website with the hidden picture games!?!??!!! I know what I'm doing for the next date night

[–] KuromiGirl04@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Yep! Go to "highlightskids.com" and click on the "games" button on the menu!

My mom was a "secretary" (read: she was a fucking office manager who ran that entire company while the owner had affairs and did absolutely jack shit). One of the many, many things she did was ordering all the magazines for their office and two other locations.

She got me highlights on the company dime and them sent to our house. Haha

We got a Highlights High Five (for preschool/kindergarten age) subscription for my oldest and she loves it. Every time a new magazine comes in we have to read it in full at least three times.

That Gallant fellow seemed like a smug prick but his friend Goofus always got up to fun stuff.

[–] turdburglar@piefed.social 7 points 5 days ago

gufus and gallant, yo

[–] xylogx@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

Loved these. Had them at my doctors office.

[–] tuckerm@feddit.online 6 points 5 days ago

Yes! I had Highlights and Ranger Rick. I vaguely remember some of the puzzles that were in Highlights, and also Goofus and Gallant.

Brilliant magazine. That, and National Geographic World for Kids.

[–] GraniteM@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

And Zillions: Consumer Reports for Kids! I read up on which ice cream bars were the best for your money, which action figures were most durable, and why you should lobby your parents to give you an allowance to help teach you financial responsibility (I tried; my mom didn't buy it).

Good documentary about the history of “Highlights”…

If you’re in the states, check to see if your local public library includes access to Hoopla — it’s available to stream there.

[–] KuromiGirl04@lemmy.world 0 points 5 days ago

Sadly I don't think my local library has Hoopla. Anymore at least.

I believe they used to have it at one point but then they changed to a new thing called Kanopy

This and nintendo power 🥲

Do these no longer exist for kids nowadays??

[–] KuromiGirl04@lemmy.world 4 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

Oh these do, they're about to celebrate 80 yrs.

They still make new Highlights magazines

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Ah what a relief. Fantastic magazine!! I can't believe I completely forgot about it the 20 years I was raising my children, should have subscribed to that magazine for them! Just barely missed it.

My sister and I actually had a great stroll down memory lane while trying to ensure we weren’t crazy and their TOP SECRET Adventures series. I remember these being in every waiting room kids would have to be in

[–] Scuzzm0nkey@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

I got Boy's Life and Air and Space since my old man was in the air force and I thought planes were pretty awesome.

Don't think I remember that, but for some reason I wanna say I remember some "Which Way USA?" magazine.

Edit:

Looked it up and it seems they were either 2 different versions of the same magazine or were the same thing. I didn't do much research outside of a quick search and looking at some images.

We were that family, I guess.

[–] KuromiGirl04@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

Oh my stars, I forgot about Which Way USA! I had a couple of those because there was sometimes a 2 for 1 deal with either my regular Highlights magazine or my Puzzle buzz magazine and Which Way USA would come with them.

Yeah, there's a bunch of different Highlights magazines for kids

[–] Doublenut@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 days ago

I do remember and I loved them. My child now has a subscription. Its very different these days but in many ways a lot better. They are made to be more reusable with activities and such and they have more specific age brackets for different content. Pretty great.

I just bought my 3 y/o niece a subscription. They have diversified their publications and now have a magazine for 3-5 year olds, 0-2 year olds, along with the OG highlights that I grew up with. I can't wait until she is a little older so I can get her zoo books.

[–] gigastasio@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 days ago

When I was a kid I thought the cover said “Fun with a porpoise.” And I was always dismayed that said porpoise was never in the damn magazine.

What did you do with the porpoise, Highlights Magazine!?!!?

[–] digger@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago

I had one as a kid. My mom got both kids a subscription for Christmas this last year.

[–] Davel23@fedia.io 2 points 5 days ago

I was more of a "Dynamite" kid.

Highlights was good, but I got most excited for Nickelodeon Magazine. There's still a book in my parents' collection that's got a prank cover on it, taken from that magazine. It's some sort of outdated technical manual, but at far as my parents know they own a real book called "James and the Giant Butt."

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 days ago

Damn, I don't remember this or any other ones people are talking about in the threads. I vaguely remember a magazine that was more science oriented that was called Hibou or something... Other than that, it was EGM2 and Nintendo Power.

[–] Lost_My_Mind@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Anyone roughly 40-45 remember the Dinosaurs magazine? It came with plastic dinosaur bones. And after so many issues you could build a T-rex skeliton. My mom stopped buying it, and I had a T-tex skull, and part of its spine/ribs.
