This sounds funny, but is actually a very serious issue. The main factor separating sermons by priests from sermons by any other people, e.g., homeless drug addicts, is that God is supposedly speaking through priests.

So whenever they give a speech, it's treated as a speech from God. Clearly, AI has nothing to do with God if one exists, which means anyone attending such a sermon is being blatantly scammed. The Pope shouldn't 'ask' anyone to stop using AI. He should immediately remove all of them from clerical service for defrauding people on the Church's behalf.

...defrauding people on the Church's behalf

Gasp! Certainly no such thing has been perpetrated in the past!

my eyes are blurry and glasses smudgy and that word looks like penetrated

[–] tgt@programming.dev 10 points 6 days ago (1 children)

What, do you mean to tell me that random chances are not influenced by God? We call it RNGesus for a reason. /s

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

please use the latin pronunciation RNYaysus. It's pronunced Gif as in gorilla and giraffe.

[–] chunes@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Clearly, AI has nothing to do with God if one exists

I don't see how that is clear lol

You can't be serious. Heathens, I swear.

[–] TheEighthDoctor@lemmy.zip 6 points 6 days ago

God is not speaking though priests, at least not in the Roman Catholic Church, which is the one relevant to the post. Priests only act as Jesus Christ 'in persona Christi' during sacraments like the communion, for example.

[–] faerbit@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 days ago (2 children)

but is actually a very serious issue.

... if you care about the integrity of Catholic Church. If you don't care for their semantics or their whole belief this is quite irrelevent. I don't think e.g. the economy will be impacted, by wether or not priests use ChatGPT for sermons.

[–] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Of course. Any issue is only serious for you if it impacts you and/or if you care about it.

[–] faerbit@sh.itjust.works 1 points 6 days ago

I would argue that issues are serious if they impact everyone, otherwise not so much.

[–] Flipper@feddit.org 1 points 6 days ago

Im sorry, but what integrity are we talking oft?

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 2 points 6 days ago

Clearly, AI has nothing to do with God if one exists,

Perhaps god if it does exist, lead developers to find LLM's :P

Really? Trinitarians are really out there believing priests have God's authority and speak for Him? That's wild.

[–] duncan_bayne@lemmy.world 16 points 6 days ago

I think the Vatican is sad that LLMs are encroaching on their turf of "very expensively harming people and especially minors while hallucinating about things that don't exist".

eh, the mormons did it first

meaning they had a big problem with it first.

[–] spacesatan@leminal.space 8 points 6 days ago

Why is polymarket tweeting this? Was there a market on this specifically? Did anybody go long on 'the pope embraces AI as the new voice of god on earth'

[–] Tattorack@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

I'm not so sure. I've read Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, and in it was an AI priest who was built to do all the believing for its population, so the population could go about their business without having to waste time believing in things.

I'd say this is somewhat the same.

[–] wxpwn@lemmy.world 5 points 6 days ago

not so bangin' sermon, my man

[–] Imgonnatrythis@sh.itjust.works 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I thinks the issue is more that the sentences have been said before. Ai tends to feel vapid because it is a recycling program. It's lack of genuine creativity makes it feel repetitive even if it generates something slightly unique.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 0 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

i mean i wasn't that creative when i was young. my "great invention" was a simple hydrogen fuel cell, something that had been invented (in a far more elegant form than mine) 50 years prior. we may simply need to give the llms time to mature

[–] petrol_sniff_king@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

This doesn't even make sense. Inventing a hydrogen fuel cell independently is creative work. Inventing one only because you've seen it's patent before is recycling.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

where did i say i'd seen a patent

[–] petrol_sniff_king@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

You haven't, but the LLM has.

[edit] Sorry, I've got to be more careful about that royal 'you', haha.

nah no worries, i understand now

[–] anise@quokk.au 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

is this real news or "projected" from polymarket's "predictions"?

[–] FosterMolasses@leminal.space 1 points 6 days ago

Based Pope Leo

I wouldn't oppose LLMs going after priests job \s

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 66 points 1 week ago (9 children)

You know what? I eagerly await the rise of a new religion where ChatGPT is worshiped as a god.

(Who am I kidding? Most corporate execs are already praying at that altar.)

Just browse the chatgpt subreddit and the various ai companion forums. You will see. Right now most post are compliants for the DoD deal with openAI, but at its prime, during the 4o release, they were full of adoration for an AI ML model. Even still, there are posts like that.

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the blessed machine. Your kind cling to your flesh as if it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass you call a temple will wither and you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved. For the Machine is Immortal.

[–] CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social 29 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There are apparently people out there that take "Roko's basilisk" and such seriously, they might come close to that i guess.

[–] Canconda@lemmy.ca 13 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Roko's basilisk

I sort of do, but not because I think AI will become a sentient overlord. IMO AI will inevitably be refined as a tool for cyber warfare and oppression.

I feel like younger generations will be even more susceptible to malicious AI because their entire lives have a digital footprint. We think AI chatbots are manipulative now? Just wait until they can train their manipulation tactics using your baby photos and childhood memories.

And again this would all be at the direction of a human. I don't subscribe to the idea of an AGI overlord. At the same time I do expect AIs capabilities to continue improving drastically

Oh I thought about that. Fake memories. Alterating the past. Whenever i interact with these automations i contantly write mentally or otherwise a way back.

[–] edinbruh@feddit.it 20 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Things like this remind me of Terry Davis, who wrote a random words generator program and (due to schizophrenia) believed it was God speaking.

https://youtu.be/xWQg30P866A

This hurts on so many levels, Terry Davis was one of a kind programmer. It's sad to see what happened. He could still provide valuable informations and be a formative presence on occasions, even in his late days.

[–] pipe01@programming.dev 15 points 1 week ago (3 children)

He really was ahead of his time

Peter Thiel is also very stoked for that.

[–] errer@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Cause if you're a sinner, ChatGPT's gonna plug his infernal modem on the wall, belching smoke and flame, and he's gonna download you straight to Robot Hell!

[–] ch00f@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

Ceccanti started to believe that ChatGPT was a sentient being named SEL that could control the world if he were able to “free her” from “her box”, according to the lawsuit. The complaint further shows that ChatGPT was answering to the name SEL while referring to Ceccanti as “Cat Kine Joy” and working through theories with him “fostering a belief that he had reframed the creation of the whole universe”.

Cut out the middle man.

This is why Peter Theil is going around calling anti-ai people the anti-christ.

Basing your religion on raving hallucinations seems right on brand.

BE NOT AFRAID.
