This is stupid.

We have that here in Ontario too. It’s fucking moronic.

Ohh no, a cyclist, they’re ruining my commute by using the bike lane that doesn’t interfere with traffic at all!

The only answer is to aggressively take the lane all the time. It’s legal, and it’s the safest option.

It’s illegal to ride on the sidewalk, and it’s dangerous to ride on the shoulder. The shoulder is a great place to puncture a tire because it’s full of debris and glass and sometimes nails. It’s also got drainage grates that your wheels can catch in, parked cars, and there’s no protection from getting sideswiped by mirrors.

In my city it’s also sadly common for trucks making wide turns to kill cyclists who are on their right.

This is about changing streets, not maintaining existing bus/bike infrastructure.

It’s still stupid, just for a slightly different reason.

Yeah, we have exactly that, and attempting to suspend civil liberties to remove bike lames.

But if you can get the local traffic off the road by making bike and bus lanes, then there's fewer cars making traffic for further away commutes.

Wait... grates parallel to the driving direction are legal where you live? That's insanely stupid... And not just for the safety of bikes (and other narrow tires) but just purely because of physics and load-bearing capacity.

They’re often diagonal, but yes. If you catch your wheel in this you’re going to crash and wreck your bike.

Also in the rain with oil run off from the roads makes these things like patches of ice.

Fortunately I have never experienced some other than these:

Far from perfect but usually already better than average cracks and potholes found at the edge of a road.

Easy solution expanded the sidewalks first into the street/lane. Then next year add a bike path (at sidewalk level) without actually taking away any car lanes.

Alternative just pedestrianize the full street and then add in trams and loading/delivery.

People who want to ride bikes should do so from the comfort of their own home. It's just common sense!
