Generational infighting among the working class only serves the wealthy and corporations who are who we should actually be angry at.

In a decade you'll see memes blaming your generation for not doing anything and can you actually point to anything you've done besides creating a meme blaming boomers?

[–] Dadifer@lemmy.world 49 points 5 days ago (4 children)

I would feel more responsibility if the boomers could release their deathgrip on the government.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 22 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Lucky you, in my country the boomers are still fighting over the government with the silent generation. The latter of which is barely still alive

Their primary demographic is millionaires, not boomers. You could change them all tomorrow for millennials millionaires and still have a shitty government.

Similar to the Russians’ desire for other countries’ citizens to have a negative opinion of all Americans, only about one-third of America is the issue. However, they want less politically informed nations to blame all Americans. Most of us are working multiple jobs to afford our living and healthcare costs, making it next to impossible to have any free time.

[–] rayyy@piefed.social 6 points 5 days ago

Boomer here. Excellent point. I was mostly a lone voice at work. Then again those I worked with never bothered to be the least bit informed. I also worked with much younger folks that were not any more informed. In fact, most all the people in our rural area are also young and grossly misinformed and they love it.

[–] NotSteve_@piefed.ca 14 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Okay, but so can a lot of boomers. Still expect to see memes about how you didn't do anything

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

That's fine, all I care about is being able to look my kids in the eye and tell them I tried, and what I did.

I will be agreeing with those memes.

[–] JillyB@beehaw.org 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Don't get tennis elbow patting yourself on the back. Your individual actions won't matter unless you can bring industry with you. The best way to do that is to help people gain class consciousness. The best way to do that is by not considering your individual actions as relevant.

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Weirdest leap of logic I've seen in a long time....

"If you can't change other people's minds for them, then your personal efforts are worthless"

I could give two shits what anyone else thinks about my efforts.

[–] NotSteve_@piefed.ca 2 points 5 days ago

It goes back to my original point though in that attacking other working class individuals based on birth year is just counterproductive infighting.

The fight needs to be brought to the rich and powerful who have had the opportunity to solve climate change and other global issus but have chosen instead to enrich themselves further by making it all worse

Of course, talk shit about any fascists you know as they all deserve their teeth kicked in but a boomer you see on the street could just as easily be a lifelong environmentalist hippie as they could be a fascist - just as anyone from any other generation could be (especially Zoomers for some unholy reason)

TL;DR is fuck billionaires and generalising is bad

[–] ZoopZeZoop@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I minimize plastics use, recycle anything that can be, reuse/renew whenever possible, minimize all use of products dangerous to the environment/ecosystems, educate myself on the issues and candidates and then vote in every election, volunteer for political campaigns, I educate my children about the environment (including what we do to minimize our impact and why it's a problem at all) and politics (including the importance of voting, how to research candidates and issues). Yes, there is more I could do, but I think I do a pretty good amount--far above the average. My kids won't blame me, even if the memes blame my generation.

I wouldn't go out of my way to make older generations feel bad because that isn't solving anything, but I would educate them so that maybe their votes will be better going forward.

[–] Tiresia@slrpnk.net 1 points 4 days ago

I hope my kids grow up to blame me for my mistakes, and I hope the same for yours. Thinking you've done enough by conscientious participation in capitalism is a mistake and I hope your children will grow to see that even if you don't.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I yell at people online who refuse to even vote regularly, that's something right?

It's not much, but yeah. I guess it is something.

[–] taygaloocat@leminal.space 1 points 4 days ago

At least I'll be able to say I never voted for conservatives or fascists

Or is it the large companies' and the capitalist system's fault for not focusing on general wellbeing, instead looking at profit for everything, even if that means pollution? Coupled with a big media oligarchy?

[–] Hond@piefed.social 31 points 5 days ago

Yup, bashing on arbitrary "generations" is stupid. The whole "okay, boomer" meme manifested after thousands of ridiculous articles about blaming the youth for buying less diamond rings or whatever. It just turned around the absurdity. That was the funny part. Just seriously blaming our elderly is stupid the same way.

[–] fahfahfahfah@lemmy.billiam.net 5 points 5 days ago (2 children)

And which generation voted for politicians that let the capitalist system run amok?

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 18 points 5 days ago

The corporate lobbiests. Unless you're seriously arguing that swapping the Presidents from their era until now would have actually made a significant difference.

You aren't seriously arguing that, right?

[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

All of them. They all did.

[–] fahfahfahfah@lemmy.billiam.net 3 points 5 days ago (2 children)
[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 6 points 4 days ago

Both of these parties are run by the kind of politicians you're talking about.

I don't think it's fair so put the blame entirely on just one person.

My grandparents and parents might also feel a little guilt from beyond.

[–] DmMacniel@feddit.org 10 points 5 days ago

I don’t think it’s fair so put the blame entirely on just one person.

But it would be so easy to put it on them, and then flush them out of the airlock!

Every generation has had people who believe in and work toward all sorts of things. Hippies who thought they could levitate the Pentagon were the same age (actually, that's an oversimplification because, surprise, social movements have always been more age-diverse than they are presented in our media and histories) and existed in the same context as Henry Kissinger who was picking out carpet bombing sites in Southeast Asia as if he were picking what to have for lunch.

For as long as there's been people, we've disagreed with one another and worked toward disparate goals. Find people working on things you care about and work with them. Anything else is a waste of your extremely limited time in this life. Allowing endemic power structures to refocus your anger toward broad groups of "others" and then further propagating that misplaced anger only serves to prolong the status quo and to make working together harder.

This is an excellent summary of supporting your beliefs meaningfully and not letting class warfare define yourl life. Saving this, well written 👏

I blame corps and billinaires.

[–] krisevol@lemmus.org 5 points 5 days ago (2 children)

80% of our vehicle co2 emissions comes from overseas cargo shipping. I blame America consumers.

50% is from overseas shipping ships, and the rest from local transportation.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 4 points 4 days ago (2 children)

US customers didn't decide on this system, it was corps and billionaires.

I'm sure you don't consume stuff

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 22 points 5 days ago

What they did was vote for the lesser of two evils presented on the ballot. Does that sound familiar? Go on, admit, it, that's exactly what you do now, too.

It's a class war. It always has been. Start blaming the real villains, and stop the infighting, which just plays into their hands.

How do people not see this?

[–] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 16 points 5 days ago

Where do I sign up for this “billionaire grandma” program?

[–] RedSnt@feddit.dk 12 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

Also, besides burning all sort of trash, holes in the ozone layer etc. it's always fun to dig a 1+ meter hole in the ground and find old trash from the pre-1980s.

[–] Klanky@sopuli.xyz 3 points 5 days ago

Our house was built in 1930 and sits directly across the street from what used to be the farmhouse that owned all the land. Our backyard slopes down to another road. Anytime we dig we find old trash. Our backyard must have been the dump of the farm.

[–] hOrni@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

Let's wait at least six months before reposting this meme again.

[–] OrteilGenou@lemmy.world 14 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Lol, in forty years when "generation phone brain" is being mocked for their free surrender of data to the overlord class I hope someone gives this comment a like

[–] TheBrideWoreCrimson@sopuli.xyz 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

They'll also say something like:
"You mean you already HAD home office, old man? For a few years? And then you just... let them take it away again? And internet has been around for decades at this point anyway? And still, you were totally on board with increasing pollution and global warming by absolutely pointlessly 'commuting' from home to something called an 'office,' every day? Oh, what's that, you actually hated doing that? That's cute. But then you could have gotten a different job, right? Did you at least flip over some cars and set them on fire, in protest? Nothing? Just pure, unabashed complacency? I despise you and will piss on your grave."

(I played this through in my mind many times. There is no good comeback.)

[–] OrteilGenou@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

I still work from home. Power to the people, I say. Starting with me!

[–] SethTaylor@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Grandma should've lobbied harder for green energy. Look what you've done, grandma! Look what you have single-handedly done. Why did you melt the ice-caps, grandma? Hmmm? Did you think it would be "ROLFCOPTER"? Is that it? Is that why you melted the ice caps? Cause you thought it'd be "ROLFCOPTER"?
