“If you want to murder someone and get away with it, run them over with a car”

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 11 points 6 days ago (1 children)

in a mercedes to be precise.

[–] dan69@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

No necessarily, it actually applies to most mid tier ranked vehicles

[–] bearboiblake@pawb.social 51 points 6 days ago (1 children)

takes notes

If the person they hit was a billionaire or a cop, that would change things, right? Or no?

Cardoso de Oliveira, an executive at Apple, and his family were waiting for a bus in San Francisco’s West Portal neighborhood before a trip to zoo when Lau ran them over at a reportedly high rate of speed

The victim was actually an Apple executive and their family.

Life is so funny. That is very sad.

[–] VonReposti@feddit.dk 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Det er da bedre end norsk ;)

[–] P1nkman@lemmy.world 1 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Og norsk er bedre end dansk.

Source: har boet i Danmark i 6 år, ejer hus og det hele. Det danske sprog er norsk med en talefejl 😜

[–] VonReposti@feddit.dk 2 points 6 days ago (1 children)

She is eighty. Doesn't excuse it but makes a good case for mandatory driving tests every 5 years after the age of 50.

I'd be down for every year, for every driver, with naturalistic covert observation. It's that serious of a problem (like, 6 x 9/11 per year). Failing that, German-style licensing

[–] prenatal_confusion@feddit.org 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I am from Germany, what aspect do you mean?

[–] themaninblack@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Mandatory driving school for everyone (except reciprocal agreements), first aid training, much more time- and cost-expensive path to obtain a licence, eye test by optometrist, high failure rate for exams (though this is possibly suspect)

I read that Germany formerly didn’t have expiry for licences but it seems you now do. Isn’t there also a requirement to carry first aid in the car? Not sure about that.

I also like the law that requires you to pull off the road during gridlock to allow emergency vehicles to pass and to force people to stop and give accident victims aid.

[–] prenatal_confusion@feddit.org 1 points 3 days ago

Yes first aid kit in the car and out must help people in distress.

Expiry is news to me, have to look that up. And we do have a lot of old people and also incompetent drivers on the roads. But cars are state religion so nobody wants to go anywhere near that.

If there is a jam you need to plan ahead to make room for emergency services. Although I thought that this the default? Who doesn't move out of the way when there is an ambulance behind them?! The difference here is maybe that there is a standardized way to make room so everyone can comply. Between the first lane and second lane from the center of the road you create a path by moving diagonal to the side respectively. If everybody does it right then there is plenty of room. But no, it is still an issue. Some people just don't pay attention to these things.

Can't you read? It says Mercedes. They were driving a Mercedes. You can't possibly expect them to lock up a person who drives a Mercedes. That's like arresting a BMV driver. Inconceivable!

I remember a similar story from ~40 years ago, also in California. A man took out a family of four riding their bikes at the side of the road in Napa Valley.

It looks as if her sentencing was based on her old age and evident remorse. But I still think she should have had a short stint in prison, around six months.

[–] P1k1e@lemmy.world 41 points 6 days ago

Oh yea, so remorseful she hid her assets to prevent the family from getting anything

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 6 points 6 days ago

i expect nothing less from a mercedes driver, they are either performing some insurance fraud, or things like this. bmw, tesla and porsche cayenne drivers

[–] Naich@piefed.world 1 points 6 days ago

Mrs. Mercedes.

[–] Heyla@quokk.au 1 points 6 days ago
