doubles his taxes

Bezos continues to pay $0 in taxes

Was going to say this, he's technically right because he pays so little in taxes to begin with. I am honestly more of a believer in a flat tax for the rich now than progressive tax structure. But they'd find some way to weasel out of it so there's only one solution to them.

[–] gumball4933@lemmy.world 9 points 8 hours ago

Bezos is right. 2 x 0 = 0

[–] RememberTheApollo_@lemmy.world 11 points 9 hours ago

You could take 90% of his wealth and he’d still have more than 99.999% of the rest of the country.

He didn’t earn that money. He’s just a squatter making money on everyone else’s work. Stfu you whiner, Bezos.

The guy with all the money says that other people getting some of the money wouldn't help them.

And in the US a huge number of people just nod along because our culture tells us that net worth = human worth = intelligence = trustworthiness.

There's no continuing the thought, like if the money won't help struggling teachers then why is it so important that it stay with the person who already has ten thousand times the amount of money that would make a teacher rich and set for life?

Have you heard the song 'If I were a rich man' from Fiddler on the roof? One of the lyrics was that if he was a rich man people would flock to him ask him questions that 'would cross a Rabbi's eyes' meaning they would be complicated. And he says that it would not matter if he was wrong or right since being rich alone is what gives you credibility.

"I promise you, it wouldn't work. Actually, it'd make everything worse. So just trust me and don't try it. It's for your own good. I know what I'm talking about. You know I'd never lie, right? So no matter what happens, don't try it. Okay?"

[–] uberdroog@lemmy.world 4 points 8 hours ago

Let's try it and see, you may have conflicting goals

[–] magnue@lemmy.world 9 points 10 hours ago

You could kill Epstein and it's not gonna make a difference I promise

I have a great idea, we'll take all his billions, and set them on fire. No tax! And all of a sudden, inflation goes the other way for a day

Edit: spelling

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 4 points 6 hours ago

this is one of my things. you get these arguments about how well the government may spend the money but even if great wealth was taxed and burnt like you say it would have massive good effects on the economy. Its wealth disparity that is the problem.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 6 hours ago

taxes for lower salary workers is to high becuase we do not collect enough on wealth. At this point to much wealth does not come from work but if we taxed all income regardless of source then it should be 0% until about 100k and then 5% until 200k and 10% until 400k and 15% until 700k and 20% until 1 mil and 25% until 2mil and 30% until 10mil and 35% until 20mil and 40% until 40 mil and 45% until 100mil and 50% for everything over that. Its so rediculous what we don't tax at all and when we do tax the highest has been hovering around 30% since we started having growing debt again. Then to boot the highest rate stars in the very lowest end of the six figures and never goes up more. its crazy.

[–] mavu@discuss.tchncs.de 8 points 12 hours ago

I'd be open to try it though, for science..

[–] nosuchanon@lemmy.world 8 points 14 hours ago

Education is paid for by property taxes. So increasing income tax revenue will not help teacher salaries unless the funding mechanism is changed.

Specifically, new taxes on businesses and billionaires need to be specifically earmarked for education, otherwise that money just goes to the pentagons bloated budget. Basically from one pocket to the other. Billionaires don’t want to pay for massive wars, they want to profit from arms sales and the military industrial complex.

[–] OwOarchist@pawb.social 68 points 22 hours ago

Technically true.

2 x $0 = $0

[–] Frenchgeek@lemmy.ml 5 points 13 hours ago

"Okay. Will do."

[–] disorderly@lemmy.world 47 points 22 hours ago (3 children)

Sounds like we should nationalize Amazon. That's what he's saying, right?

[–] Blue_Morpho@lemmy.world 1 points 11 hours ago

It should be sold to the public as free market competition.

"We are taking over Amazon because government is inefficient and wasteful. This will allow American small business ingenuity to crush the government Amazon and replace it with a free market alternative."

[–] Shindo66@lemmy.world 13 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

We really could just do that. He and others would fight like hell, but why couldn't it be done? It needs to be done.

[–] ChonkyOwlbear@lemmy.world 10 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Supposedly most of their profits come from AWS, so they wouldn't even stop making money if the marketplace was nationalized.

[–] yakko@feddit.uk 9 points 15 hours ago

Honestly a nationalised AWS would be a way bigger boon to the economy, and he could go back to cornering the market on diapers or whatever fuck him

[–] pinball_wizard@lemmy.zip 7 points 21 hours ago

That's what i heard.

[–] Rivalarrival@lemmy.today 77 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Bezos is right. Double of nothing is... nothing.

[–] HumanOnEarth@lemmy.ca 25 points 22 hours ago

I'm pretty sure that he said that with that very thought in mind. Like a thinly veiled fuck you to the non-Epstein class.

[–] Mulligrubs@lemmy.world 22 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

"I promise you" is billionaire speak for "fuck you and fuck your family"

[–] BillyTheKid2@lemmy.ca 8 points 18 hours ago

He's right though. Double of nothing is...

Nothing

[–] CobblerScholar@lemmy.world 46 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Double? These assholes really don't know how close they are to being lynched in their own mansions

[–] iThinkDifferentThanU@lemmy.world 9 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Do it... Do it... Do it... Here's some ~~rope~~ something to use to 'reward' them for 'their' hard work & for your travels 🥇(closest I could find in emojis

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 7 points 14 hours ago

American government/police couldn't even stop the MAGA idiots from storming the damn Capitol Building. I doubt any hired goons would seriously be willing to put themselves between billionaires and a pissed off mob.

[–] Ephera@lemmy.ml 22 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

Time to post a classic: https://hmijail.github.io/1-pixel-wealth/

It's a few years old, so probably need to double these numbers. At least, Wikipedia says that Bezos' net worth is now $284 billion.

[–] pelespirit@sh.itjust.works 11 points 22 hours ago

And if he's like trump, pays about $700/year in taxes.

[–] inb4_FoundTheVegan@lemmy.world 12 points 21 hours ago

Said without irony as he sits in front of his personal vanity rocket. How many teachers could we pay a decent wage with that thing Jeff? What would we lose? Sending Katy Perry and her flower to space?

[–] shweddy@lemmy.world 7 points 21 hours ago

Why dont we just take it all then it'll get put to use

[–] halfapage@lemmy.world 8 points 23 hours ago

oh shit he promised

[–] Auli@lemmy.ca 6 points 23 hours ago

I mean he is probably technically correct. But let's tax them a lot not double of the pittance they pay.

[–] unmagical@lemmy.ml 5 points 23 hours ago

Well let's do it and find out!

[–] FreudianCafe@lemmy.ml 2 points 23 hours ago

Pinata economics this guy already
