Defense secretary’s latest interposition resulted in all-male, overwhelmingly white picks for promotion to admiralty

The US defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, stripped nine navy officers including women and Black service members from a promotion list last month, according to a person familiar with the matter, resulting in an all-male, overwhelmingly white slate of 22 advancing as nominees to become one-star admirals.

Hegseth’s unusual intervention violated promotion rules designed to be merit-based and apolitical, the New York Times said on Tuesday, and extended the Trump administration’s push to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in the military.

The original promotion list included three women and two Black officers in addition to the two who remained, the newspaper said.

“The sooner we have the right people, the sooner we can advance the right policies.”

Hegseth is not shy about his goals. The right people are white male MAGA, and the right policies are Trump's agenda. This is blatant racism and i will celebrate the day he is in jail or dead.

[–] jj4211@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I assume all instances of the word "right" should be "white"

[–] optimisticturtle@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Well he doesn't wash his hands so inshallah that will be sooner rather than later.

So you admit white men are disadvantaged and need help to reach higher rank, yes?

Smells like DEI

Wow imagine you decide to die and/or murder for a racist, patriarchical, genocidal empire... And then this happens! Bummer. \s

Literally doing DEI for white men.

If you're wondering why the navy can't figure out how to serve a hot meal on a boat anymore, this is why.

A large number of women officers were relegated to the logistics divisions. Because promotions were heavily favored towards combat veterans, and women were regularly prevented from participating in combat roles, logistics and back-office administration became the de facto "women's branches". Famously, the first woman 4-star general came up through Army Logistics. You'll find women officers all through inventory, engineering, comms, and medical roles.

When Hegseth starts purging women from these officers' corps, what he is effectively doing is Male-centric DEI in woman-dominated fields. And the end result is a much lower quality of officer with lackluster experience and more skills at kissing ass than doing the fucking job.

FAFO I guess.

Honestly IDGAF. So sick of boys hanging out on boats threatening the other side of the planet.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Listen, is it GOOD that navy officers would rather light their own ship on fire than spend another week in the Persian Gulf? Absolutely.

But, broadly speaking, is this how you'd like a Navy to operate? Seems like no.

you're wondering why the navy can't figure out how to serve a hot meal on a boat anymore, this is why.

I mean part of the reason....... The navy is just constantly shooting themselves in the foot constantly. The biggest being with their obsession with promoting commanders based on things like opstempo and deployment to dwell ratios.

Even when the US isn't in a war opstempo of the US Navy is so demanding that no one wants to join the navy anymore, and the fleets are falling apart from lack of maintenance or ramming into each other from sailors being overworked and undertrained.

And thats all without bringing up the history of graft in the Navy. I mean, Lord knows how many people getting promoted now we're around when Fat Leonard was throwing prostitutes and sacks of money at any officer sailing in the south Pacific.

This is likely to cause a large exodus that they just cannot refill with MAGAts. They're brain draining the military itself now while planning to use it more. Talk about stupid is as stupid does.

Right-wingers: they were only on the list because they're women/minorities!

No, that's the reason they were taken off the list.

[–] SabinStargem@lemmy.today 39 points 3 days ago (1 children)

My opinion remains unchanged: The Regime is throwing away pearls, and raising rot-ridden swine in their place. If a civil war comes, Hegseth and company will be ended by the people they cast aside.

Do they really want meritocracy or do they just want white cis christian loyalists?

[–] mic_check_one_two@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

DEI for me, not for thee. “Removing DEI” is just code for “shifting DEI to white cishet Christian men”.

They’ll call it a meritocracy to make themselves feel better. But it’s just DEI aimed at white men.

[–] ThunderQueen@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago (3 children)

Oh they want the latter. But they want to call it meritocracy so they feel better about it

Yeah because the fascists want an army comprised only of soldiers and sailors who agree with fascists.

And they wonder why people keep shooting at Republican politicians?

[–] zane@infosec.pub 2 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Better to be a wheel on their hearse than a cog in their machine.

[–] randompasta@lemmy.today 47 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Sounds like he only wants to be surrounded by men. Hmmm

[–] unknown@piefed.social 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

So how long do you think it will be before women, black people and other minorities, start getting excluded from promotion by government order from all other work places?

Ugh, and then my stupid country is going to copy you guys. Man I hope these tumours fucking kill me before that happens but who am I kidding, it'll probably be heat stroke from the el nino.

[–] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 2 days ago

So how long do you think it will be before women, black people and other minorities, start getting excluded from promotion by government order from all other work places?

How long? This is the entire history of the USA.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 24 points 3 days ago (5 children)

He also removed 4 white men from the list. I'd love to know what his reasons for that. Most likely not idealogically pure.

[–] AlecSadler@lemmy.dbzer0.com 27 points 3 days ago

Probably had negative Trump social media posts or some shit

Every navy personel who accepts a promotion from that guy is a traitor. and should be known as DUI hires and shamed through their entire career.

[–] Sylvartas@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 2 days ago
