The no1 reason to self-build is to save money. Obviously, this thing isn't going to appeal to that crowd. For a pre-built, this price isn't crazy. And the performance is fine for 1080p/1440p gaming.

So if you're the kind of person who knows the GPU nomenclature by heart, you probably won't buy this, but I still expect the thing to sell-out by virtue of being Valve.

I'm rooting for Valve's success because that means wider Linux adoption.

I cant figure out the nomenclature and was considering buying. I wanted to build but it is insane prices.

Not a supprise. Also it's just a pc. You aren't lock in their ecosystem. You don't have to use steamos. I like it a lot.

Anyone surprised by this, hasn’t payed attention to any tech news in the past year.

Is cool and good. Valve isn't fucking you and they aren't giving you a handout. Prices of computer parts are bad across the board and likely only going to get worse.

I really don't get why people are hating on it so much. Maybe it's reality sinking in, that all the whining of sjws really does matter? Is this the MUH GAS PRICES argument but for gamers? Fuck AI. Fuck Nazis.

so the 2TB version with controller will be about CA$2000+tx so CA$2300, just wow, no one will buy this in Canada.

I spent $2000 on my laptop (for a 4k touchscreen) in 2019, and it doesn't even play games.

I agree that 2k+ is far too much money for what it is, but if you think it won’t be completely sold out instantly in Canada…

I like that the more expensive options just give you more storage and bundled in stuff, so you can just pick the cheapest option and upgrade yourself later on.

A bare bones version without RAM and storage would've been interesting price-wise for people who happen to have parts lying around IMO.

yes but if you can DIY then that beats the purpose of console like PC which you can just plug in… at that point only the form factor may appeal to you but at the same time you’re unlikely to DIY with this kind of form factor for less

Fair, but if you want a Steam Machine than it would be a nice way of maybe saving a couple of hundred dollars initially.

Without a controller. With 512GB of storage. Older hardware that performs worse than a PS5 Pro.

[–] ramble81@lemmy.zip 5 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Can you use your PS5 as a general OS if you want? Do you have as large of a library as you do on steam?

[–] harrys_balzac@lemmy.dbzer0.com -3 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Actually, you can. Someone figured out how to do it.

Fact is, there are better used gaming rigs and new mini-PCs for less money.

This is just a way to fleece Gabe's fanbois.

Actually, you can. Someone figured out how to do it.

It is only possible on a very limited set of devices with old firmware. It isn't exactly comparable.

With enough modding, you can technically turn your Civic into a pickup truck, that doesn’t mean a Tacoma is for suckers.
