I know from credible friends that the gay scene in Egypt, especially among the elites, is underground but thriving, however much the idiot dictator Sisi might want to deny it.

I suspect the same is true in Iran, though the mullahs have been more relentless and efficient in their oppression. That doesn't make Sisi better, just more incompetent.

"In a statement on Wednesday to The Athletic, FIFA said it considers this World Cup to be an “inclusive event” "

Meanwhile Iran's team has to travel back and forth to Tijuana every night to sleep because they're not allowed to stay in the US

They may have given him a fake award, but that's not enough to tell the US what to do. The federal government is responsible for the Iranians.

Wow FIFA has managed to be slightly less shitty than two oppressive regimes.

The match was in Seattle. FIFA knew shit would go down if they told Seattleites to NOT fly rainbow flags. Portlanders would have driven (well, more likely rode their impractically designed bikes) up to Seattle to help protest.

A different possibility is that this action of FIFA is just rainbow washing.

Definitely a case of moneygay.

These are the people who gave Trump a "Peace Prize", so this is a lot more likely to be a cheap image management PR stunt that's acceptable for the corrupt crooks in FIFA because it doesn't impact their personal upside maximization.

The imperium of man has strange beginnings.

These are indeed very strange times.

Iran and Egypt can go suck a dick.

[–] Buffalox@lemmy.world 33 points 1 day ago (1 children)

That's basically all there is to it.
Fuck their bigotry and everybody else's too.

Intolerance is the only important thing to be intolerant of.

[–] Pappabosley@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

But if you intolerate an intolerant, the number of intolerants in the world remains the same - mostly because they're stupid asshats and won't change their ways

And then kill themselves in retaliation for it. Yes.

You want to play on the world stage you get to play with all the rules, even the ones you don't like.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Isn't this old news? The match is already over.

Yeah I'm questioning why OP posted it today.

It's perfect ragebait. Gays vs Muslims. I'm shocked the russian trolls didn't capitalize on it way harder.

I like how this FIFA quote can be taken one of two ways:

Fans of all sexual orientations and gender identities are welcome at matches and events.

If they don’t like it, they can go home. 🤷‍♀️
