Welcome to the News community!

Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

fuck fireworks so hard. They scare wildlife, veterans, dogs/cats.

Special needs people too. I feel like since we have drones now we don't need to sell explosives to people or organize them for shows.

Who the hell actually gives a fuck about the 4th of July? For most ppl i know it's either just time and a half, another day off, or a short workday. No more no less

[–] Malyca@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 hour ago

Kind of hard to have pride in this place

[–] frongt@lemmy.zip 28 points 1 day ago (2 children)

A lot of people enjoy an excuse for grilling, drinking, and exploding

[–] Cosmonauticus@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Then you dont like the 4th of July. You just like a day off during the summer

That's what my buddies are doing. Sadly I am closer I'm on the other side of the country.

Well, you have a lot of worthwhile targets to blow up right now. Fireworks can be pointed to other targets besides the sky.

Choose wisely.

Unfortunately, the explosives in fireworks are generally ill-suited to being used for alternative purposes, for one reason or another. From what I understand they're selected to look visually stunning (and have non-explosive additives for colors and effects), not for their destructive power (not that I'd suggest destroying anything...)

Fortunately, the information on what you can use that is suitable and how to make it from easy to source ingredients is readily available on the internet. Remember, if you choose to play with things that go boom, plastic containers and safety goggles. shards of plastic are not exactly fun to be hit with (and are harder than your eyes), but metal shrapnel or shards of glass are much less so when things go wrong.

Happy blasting.

Yes but you should still try. You never know what sequence of events may occur.

What, people don't want to celebrate the fact that the local white genocidal bourgeoisie revolted against the international white genocidal bourgeoisie?

[–] dogdeanafternoon@lemmy.ca 1 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

What percent of people celebrating do you think consider this for a single second? I’d wager that to most, it’s simply an excuse to have some drinks and some fun. As with most holidays.

Why do so many people feel the need to shit on absolutely everything these days?

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

I have no problem with people celebrating the holiday. I'll be going to a small party with friends. That does not change that this is ostensibly what Independence Day is about.

[–] dogdeanafternoon@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah I get it. But I think most holidays have a large separation from the actual origins.

I’m atheist and will happily celebrate Christmas and Easter.

[–] rockSlayer@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 5 hours ago

I'm the same way. I understand what you mean about being critical towards harmless things people enjoy, because usually it includes shitting on the people enjoying themselves. I try to maintain a degree of separation between that thing and the people that enjoy it

[–] switcheroo@lemmy.world 16 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I hoping that Oregon bans fireworks this year. It's going to spark a wildfire. Besides there ain't shit to be celebrating right now.

[–] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 4 points 6 hours ago

it doesnt matter, even when illegal fireworks are stupid easy to get and i've never once seen police give a single fat fuck about doing anything about it.

[–] mrmisses@lemmy.world 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

How can anyplace light off fireworks when the whole damn planet is a dried up tinderbox ready to go up in flames?

[–] PwnTra1n@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

When has the USA ever cared about the world going up in flames?

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 2 points 1 day ago

Because it's not like that everywhere
