You know, while there are places you don't want to get lost in if you're white, they aren't as common as the racists make it out to be. Now, I've worked in a couple of those neighborhoods, but even then once the folks literally coming out of bushes knew I was there to provide care to someone, that was the end of it.

Being real, my cracker ass grew up in a black neighborhood. You know how many times I got jumped by black folks? Zero. Wanna guess how many times I did by white folks? Well, only three, twice by the same assholes, but that's still telling, aint it?

My personal experience? Only time you'll run into trouble for being a cracker is if its a heavy drug area and you ain't buying. But those folks will be just as harsh to anyone, so I dunno if that counts or not.

Most violence is intraracial.

[–] southsamurai@sh.itjust.works 21 points 1 week ago

Very much so, statistically

[–] EldenLord@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

All human on human violence is intraracial. That is because human genetic variation does not support the division into different races.

[–] Zarobi@aussie.zone 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Are you confusing "race" and "species"?

Wikipedia:

Race is a categorization of humans based on shared physical or social qualities into groups generally viewed as distinct within a given society.

[–] figmentEpithelium@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

They're making a point about how race is a human construct created to separate humans for the purpose of power. The idea of race didn't exist until the 1750's or so when Linneaus categorized people based on geographic location and racist stereotypes.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Right, go tell that to Herodotus when he was talking about various other races of peoples and how barbaric they were compared to the Greeks.

The feeling you guy might get in "hoods" is the same feeling I, as a European get all over the US. I mean completely unrelated to race, just because many of you have guns and there's much more violence and insanity in general.

That being said. Nobody tried to rob me and most people were very friendly. There where a few scammers though, I witnessed some disturbing stuff on the metro and I also witnessed a woman attacking a guy in a car which resulted in having her arm being stuck in the window and being dragged a few meters by the car.

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 34 points 1 week ago (2 children)

You had more action on your vacation than I have living here. Granted, I don't know where you went.

[–] gandalf_der_12te@feddit.org 10 points 1 week ago

you always experience more when you're traveling than when you're standing still

[–] Mantzy81@aussie.zone 5 points 1 week ago

Dixon, MO is a wild place.

[–] BananaIsABerry@lemmy.zip 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I think this is just normal. I felt the same way traveling in Europe. I think it's just the combination of being in an unfamiliar place and standing out as a traveler. A lot of scammers target travelers intentionally.

[–] LH0ezVT@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yeah, scammers always go for the easy targets. Locals will know the scams, are more likely to call the cops on them or have friends to back them up. Foreigners in "holiday mode" are much easier. Same as online scammers who are targetting idiots who still believe in Nigerian princes, smart people with their guard up are not worth the time.

Every third article in the UK is about "Knife Crime!!!" The French and German news networks make it sound like Paris and Berlin are active war zones. FFS, even the Swedes are insisting half the country is living out the plot of Taken.

Like, I'm sure the US is marginally less safe than Europe. But I suspect that has more to do with Europe just being on-average five years older than the US. By and large, both continents are extremely safe. Violence - particularly street violence - is extraordinarily rare. And the areas where it does crop up tend to be between people who know each other and having some kind of deep interpersonal dysfunction (abusive spouses / parents, school kids fighting one another over some accumulated grudge, sports hooligans brawling with their rivals).

What we have, in practice, is a handful of highly glamorized violent events (school shootings, most notably) that get international news coverage. FFS, we spend more time covering shootings in the US than we do covering our active military campaigns abroad.

[–] LH0ezVT@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

The US has five(!) times the murders per capita than France, Germany or the UK.

Sure, a lot of that is probably gang violence, or isolated big events like school shootings.

But just let that fact sink in. Per capita, there are five times as many murders in the US than those "rough" countries the MAGA crows warns of. It's not marginally less safe, it is a whole different league. The US is in between South American or African borderline third-world countries [1] in terms of murders per citizen.

[1]: Granted, murders are probably more often reported and counted in the US than in Angola or Kenia. But still, that we even have to have this argument...

I experienced the opposite feeling, spent my high school summers in London and always felt like laughing when people would warn us off rough neighborhoods that were safer than the safe neighborhoods where I was from.

It has gotten much less violent here since then.

1980s to 2000

Believe it or not this still left us rougher than the US in general or even Florida in general. But look, since 2000

Gay: OP is taken for a ride by a group of guys

[–] Mac@mander.xyz 18 points 1 week ago

Ah fuck. That's so much better. lol

[–] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 46 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I mean that’s not a bad take away at least in sketch areas, the people living there generally don’t want trouble

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 14 points 1 week ago

Yep. And confused white boy who just straight up admits he is lost?

He very probably is just lost, and thus isn't looking to start anything.

Mutually beneficial solution to all involved is just... help him get home.

Win win.

[–] absentbird@lemmy.world 39 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I feel like race is pretty irrelevant to this story. Boy gets lost, locals help him find his way. The fact he was white and they were black is only relevant because we're expected to relate to the boy's fear of black people.

[–] TubularTittyFrog@lemmy.world 21 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

It's relevant if we assume it's america, because the white suburban middle-class american assumption is that all poor black people will murder and kill you and have no human decency. When of course, the truth is most folks in these places are decent and the crime is minority of the residents who are in gangs and other organized activities.

And trust me, tons of these people exist. I meet live in a city full of folks who claim to be liberal progressives but are utterly terrified to be in the same restaurant as anyone black. The racism is really really deep here, esp among those who claim they aren't racist because they watched Get Out and read White Fragility, so they can't possibly be racist!

But people are dumb monkeys and fear is one of our most powerful/driving emotions, to the point it's the an amazing tactic for fueling brain-rot political takes and policies based in 'black people are all bad people' nonsense. And also, more lately, latino immigrants from south america whose skin color has any significant melanin.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Even if they are criminals, they don't want cops on their turf. The best neighbors I've ran into were deep in the ghetto on a street with 3 sell houses.

[–] cmbabul@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 week ago

You and I know that but middle class white americans with little to no experience with black people are the more agoraphobic people on the planet

[–] Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

While I agree. It can be a little rougher in the south. I don't judge, but if I'm going to get some weed or M, and my buddy is with me, whom is a 40 yr old black guy. He'll be the first to say "lock the doors and keep the windows up."

Nothing on the folks in the ghetto, but some of em are desperate and will see a white person as an easy target.

But I'm also the type of guy to treat a rough black neighborhood the same as a rough white neighborhood.

Hell, I'm more scared of the white ghettos with all the meth. White methheads will stab ya in the face. Black ghettos are just folks trying to get by.

[–] village604@adultswim.fan 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This was in Louisiana. It was bad enough that my friend who lived there was surrounded by cops going home multiple times because "the only reason a white person would be there is to buy drugs."

[–] Salamanderwizard@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Yea, it definitely a thing I watch for when going into them areas. If I see a cop on one block, I'll go around 2 blocks so they don't see us riding back through.

Which makes me feel bad cause ya it is one of the reasons I am over there, but that can't be helped if the folks I break bread with are black.

And it's not like I see a black person and go "on that's a plug." It just I end up having black plugs cause all my white plugs rip me off and act like they're my buddies. I've never been ripped off by a black plug if I'm tbh.

It's a fucked world. Everybody wants to get the drop on everyone.

[–] Kenny2999@lemmy.world 22 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Racial profiling really is the lowest iq shit possible; equal to walking thru a nursery with a color chart and a labelmaker. What kind of an idiot do you have to be to ignore everything you yourself have ever experienced, received and taken for granted and presume the same facts of life don't apply to everyone. No one is born bad. Even trump was a human first. Apologies for rant.

[–] I_Has_A_Hat@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Racial profiling is bad. Profiling based on where you are is not necessarily bad. If I were to find myself in a bad part of town and a group of guys came up to me, it wouldn't matter if they were black, Hispanic, white, or Asian; I'm going to be nervous. Meth and other hard drugs know no race.

[–] Eyekaytee@aussie.zone 5 points 1 week ago

This is easier to say in a comment than in real life

[–] LH0ezVT@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

The unfortunate thing is, it sort of works. If you were able to stop and search 100 people as a cop, you would have more success stopping "stereotypical gangsters" than random people. And yes, many of those stereotypes are based on race and social status.

It creates many other issues, from discrimination to trust in institutions to pushing people into crime, but the sad thing is, the basic concept kind of works.

[–] EmilieEasie@fedinsfw.app 10 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The truth is that most of the worst things to ever happen to you will be done by people you already know and trust, not strangers, regardless of race!

[–] Apytele@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

Statistically speaking the most likely person to murder me is my husband.

[–] nexguy@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

How do you get lost? Don't you guys have phones?

[–] nullspace@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

This ain't even written well.
