Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

6. Defend your opinion

This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

I have a very pragmatic view on music: all I care about is whether it sounds good or not. That's it. That's literally it. And from that standpoint the advent of AI music has been a major net positive for me.

You can choose to ignore that and come tell me about the ethics of using AI or how you care about the story behind the song and so on and that's all fine but just note that you're no longer addressing what I'm actually saying here.

I'm also not claiming it's great - only that it's good. I've yet to discover an AI song that I go back to like I do with many human-made songs but if I want to put on a playlist playing in the background then one consisting of entirely AI-made music reliably provides me well above average track after another whereas with organic music I need to sift through a ton of absolute crap to stumble upon the occasional good track that still rarely exceeds what AI is able to output. I can go on YouTube and put on a 2 hour playlist of Jazz House or similar and I don't get the urge to skip a single track.

Currently I feel like where AI still trips is lyrics - they still are only plausible sounding nonsense once you actually start paying attention to it but especially for instrumental music it has far exceeded the level of a good average human artist.

Few examples of what I'm refering to: with vocals and without.

jesus man, music - art - is about feeling something. what the fuck

[–] AcidiclyBasicGlitch@sh.itjust.works 2 points 25 minutes ago (1 children)

Unsettling is a feeling of sorts

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 1 points 4 minutes ago

that is insightful.

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 1 points 25 minutes ago (1 children)

There's no difference whatsoever between how a good AI song and a good organic one makes me feel. None.

[–] mojofrododojo@lemmy.world 1 points 3 minutes ago

make out with an atm machine? what, it's got slots....

[–] Frigidlollipop@lemmy.world 1 points 41 minutes ago (1 children)

Just sucks the ai learned it by stealing. Valid take though, I guess. It feels a lot like saying, "factory farming is great for me. All I care about is meat that tastes decent. That's it."

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 1 points 35 minutes ago

Factory farming isn't a bad analogue as it's the only morally indefensible behaviour I knowingly partake in. Though personally I'm unconvinced about the unethicality of AI, but that's not what this thread is about.

[–] mlg@lemmy.world 1 points 1 hour ago

Kevin Macleod already shared this sentiment and published AI generated and AI assisted tracks as well.

Kind of interesting considering he's the king of modern royalty free music.

[–] Noel_Skum@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

If you just want to be distracted and have happy ears then this seems a reasonable take.

I guess it’s a bit like burger chains - lowest common denominator for the largest market share. The thing is, the real food lovers will always be at the artisanal meat patty stand instead.

[–] trolololol@lemmy.world 1 points 2 hours ago

I though you'd say they won't eat burgers and will go to steak house or seafood restaurant.

I hate every sentence I just read. Take the upvote. AI music is the music for people who say they like all kinds of music. Music with no taste. Its like saying you could cook a potato a million ways but your favorite is raw.

Edit: since the music you posted is a pale imitation of trip hop please listen to something with some artistic value that might make you feel something.

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 1 points 42 minutes ago

I don't like all kinds of music. I don't even like most AI-generated music. I'm extremely picky about what I listen to. The thing with AI, however, is that if it can create one song in the style I like, it can then create a 2-hour playlist of songs just like that and they're all good. This is virtually never the case with human artists. When I find a good organic track and then go listen to other songs from that artist I usually don't like any of the other ones.

"all I care"

no. you do not care. you clearly state you would never put ai slop in your favourites, you just want one big play button to generate background noise.

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 1 points 48 minutes ago

you clearly state you would never put ai slop in your favourites

No I didn't.

[–] Baggie@lemmy.zip 6 points 5 hours ago (1 children)

It violates my sense of decency that you think a communicative medium can be replaced by something that can't communicate.

... You get a upvote but I'll be mad the entire time doing it

[–] Iconoclast@feddit.uk 1 points 50 minutes ago

All music is just melodic noise. None of it communicates anythin to me whether it's organic or AI made.

[–] Mr_Wobble@thelemmy.club 11 points 9 hours ago

I upvoted this, but now I need to go take a walk and cool off for a bit. 😡

[–] JonsJava@lemmy.world 8 points 8 hours ago

Congrats. I hate this opinion, so it fits!

[–] big_slap@lemmy.world 7 points 11 hours ago

this is a great post, upvoted cause I definitely don't like AI music

It doesn't make sense how someone can enjoy art that doesnt have some sort of connection with you, as its literally a bot manipulating your emotions, but I cannot and will not judge! life is too short lol

[–] Simon_Shitewood@lemmy.ml 52 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Unpopular, yes, but also an objectively wrong use of objectively. Subjectively you find that music enjoyable, but objectively it's a statistical average of the bog standard crap you can find on on basically any radio station. Nobody can stop you from enjoying that, but don't think it makes your personal taste anything other than statistically average.

You don’t like music, you like Muzak, and you have garbage taste.

Downvoting not for the unpopular opinion, but for not knowing what "objective" means

[–] yesman@lemmy.world 51 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

I have a very pragmatic view on music

You're quite self aware in your assessment, you just don't realize that being "pragmatic" about music is like being "efficient" about sex; you're doing it wrong.

[–] mikezeman@lemmy.zip 7 points 8 hours ago

This is an incredible comment

[–] AndyMFK@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I don't think you like music. Or even understand music.

That's ok, you don't have to, but you do not know what you're talking about.

Out of curiosity, can you tell me a human artist or band that you really like?

Congrats, you have an average taste in music?

AI are statistical algorithms. The current design means they can only ever be average.

[–] Untamed_Star@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 hours ago

Well yes but not really. I am not gonna act like I know much from this but I think there is some randomness in the results, that's why you just don't get the same thing every time. And there are also prompts, which is just them guessing the output based on your input and they were trained on input before blah blah blah.

In any case it would be kinda average but not really. Also the average of all music would probs sound terrible, just like when you mesh a bunch of pics together they make no sense.

I would guess it is average in a group or subgroup tho?

That's how I understand it. I mean I don't think the opinion is good, I hate it but uhhhh yea

[–] Multiplexer@discuss.tchncs.de 106 points 23 hours ago (9 children)

That for sure is an unpopular opinion and I also strongly disagree.

So, take my upvote ;-)

Apart from that, In my experience there is such an incredibly large pool of great music I haven't even heard yet, that the avalanche of AI generated music does not even improve the useful quantity for an individual in a significant way, not even talking about the quality.

I can’t believe nobody’s called you out on not knowing what “objectively” means yet.

Imagine bragging about being a mindless consumer.

[–] Dookieman12@piefed.social 12 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

all I care about is whether it sounds good or not

"I don't care about anyone but me or anything except for what I want"

You sound selfish and insufferable.
