So I signed up to transfem.social recently which runs Sharkey. Sharkey is a fork of Misskey that’s also compatible with the Mastodon API and federates with Mastodon servers. I’m extremely impressed by how easy and fun the user experience is so far. It has a great simple tutorial for new users, and achievement system (which you can turn off if you want), custom reactions, embedded swf files, and quite a bit more. IMO it blows Mastodon software out of the water as far as usability. It’s also a project led by trans devs which is cool too. You all should check it out if you’re curious: https://joinsharkey.org/

We're still working hard on the 1.0 release, needing a few more major additions to lemmy-ui, and some less critical items for lemmy.

Then it will be a period of performance and bug testing, as well as giving time to allow app devs to update to the API changes.

The major changes during November were:

Full list of changes by user

flamingos-cant

dessalines

Nutomic

Or see the full list of changes at the links below:

An open source project the size of Lemmy needs constant work to manage the project, implement new features and fix bugs. Dessalines and Nutomic work full-time on these tasks and more. As there is no advertising or tracking, all of our work is funded through donations. Even so there is barely enough time in the day, and no time for a second job. The only available option are user donations.

To keep it viable donations need to reach a minimum of 5000€ per month, resulting in a modest salary of 2500€ per developer. If that goal is reached we can stop worrying about money, and fully focus on improving the software for the benefit of all users and instances. We especially rely on recurring donations to secure the long-term development and make Lemmy the best it can be.

Posts from users on instances that use Cloudflare do not work correctly. The images in these posts do not load because Cloudflare deliberately blocks them from loading unless the post is viewed on the instance of the user who posted, not the instance of the community the post is in or the instance of the user browsing.

For example, this recent post in c/games. Clicking the thumbnail to expand the image results in a broken image, as shown:

Clicking the rainbow federation "show context" link to open the page on the user's home instance of lemmy.zip gives this Cloudflare page claiming to verify that I'm human (actually just harassing me for using a VPN as everyone should at all times):

Only after passing which do I get the post on lemmy.zip, where the image opens without further trouble:

Now, in order to vote or comment on the post, I'd have to go back to the original, broken page on my own instance.

To be clear, this is nothing against the post I'm using as an example or the user who posted it, but against that user's home instance's use of Cloudflare.

What is Lemmy?

Lemmy is a self-hosted social link aggregation and discussion platform. It is completely free and open, and not controlled by any company. This means that there is no advertising, tracking, or secret algorithms. Content is organized into communities, so it is easy to subscribe to topics that you are interested in, and ignore others. Voting is used to bring the most interesting items to the top.

Upgrade instructions

There are no breaking changes with this release.

Follow the upgrade instructions for ansible or docker.

If you need help with the upgrade, you can ask in our support forum or on the Matrix Chat.

Thanks to everyone

We'd like to thank our many contributors and users of Lemmy for coding, translating, testing, and helping find and fix bugs. We're glad many people find it useful and enjoyable enough to contribute.

Support development

We (@dessalines and @nutomic) have been working full-time on Lemmy for over five years. This is largely thanks to support from NLnet foundation, as well as donations from individual users.

If you like using Lemmy, and want to make sure that we will always be available to work full time building it, consider donating to support its development. A recurring donation is the best way to ensure that open-source software like Lemmy can stay independent and alive, and helps us grow our little developer co-op to support more full-time developers.

Hey everyone

We’re really sorry to say this, but lemm.ee will be shutting down on June 30, 2025.

What you need to know

As of now:

  • New user registrations are disabled
  • Creating new communities is disabled

What you should do:

  • You can export your settings at https://lemm.ee/settings to take them with you to another instance.
  • If you're moving to another instance, consider adding a note to your lemm.ee profile with your new username. Your old profile will still be visible from other instances even after we go offline.
  • Alternatively, if you want to delete your lemm.ee profile, now is the best time to do it, so the deletion can federate out before we go offline.
  • If you're one of the folks supporting us with a recurring donation, please remember to cancel it (Ko-Fi donations should have been cancelled automatically already). Our leftover funds are already enough to cover our bills for next month, so we can keep things running without any more support.

Because of how Lemmy is built, everything posted on lemm.ee will still be accessible from other instances, even after we go offline.

Why this is happening

The key reason is that we just don’t have enough people on the admin team to keep the place running. Most of the admin team has stepped down, mostly due to burnout, and finding replacements hasn’t worked out.

The sad reality is that while there are a lot of great people on Lemmy, there are also some who use the platform to attack others, stir up conflict, or actively try to undermine the project. Admins are volunteers who deal with the latter group on a constant basis, this takes a mental toll. Please understand why our admins chose to step down, and be kind to the admins on whatever instance you decide to join.

We know this sucks. We're genuinely sorry it’s ending like this. Thank you to everyone who spent time here and helped make it better.

– lemm.ee team

any updates on federation? our lemmy comrades are curious

In the last weeks Lemmy has seen a lot of growth, with thousands of new users. To welcome them we are holding this AMA to answer questions from the community. You can ask about the beginnings of Lemmy, how we see the future of Lemmy, our long-term goals, what makes Lemmy different from Reddit, about internet and social media in general, as well as personal questions.

We'd also like to hear your overall feedback on Lemmy: What are its greatest strengths and weaknesses? How would you improve it? What's something you wish it had? What can our community do to ensure that we keep pulling users away from US tech companies, and into the fediverse?

Lemmy and Reddit may look similar at first glance, but there is a major difference. While Reddit is a corporation with thousands of employees and billionaire investors, Lemmy is nothing but an open source project run by volunteers. It was started in 2019 by @dessalines and @nutomic, turning into a fulltime job since 2020. For our income we are dependent on your donations, so please contribute if you can. We'd like to be able to add more full-time contributors to our co-op.

We will start answering questions from tomorrow (Wednesday). Besides @dessalines and @nutomic, other Lemmy contributors may also chime in to answer questions:

Here are our previous AMAs for those interested.

The Hexbear Lemmy community recently lost control of their domain, leading to a bidding war for the domain name for thousands of dollars. The admins now report that they have gotten back control of their domain.

Finally, Hollo 0.1.0 released! Hollo is a single-user federated microblogging software which is ActivityPub-enabled and powered by Fedify.

Hollo has the most of features that Mastodon has except for moderation tools, and also include:

  • CommonMark (a.k.a. Markdown) and up to 4,096 characters per post
  • Misskey-style quotes (compatible with Misskey, Akkoma, Fedibird, etc)
  • Misskey-style emoji reactions (both Unicode emojis and custom emojis are supported; compatible with Misskey, Akkoma, kmyblue, etc)
  • Generally much relaxed limitations (more poll options, more attachments, and so on)
  • … and many more!

If you're interested in Hollo, please give it a try! There are several ways to install it: using Railway, using Docker (and Docker Compose), or manually.

If you're already using Hollo, please upgrade it to v0.1.0:

He'll yeah my siblings!!

So you might have heard of Grayjay already, but it's a multi-source video app that creates a hybrid feed from all sorts of places. Think like YouTube+SoundCloud+BilliBilli+Twitch+Patreon.

It's still in early-ish development but it's quite stable and it's not too buggy. The intent of the app is to allow you to follow creators without being stuck in a walled garden, or at least not one solitary walled garden anyway. Good if want to have a feed that includes sources from YouTube but also, say, Odysee so you can keep up with Red. given that Blinken just got them banned from YouTube.

But the coolest thing is that it also supports PeerTube instances so you can now watch videos and follow channels on that PeerTube instance.

Unfortunately their native plugin generators is buggy and won't work right but there's a workaround:

Once you've got Grayjay installed on your device, in your browser head to:
https://grayjay-peertube.github.io/

Click "Generate QR Code"

In the popup window, enter tankie.tube and click Generate QR Code

Click Open in Grayjay

It will open Grayjay and then all you have to do is to click install and you're done!

Remember to go in the Grayjay app and click More on the bottom bar, then Sources, ensure that the TankieTube plugin is enabled in the list of sources and open it to toggle the Visibility settings so that you will see TankieTube content where you want - on the homescreen and in the search, depending on your personal preference.

idk I was thinking federated social media was pretty peachy at the start of the year but with the total failure of the mastodon project to implement basic trust & safety features to keep black people from facing torrents of racism on there it might be cooked

I created this issue a few months ago and someone picked up the task and implemented the feature!

I never had enough time to learn Rust myself so shout out to the comrade who implemented it.

This should help ensure users are not accidentally sharing tracking codes.
