They should start going back now. Do Morrowind next.

[–] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 27 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

Morrowind's lore and artistic direction was far superior to Oblivion and Skyrim. I will fight people who disagree with this (not physically though, that hurts).

[–] boonhet@lemm.ee 18 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Absolutely. But at the same time, the base game is not all that approachable. Remake Morrowind with a proper combat system but leave the rest of the gameplay as is. I mean the lack of quest markers and everything. It's awesome the way it is. I'll buy several copies.

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 9 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I enjoyed the lack of the quest markers. The thrill of exploring the wilderness, trying to find the location, and the haunting cries of a Cliff Racer.

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 days ago (1 children)

the haunting cries of a Cliff Racer.

... for 30 minutes as it slowly slowly descends to your elevation to fight.

[–] Soggy@lemmy.world 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

The AI pathing could use some help, I'll admit.

[–] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 2 points 3 days ago

It's prefect as is. The Cliff Racer terrorizes it's target with the screams as it slowly moves in for the kill.

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Agreed. I remember hanging the paper map from the box on the wall beside me as reference while playing.

[–] very_well_lost@lemmy.world 4 points 3 days ago

That paper map was a masterpiece, and honestly, it's hard to imagine playing without it. It had all of the regions and major settlements labeled, but that was pretty much it. It was up to you to figure out where all the fast travel routes were, and there were so many tiny little details that were clearly something, but that were left completely unlabeled. If you wanted to find out what they were, you'd just have to go out and find them.

I'm struggling to remember anything else in gaming that tickled my imagination quite like that map...

Morrowind remake with Bloodmoon, Tribunal, and new additions on a map larger than Skyrim, in a self-contained portable VR set that also works as a handheld and PC. I will pay $10k for that if I have to live in a cardboard box.

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 32 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Tamerial Rebuilt, the Cyrodil mod, and the Skyrim mod, with either the Script Extender or with the OpenMW engine will do all of that for you.

[–] Remember_the_tooth@lemmy.world 12 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Good to know. How do I get started learning how to do all that?

Modding openmw is also a very helpful resource https://modding-openmw.com/

[–] Septimaeus@infosec.pub 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Is this $10k for high fantasy or low reality?

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago (4 children)
[–] vinnymac@lemmy.world 31 points 4 days ago

Well if the pattern is to be followed, we have three more oblivion releases, and 3 more morrowind releases. So that’s like a decade at least

[–] SupremeDonut@lemmy.ml 6 points 4 days ago

Omg the arena in Morrowind...

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Right now for free, now using Unity

You'd be surprised how good it can get with mods. In comparison to the OG game of course.

Example playthrough

[–] TachyonTele@lemm.ee 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They already have Daggerfall Unity.
I kinda wonder if that had something to do with the decision to do Oblivion.

[–] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 11 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's probably more to do with preempting the eagerly anticipated Skyblivion, which is scheduled for release some time this year..

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 8 points 4 days ago (2 children)

no do daggerfall just to fuck with people

[–] reksas@sopuli.xyz 3 points 3 days ago

daggerfall remake might be interesting

[–] UltraGiGaGigantic@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 days ago (3 children)

Euro truck simulator: elder scrolls edition

[–] Burninator05@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Skyrim: Tamriel Cart Driver

[–] OutlierBlue@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

Euro truck simulator: Fast travel

[–] theblips@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago

That is a good elevator pitch

[–] ExtantHuman@lemm.ee 1 points 3 days ago

No. Bad. Stop it. New games only. You can go play Morrowind yourself already.
