I think it's more to do with moving goal posts after winning. Sort of like the Overton window but just to fit the reactionary worldview in the culture wars idk

Exactly, the outrage tourists can never truly “win” in their narrative because if they’re ever not the put upon victim, then they’re no longer acting in self-defense. And if they present themselves as winning, their continued assaults are bullying at that point.

There’s a quote in What’s The Matter with Kansas where Frank describes the sense of the right that they must tell themselves they’re losing even when they’re winning.

Hence why they cannot recognize that they’ve won. They treat the right the same way someone treats weightlifting: even if they do appreciate the progress thus far, NEVER be satisfied. Satisfaction breeds complacency.
