AVATAR 3

Perverts Guide to Ideology

founded 5 years ago
MODERATORS

I just wanted to highlight this rather simple comment and suggestion from @@TraschcanOfIdeology@hexbear.net. This youtube series is a great watch.

Avatar: The Last Airbender might have some rather lib'd up parts, but there was so much more interesting philosophy in that show. Specifically surrounding the idea of rehabilitation regarding Zuko. It handles the nature of empire far better as well when dealing with the Fire Nation.

There are so many things about Korra that could have been interesting things to explore. It's mentioned in the video series, but the thing that has always stood out to me is the cheapening of bending as a form of both labor and cultural and personal expression.

In ATLA, there are many feats of bending that are held in extremely high regard, especially in terms of the skill required to perform them. Metal Bending is the result of Toffs extremely developed earth bending skills. Lightning Bending is a skill reserved for only elite fire benders, and the power to redirect lightning is held by only two characters in the whole series. Aang learns the power of the Avatar State through much struggle, and also learns the ability of energy bending from an ancent mythical creature.

There is this real sense of connection between Bending and Nature expressed on ATLA. The idea that some of the original benders were natural creatures, like Dragons, or Badger Moles or Lion Turtle drives home this idea that in order to bend an element, you must be in tune with that element, understand it in both a physical and spiritual capacity.

But in Korra all of that uniqueness is wiped away. Now, tossing lightning is the work of Power Grid laborers. Something your average fire bender can perform for a wage at the electrical company. Pro Bending is a kind of distillation of the bending art form into extremely narrow base components and movements that restricts the kind of creativity and expressiveness found in ATLA, and all performed in a hyper-competitive environment for the chance at becoming rich and famous. Blood Bending, once something only capable of being performed under a full moon, is something that can be trained to perform under any conditions. It's become a powerful bending tool that can even take away someone's bending. The implications of which are beyond the scope of what I'm writing here, but just another example of the cheapening of ATLAs feats. Even Aang is thrown into the mix, being shown to use his energy bending ability to punish low level criminals (by comparison).

In the case of lighting bending and pro bending, these are expressions of a kind of alienation we all understand to be a core attribute of Capitalism. This is an interesting idea that the show never explores. What does it mean to be an Earth Bender, in a world where the cultural norms associated with earth bending and the earth kingdom have been destroyed, or warped, by these new social relations? What kind of techniques and skills could have been lost under seeking this new, more efficient form of bending? And what does it mean to be a "master of all 4 elements" in world where increasingly, bending is being whittled down to only its most useful forms in support of this new industrial world?

One could imagine an avatar series that draws on similar themes to that of Princess Mononoki or Castle In The Sky. One that tries to find the "balance" between industrialization and our existence within nature (aka the connection to the elements). Instead, what we get is a show that undermines the achievements of its predecessor, while having almost nothing of value to say at all.

I liked Egghead well enough, but maybe that's just because it came after Wano which was a fucking dumpster fire.

Wano was terrible. The moment Luffy asked "then what happened?" about that Oden guy... It felt like some other guy had taken over OP and put in his dogshit OC so he could have all the characters praise him.

But I gotta be honest, I even skipped a bunch of Dressrosa chapters. The guy needs an editor instead of a gooner-in-chief, which is what he has now from what I can read. I liked the lead-up to Wano with the animal people and the big elephant okay enough, but then it just got dumber and dumber and longer and longer.

The 1-2 of Wano and Egghead both promising lore and delivering fuck-all... The constant need to reinvent the wheel. Gear 5 just being the same 3 tired jokes again and again and again. 9/10ths of the crew have no purpose. Haki sucks butt too.

I checked out early into Elbaph. I can't do this anymore boss, I'm tired. I remember years ago when the story came to Fishman Island, and that's the first time I walked away. Then people talked about some Big Thing happening, so I decided to come back and honestly everything post timeskip has felt like a slog. There's no joir de vivre, but there's also no grit. Like if the story you wanna tell is one of the strawhats realising it's time to lock in, then you gotta tell that story. You can't just handwave away the death of the vibe by saying "times are tough" without engaging with the tough times. Dressrosa and moms island were fine, but jesus christ cut down the chapters man.

I don't know if it's just because I've turned sour, but his character design has also just gotten so much worse. Big booba lady, guy with his tongue out 24/7, elderly statesman. And his characterisation of the strawhats. I miss when Zoro laughed, I miss when Robin wasn't just taller Nami and I miss when she wasn't white. And Usopp goes through the same character arc in every arc - if he gets enough screentime. I miss when Sanji wasn't a creep. I miss when I could parse what the fuck was happening on the panels.

Then again I enjoyed Luffys fight with Don Krieg, which is not common apparently. I miss when Luffy didn't Deus Ex Machina his ass, but instead either did something impressive like tanking Kriegs spikes or punching Crocodile with his blood. The gears suck and so does haki.

This became a ventcomment. Anyway the constant asspull of noone actually being dead ruins any sense of tension there was left. And then when they do meet up with people they thought were dead, the exagerrated and shared reactions from every single person ruins any sense of joy from seeing people reunite.

Also the whole thing with the 5 elders having powers annoyed me too. And the evil twin.

More or less agree. Whole Cake was good largely because it was short.

I would however argue that Sanji was always a creep lol.

[–] BanMeFromPosting@hexbear.net 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

He was always a creep, but now he's been completely flanderised. And the creep-thing has been reduced from "waiter hitting on a customer while her date sits across from her" to "almost dies from a nosebleed because he sees hot mermaids."

edit: I forgot to mention the retcon of Luffys fruit, turning him into some kind of chosen one, completely ruins the story. Also "being the pirate king" isn't Luffys dream or goal????? Jesus fucking christ man turn over the story to someone else who still cares about it enough to finish it.

That moment in Egghead where a guy turns into a Dune Worm just a couple weeks after Dune came out... It really made me realise how far up his own ass Oda has gotten.

There will never be another "Shoot this flag" moment - In part because the strawhats don't talk to eachother anymore.
"Oh hey Luffy, I'm back from hanging out for two years with your dad doing revolutionary army stuff, there's a bunch of stuff to tell you. Did you know you old friend is actually alive?" <- Not Robin for some reason
