Amazing to see Jon back. I watched The Daily Show with Jon Stewart obsessively for years, and never thought to see this again. He's still got it. Just a few more white hairs.

[-] alquicksilver@lemmy.world 44 points 10 months ago

Given that I also aged in the interim, I prefer his current look. He's a silver fox.

I haven't laughed that hard in a while. I'm grateful that he's back to give us a way to laugh through the bullshit and motivate us to keep fighting.

Literally almost spit out my iced latte this am watching. Glad to see him back. Great show.

His Apple TV show was great too, except for Apple being scared to let anybody criticize China.

[-] emptybamboo@midwest.social 16 points 10 months ago

I liked the Apple TV show, too. The podcast was one of my absolute go-to's every week, even if I was not that interested in the topic. He said something in one of them similar to the idea he had at the end of Monday's TDS where he said that if you want to do change, it takes hard work on the local level. If you want to get out of the mind-fuck that is national politics in the US (and I'd argue in most places), you need to actually pay attention to what is happening in your own neighborhood and try to fix that.

[-] DigitalTraveler42@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Which is a fair point, but also at the local level is where it's more challenging, because not only are you getting involved with things that more directly affect you, but also you can make yourself a target to those that want to push change in the other direction, so of course not everyone is up to that task and that's why the overly aggressive conservatives constantly eat our lunches on the local level, and why they tend to scare off folks trying to change things at the local level.

This is happening all across the country, it's why many of the more moderate Republicans have resigned or left their party, their districts, and it's a barrier for Left leaning folks. I believe in Margorie Taylor Greene's district one of the contenders against her was harassed and threatened to the point of dropping out of the race.

The Left needs brave people that are ready to lay their lives on the line for what we believe, the stakes are as high as they've ever been, and so is the danger, and it's not like we can count on the authorities to do their jobs to protect us, because they've clearly shown that they are either incapable or unwilling, especially the fact that the thin blue line flag now flies in every law enforcement building, and if anything that flag is synonymous with fascism, MAGA, and police protectionism from consequences.

Joe Biden is not wrong when he says that this election is "a battle for the soul of the nation" because quite obviously it is, and if Trump is elected there will he no progress made politically against this type of stuff anytime soon.

Yeah, its weird tos ee how young he looked back then. I never put much thought into that. It didnt feel like it was that long ago.

It would be great if he could get Steven Colbert and John Oliver to take up their roles as again, too.

Just watching the beginning and seeing him scribble on a piece of paper gave me chills. Such a little thing but I've never seen anyone else do that, and I guess it just means the Daily Show is about to start!

Jon Stewart is such a pro. He’s at the top of his game, even still. He’s just so far above other political commentators it’s beautiful to watch.

And if Colbert makes an appearance this season I will scream like Flanders at those purple drapes.

[-] Serinus@lemmy.world 35 points 10 months ago

I think Colbert is happy to be done with that character. Besides, it's been proven that no matter how ridiculous the character gets, people will still vote for it

[-] Thrillhouse@lemmy.world 21 points 10 months ago

It doesn’t need to be permanent.

I’d almost argue that the Colbert Report is more relevant now because it was a satire of Fox News and right wing news has gotten even more crazy than it was 10+ years ago.

[-] Hoagie@lemmy.ca 37 points 10 months ago

I'd like to see him come back for an episode and try to play the right-wing pundit satirization, only to keep getting out-crazied by the actual right-wing pundits.

[-] AngryCommieKender@lemmy.world 6 points 10 months ago

The most trusted name in news for basically the entirety of my adult life. He's absolutely amazing. Shame he'll never run for office.

[-] discostjohn@programming.dev 50 points 10 months ago

That was amazing. I'm so glad he's back, even in a limited capacity.

Free from the shackles of AppleTV. It's nice to see him back in the seat where I learned about him the first time many many years ago.

[-] Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world 25 points 10 months ago

My hot take is that he’s also much better when given constrained time. The Problem was interesting, but his comedy and commentary is forced to be much more clear and concise on the Daily Show. And when something bombs, the Daily Show doesn’t leave time to wade through a segment that isn’t working.

[-] P1r4nha@feddit.de 7 points 10 months ago

Not a bad take. I agree he's funnier in the constrained time, but I also liked the The Problem where he had more time for thoughtful discussions, interviews and debates. A lot less funny though.

[-] CosmicCleric@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

Might also just be different and better writers on The Daily Show. /shrug

That was fucking great.

[-] Tylerdurdon@lemmy.world 26 points 10 months ago

Welcome back Jon. You haven't lost an inch and I'm happy to get some sanity back in my life.

[-] rustyfish@lemmy.world 21 points 10 months ago

A great watch!

[-] scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech 21 points 10 months ago

With media screaming in both directions at all times, it's great to see the supreme satirist spinning it all for us. Welcome back, Jon!

[-] cholesterol@lemmy.world 13 points 10 months ago

It's great to see him back in the chair. Something about his speech is odd, though. The S's especially.

1:38 "Schuperbowl" 2:09 "...Chiefs rost"

[-] discostjohn@programming.dev 15 points 10 months ago

I found this concerning too, until I watched the beginning again. He was chewing on his lip during the intro, and they might have done a few takes of that shot. He says superbowl perfectly fine at 8:11

[-] SidewaysHighways@lemmy.world 17 points 10 months ago

I think he's getting used to dentures or something like that

[-] ikidd@lemmy.world 11 points 10 months ago

That makes sense. His teeth look a lot better than they did back in the day, I was wondering why. I mean, does a 50yo man get braces done no matter how much money he has? Would it even work? Probably not.

[-] SidewaysHighways@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

Nah personally I always figured I would get some Terminator teeth installed once I got on up there in the age category

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@literature.cafe 9 points 10 months ago

Y'all could also consider brushing. Dentures are not something absolutely everyone will need anymore.

I immediately recognized it as the same thing my dad did for awhile after he got his. Dentures lower the roof of your mouth a bit, so you have to get used to it and your mouth still tries to fall back on muscle memory for awhile, so you get weird sounding S's.

I think it's this.

Where's a piped bot when you need one?

I don't think they work on posts, just on comments. Let's see if they'll respond to my link

I've seen some complaints about him not going hard enough on Trump and trying to do a false equivalency with Biden being old. I don't see that. My impression was he was trying to appear impartial at first so when he does go hard on Trump later people won't question his motives. It's a marathon not a sprint.

Also by him saying they are both old he takes that issue off the table when comparing the two. So now it's not "one has dementia, the other is a fascist". It becomes "one is not a fascist, and the other is a fascist".
