Because you are starving yourself anon

Of course your senses gonna be enthusiastic when they see a single gram of external energy

[-] Dasus@lemmy.world 15 points 4 months ago

During the hundreds of thousands of years we were nomadic persistence hunters, do you think we ate daily? Three square meals?

A rough rule of thumb is humans can go 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food and 3 minutes without oxygen.

Humans have literally evolved to fast for long periods and then have a huge feast once the prey is caught.

So no, he's not "starving" himself by avoiding stuffing his face for a few days.

starving

Calorie deficit that causes weight loss is starving. It's the definition of the word.

[-] Dasus@lemmy.world 10 points 4 months ago

It isn't though. Why didn't you even check, when leaving a comment like that?

starvation

noun

*suffering or death caused by lack of food.

"thousands died of starvation"

Op didn't suffer. In fact, quite the opposite, wouldn't you say?

I started fasting thanks to my childhood hero’s unintended advice. I’d seen him around all the time but never managed to talk to him as a kid. Even after he’d improved, he was still frequently blue but became elated at the mere mention of fasting. He could go on about it for ages, bragging and joking.

All the friends in the world couldn’t break his unhealthy lifestyle, but they certainly tried. His best friend Miles in particular tried everything to get him to eat well, but concern can't overcome inertia, only aid you in doing so.

The 90s were a rough time for him and I sincerely believe that fasting saved his life. I caught a glimpse of him back then standing on the sidewalk with a hotdog in each hand, chili dripping off his face, belly distended and groaning like a ship losing rivets, surrounded by worried faces. His eyes shot open as he finally overcame inertia. He said to no one in particular the words that changed my paunchy little life. “Gotta go fast.”

I did try to spoiler this to not spoil the other comment, but I couldn't get it to work. Can you spoiler images?

Fasting has changed my life.

Fast for 20 hours, eat for 4, then do whatever I want 1 day a week. I've lost 50 pounds and kept it off for 8 years. Any time I start to creep back up, I'll start fasting again. Magic.

[-] Reddfugee42@lemmy.world 9 points 4 months ago

The "do whatever you want one day a week" implies that you do the 20/4 six days a week?

You shouldn't do this kind of stuff without talking to your doctor and have a blood panel done.

[-] Guajojo@lemmy.world 42 points 4 months ago

For water only and 3 days in a row yes, but fasting once a week is harmless and has benefits

A non-underweight and otherwise healthy adult can forego food for a week without issue, it's not that big a deal. We would never have survived evolution if we couldn't do that.

[-] dlok@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

It's exactly why we store energy as fat in the first place, so when the getting is good it prepares us for when it isn't.

No kidding. I've been malnourished before. There's a moment after taking vitamins and having a meal when it feels like the best drug ever. Better than dilaudid. Better than cocaine. Better than an orgasm. Apparently, according to my previous sexual partners and what I I've seen in pornos, I tend to have way more intense and longer lasting orgasms than most males. Still, the feeling of getting nutrients in my bloodstream after starving felt better than that...for about 20-30 mins! I was seriously just rubbing my skin and stretching my muscles, looking like I was in pure ecstasy. Imagine the peak of orgasm for 20-30 mins long. If that feeling could be turned into a drug, it would be the most addictive drug ever known.

[-] lightnsfw@reddthat.com 20 points 4 months ago

I do intermittent fasting (apparently, wasn't aware of the concept until a friend of mine was describing it as there new diet plan and I was like "Damn, I've been doing that for years") and usually feel like shit after I eat. Not sure they're related though it might be that I just have a shitty digestive system.

[-] KyuubiNoKitsune@lemmy.blahaj.zone 11 points 4 months ago

I think it's called heroin.

[-] Car@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 4 months ago

I tried water fasting and felt great until around day 3 when insomnia kicked in

[-] empireOfLove2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 64 points 4 months ago

That would be about the point where your body runs out of natural electrolyte stores. Eating is more than calories, we constantly consume small amounts of electrolytes, vitamins, minerals, etc, all calorie-neutral things that are exceptionally vital to your body functioning right. Once those levels get wack, weird shit starts to happen.

It's why dieting is less about "stop eating" and more about "eat less but choose small amounts of very nutrient dense (NOT calorie dense) foods".

[-] andrewth09@lemmy.world 30 points 4 months ago

So what I am hearing is I need to drink Gatorade around day 3. Got it.

[-] ryannathans@aussie.zone 8 points 4 months ago

Glycogen might have run out, or ran out of amino acids/protein and consequently neurotransmitters until muscle wasting accelerates

[-] dudinax@programming.dev 23 points 4 months ago

Sorry Anon, everything you say is true, but you're sentencing yourself to thinking about food all day every day.

[-] 33550336@lemmy.world 20 points 4 months ago

Fasting may be not healthy, unless your doctor say it is good for you. I've tried fasting and now I am a classic yo-yo problem example.

[-] SplashJackson@lemmy.ca 19 points 4 months ago

You've tried fasting, yes, but have you tried slowing?

[-] daemoz@lemmy.world 14 points 4 months ago

Yoyo is more of a consistency issue imo. Calories in calories out is all of it. If you are yo yoing weight you are changing something at each end. I have always had that issue on diets until IF because life happens and you lose routine. With if I just dont eat unless I know its time, and my stomach is small so I fill up quicker. I bounced 230-270 for a decade. Now maintaining 190-200 and thats mostly water weight bouncing.

What's water fasting? Not drinking enough water for multiple days?

[-] ProfDizzyStick@lemmy.world 48 points 4 months ago

Only drinking water and not eating.

[-] zarkony@lemmy.zip 26 points 4 months ago

Probably just only drinking water. AKA a normal fast.

Though to be fair most fasts still allow for other zero calorie drinks, like tea or coffee.

[-] SonnyVabitch@lemmy.world 7 points 4 months ago

Obviously without milk or sugar or other calorie rich additives to be precise.

Stupid fad where people cycle consuming nothing but water for three days. Intermittent fasting (eg 14hr/day) is a far better approach

Ramadan isn't that far away from now, maybe you should try that. Or don't, it's just a suggestion.

[-] Wanderer@lemm.ee 29 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

Ramadan is fucked.

At first I was like idgf what people do. But then my mate told me every Ramadan doctors and nurses collapse while on the job due to Ramadan.

Just imagine telling some kid "sorry your mum died, but the nurse fucked up the medicine because she was incredibly dehydrated because some guy that lived in a tent 2000 years ago commanded it".

They should have to use their holiday days. Or just do their fucking job.

[-] Maggoty@lemmy.world 19 points 4 months ago

Yeah they're not supposed to be fasting. Anyone who has even the slightest physical reason is excused. The poor, the ill, the old, the young, the pregnant, the required workers like doctors, police, fire, power line guys, etc ...

If doctors and nurses are fasting it's because they want to and if they're passing out then they should be taking immediate steps to rectify that because they now fall into the ill category.

While people who are ill and nurses/doctors are excluded from fasting, I have no doubt some of them still do.

In boarding school one of my best friends was from Turkey, and I joined him for Ramadan. I actually had a lot of fun, we’d hoard food from the cafeteria throughout the day in his room, then hang out all night.

I’d never do it on my own, especially because I have no connection to the religion, but I’m still glad I participated.

I do a short fast 1-2 times a year and this isn't far off. Hunger day 1 and 2 but by day 3 you're full of energy. I wouldn't break it with a juice box though, I like to do an Apple. Stick to whole foods and healthy fats.

[-] Dasus@lemmy.world 12 points 4 months ago

He's not exaggerating.

[-] Varyk@sh.itjust.works 8 points 4 months ago

Can attest. I feel a little high after 24 hours or so on a water fast too, tingly and spaced, it's an enjoyable way to safely lose weight.

Still plenty of energy of I have anything to do, but I can zone out watching tv all day and lose another half pound, or go for a long walk and goodbye a pound that day.

[-] Mr_Blott@lemmy.world 14 points 4 months ago

Sounds like a good way to lose money if you're in the UK
