If your goal is rehabilitation, driving people insane with sleep deprivation isn't going to help.

Secondly, think about how irritated and pissy you are when you don't get enough sleep. Now imagine that in an entire prison population. You're asking for trouble.

The goal pf US prisons is the continuation of slavery with a heaping side of punishment.

Note that it is frequently named the Department of Corrections, or in this case Criminal Justice, not the Department of Rehabilitation.

If your goal is rehabilitation

Why would a for profit prison system want to rehabilite anyone?

If the prison population dips below a certain point, they don't get as much money, it's literally in most contracts for prison services that the prison must maintain a certain number of prisoners.

The easiest way to keep them full, is to add charges for people already in prison. You do that by making their lives hell and putting them in situations where even a rational person would become stressed and prone to violence.

Even if they get out, they'll be back.

Tldr:

The American prison system is designed for the opposite of rehabilitation.

It's designed to maximize profits, and that means maximizes prisoners.

Not to mention you basically get blacklisted form most jobs for life. If they were not discriminating, they wouldn't need to check.

[-] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 18 points 7 months ago

Doesn't even have to be life.

If you can't get a job in the first couple months out of prison, that's often a parole violation and you're going back.

So you take a shit job for minimum wage that isn't enough to live off, and still need to resort to crime to make ends meet.

Nothing about the system makes productive citizens, because that's not what makes the system money.

Unfortunately both parties think privatization is the path forward for most of the government

Rehabilitation? What are you talking about? This is america

He's been fighting this obvious injustice for 11 years. Where the court has put the burden on him to show that only getting alotted 4 hours of sleep every night (while getting woken up at the 2 hour mark for mandatory roll call) has caused him harm. Instead of taking literally every medical professionals opinion, who all say at least 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep is required for basic functioning, with any less causing serious health issues.

11 years, where the court has repeatedly dismissed, and been told to reconsider upwards of four different times. 11 years.

Serious question, does anyone still have faith in the justice system?

You mean the slavery v2 system? Seems like it works as designed.

[-] tsonfeir@lemm.ee 23 points 7 months ago

If they want to sleep all fucking day, they should be able to.

[-] xlash123@sh.itjust.works 7 points 7 months ago

While you definitely should be able to get a full night's sleep, sleeping all day (at least consistently) could lead to physical and mental problems. So a humane prison should get the prisoners out of bed and doing something productive.

[-] tsonfeir@lemm.ee 17 points 7 months ago

They should provide something productive to get them out of bed, not get them out of bed to be productive.

[-] Aviandelight@mander.xyz 7 points 7 months ago

I feel like that statement is the crux of all human existence right now.

They're not there to rehab, they're there to make someone's widgets or dig ditches on the cheap.

[-] tsonfeir@lemm.ee 1 points 7 months ago

I hope you don’t agree with that.

[-] andrew@lemmy.stuart.fun 1 points 7 months ago

I don't. Just commenting on the state of the system.

One of the things I hate seeing is appeal to authority in matters like criminal justice and military affairs. The right loves to roll out prison guards and (specific types of) veterans like they're the only ones who have any authority to speak because they're the only ones who "get it."

No, motherfuckers, they're stuck in an extreme and potentially traumatic job that allows them no leeway to imagine anything other than fixing the immediate problem in front of them, and they come out of those jobs with only a small window into what would be best for people in their position, and in the short term. They're generally conditioned to view their "opponents" as dehumanized Other, they generally have no training whatsoever in policy matters, and they all self-selected (to varying degrees based on economic prospects) to join those career paths in the first place. Add on, some of them are just straight up stupid and/or cruel. Yes, they should absolutely be consulted and considered, particularly about on-the-ground implementation, but they are possibly the single worst group of people to give a privileged role in policy making.

If a prison is doing something that instinctively sounds awful to do to humans, and the prison guards say they "have to," those claims deserve fair hearing, but decision makers should default to instant skepticism, not deference. Even when there's some "there" there, it's probably solely to make life more convenient for those with the power, and their specific solutions, especially ad hoc ones, are going to be geared towards maximizing that convenience for them, rather than minimizing the amount of coercion needed to make their jobs safe and practical.

The vast majority of prisoners, even in overstuffed American prisons, probably have some anger (maybe from getting incarcerated, and that often after selective enforcement of something that's not really damaging to society) and probably have some gaps in their long-term planning skills. Of COURSE it's going to be difficult to manage them. The people who are confronted with that reality shouldn't get carte blanche to do whatever the fuck they like, though, and it's up to the rest of us who are not jaded by an admittedly tough job (would be easier with fewer prisoners who are there for shorter periods, of course) to hold them to a humane standard.

I wonder how many problems can be solved with more sleep.

[-] BirdEnjoyer@kbin.social 5 points 7 months ago

Finding out that my migraine medication had the side effect of improving my sleep quality was really incredible, so I'll say its a lot of problems.

[-] UltraMagnus0001@lemmy.world 10 points 7 months ago

A recipe for more violence... a bunch of sleep deprived inmates with no sex!
