Anarchism is a social movement that seeks liberation from oppressive systems of control including but not limited to the state, capitalism, racism, sexism, speciesism, and religion. Anarchists advocate a self-managed, classless, stateless society without borders, bosses, or rulers where everyone takes collective responsibility for the health and prosperity of themselves and the environment.

Max Nettlau, born on the 30th of April in 1865, was an anarchist historian whose biographical subjects included Bakunin, Malatesta, and Élisée Reclus. His enormous collection of primary materials is held by the International Institute of Social History.

Max Nettlau was born in Neuwaldegg (Austria) to an affluent family. Nettlau's skepticism of state authority began at a young age; his memoirs state that, even as a child, he 'somehow considered the supporter of any government system as a seriously defective person'.

Formally, Nettlau studied linguistics, authoring his doctoral thesis on the Welsh language. While a student in London, he became a member of the Socialist League, the only organization he was ever to join according to the International Institute of Social History (IISG).

As an anarchist activist, Nettlau wrote articles for John Most's Freiheit and befriended famous anarchists such as Peter Kropotkin, Elisée Reclus, and Errico Malatesta.

Nettlau was an avid collector of materials of social movements. Not just manuscripts by anarchist authors (although original texts by Bakunin became a part of his collection), but the actual pamphlets, bulletins, and papers of social movements themselves.

Among Nettlau's works as an author are the first major biography of Michael Bakunin, biographies of anarchists Elisée Reclus and Errico Malatesta, and a seven volume work on the history of anarchism. A significantly shorter, one volume version is available in English as "A Short History of Anarchism".

In 1935, Nettlau sold his archive (described by the IISH as "enormous") to the newly found International Institute of Social History, where it remains to this day.

Nettlau died 1944 from stomach cancer in Amsterdam, having fled his native Austria follow the country's "Anschluss" to Nazi Germany in 1938.

"Do I want to propose my own system? Not at all! I am an advocate of all systems, i.e. of all forms of government that find followers."

I keep writing bits and deleting them cuz they aren't strong enough

Do we have a bit refinery I can send these to? I think there's potential, they just need further processing

"No shoes, no shirt, no service" is a policy designed to racially exclude hobbits.

I've been learning guitar, and I told my partner about it and they said I was a polymath. Well technically, they said I was, "Giving polymath" because the Twitter brainrot is real.

Twitter would go down right now. I literally worked on my weaving project so late so that I could show it off there and now I cant! This is an outrage!

The infrastructure for dealing with the COVID pandemic has decayed so much I can't even schedule a test because some script on the website errors out lmaooo

I tried Chrome and Firefox and Safari, death to Javascript and the web

I guess I just have to call this pharmacy and see if I can just go in whenever

No one noticed people can't schedule tests??? Unless it's just me somehow

I can't afford therapy so I just imagine Dr Melfi from The Sopranos trying her best not to laugh when I tell her I listen to CumTown on shuffle everyday. That's pretty much how I manage to make it through the work week.

The desire to write alien invasion fiction vs. the necessity to come up with the seemingly impossible conditions that would allow for an expansionist, class-based society to take to the stars 😞

I had one of those moments where I found myself livid with the rainbow-clad witch in the room and the more in agreement with the quiet and more surface-level old fashioned guy the other day. There was a lot of concentrated liberalism in the room in the span of an hour. The witch lady saying she was willing to overlook what we're doing in Gaza to have gender and women's rights 'preserved' by the Biden admin. The old fashioned guy at another point, while still a lib, was more than willing to point out the evils of the Red Scare and how Walt Disney was a fascist.

In any case, I'd rather not return to the music circle that I've been a part of for several years. That dismissal of a genocide had Phil Ochs wailing in my head.

[–] ashinadash@hexbear.net 10 points 1 year ago

willing to overlook what we're doing in Gaza

Fine with genocide...

to have gender and women's rights 'preserved' by the Biden admin

...as long as the guy whose admin let Roe v Wade get repealed and transphobic bills pass all day keeps doin' his thing.

Also though "genocide to preserve gender" is an extremely direct expression of gender fascism, fuck agony-shivering

Okay I talked to the powers that be about failing a class and there is nothing i can do about it now but next semester I can retake it can replace the grade on my transcript so it will only hurt me temporarily

not the best outcome cause it’ll still suck for the next six months but it’s better than nothing

I'm gonna stay sober today because I think too much THC is giving me headaches and fries my brain. But it's a lot easier to focus and be creative when I'm on something. I just need medication that makes my brain work good but this is what zero healthcare does to a motherfucker. 😿

I find it so weird that when referring to agressive dogs that have to be put down, so many normal people refer to it as "destroying" the dogs. I get that it's the legal term because they're legally considered property, I just find it weird so many regular people seem to know that and use it. It's such an odd term to use for pets if you aren't a judge or animal control.

in terms of panic vs. actual danger water-in-ear is a real standout, most sorts of physical pain are relieved when you're lying down and you get some rest from it, but that's exactly when you notice water in your ear most. horrible sensation, even if its mostly harmless
