Ants are eusocial insects of the family Formicidae and, along with the related wasps and bees, belong to the order Hymenoptera. Ants evolved from vespoid wasp ancestors in the Cretaceous period. More than 13,800 of an estimated total of 22,000 species have been classified. They are easily identified by their geniculate (elbowed) antennae and the distinctive node-like structure that forms their slender waists.

Ants form colonies that range in size from a few dozen individuals often living in small natural cavities to highly organised colonies that may occupy large territories with sizeable nest that consist of millions of individuals or into the hundreds of millions in super colonies. Typical colonies consist of various castes of sterile, wingless females, most of which are workers (ergates), as well as soldiers (dinergates) and other specialised groups. Nearly all ant colonies also have some fertile males called "drones" and one or more fertile females called "queens" (gynes). The colonies are described as superorganisms because the ants appear to operate as a unified entity, collectively working together to support the colony.

Ants have colonised almost every landmass on Earth. The only places lacking indigenous ants are Antarctica and a few remote or inhospitable islands. Ants thrive in moist tropical ecosystems and may exceed the combined biomass of wild birds and mammals. Their success in so many environments has been attributed to their social organisation and their ability to modify habitats, tap resources, and defend themselves. Their long co-evolution with other species has led to mimetic, commensal, parasitic, and mutualistic relationships.

Ant societies have division of labour, communication between individuals, and an ability to solve complex problems. These parallels with human societies have long been an inspiration and subject of study. Many human cultures make use of ants in cuisine, medication, and rites. Some species are valued in their role as biological pest control agents. Their ability to exploit resources may bring ants into conflict with humans, however, as they can damage crops and invade buildings. Some species, such as the red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) of South America, are regarded as invasive species in other parts of the world, establishing themselves in areas where they have been introduced accidentally.

Yesterday I woke up with a really sore neck that made it hard to sit in my desk and look at my monitor, which were all my plans for the day, so I looked at my phone in bed in a bad position instead. That has led to me waking up with a sore neck today too.

What can we learn from this? I am being structurally oppressed by kinematics.

To whoever convinced me to look into fountain pens like 6 months ago:

  • I now do completely insufferable EDC things.

  • But it is only Chinese things.

  • My Chinese clone sebenza and Chinese Pilot Custom 823 homage (Asvine V126) and $3 titanium prybar are cool thank you for poisoming my brain.

  • Why do people pay $800 for the "real" versions of these things? It is incredible to me.

What do you do when you were taught to write somewhat efficient code in college but now everyone considers a series of functions stolen from GitHub (by chatgpt) a program and efficient code wastes time

Continuing my Batman movie marathon, i rewatched The Dark Knight Rises for the first time since I saw it in the theater as a kid. Even as a kid in a Fox News household (in fact, probably because of that) I saw Bane's plan as commentary on Occupy. Even funnier watching it now - it really is every conservative circa 2012's nightmare scenario, followed by their fantasy of an epic cop army fighting back.

That said it's a decently entertaining movie. I never actually watched its two predecessors until now. Begins is sort of underrated. TDK is TDK. I like Bale as Bruce Wayne because he's basically Patrick Bateman.

Might do an effort post or something when I'm done with them all. Skipping BvS though because fuck that.

A lot of the Colorado outdoors people I've interacted with manage to somehow be insufferable townies and aggravating tourists at the same time. These people don't live in the mountains. They go to the mountains, like you go to a theme park, and then they leave the mountains, and they don't leave any part of themselves in the mountains. They're disney adults with 10,000 dollar mountain bikes, townie arrogance, and tourist ignorance. It's really an astonishing culture.

"Well, I'm a lawyer, I help them litigate contested accounts. How about you? What branch do you work in?"

"I'm in the air force"

calorie deficit

fuck

I ran out of steam in the middle of BJJ yesterday. It was absolutely one of those luffy-exhausted moments. The bell rings, I fall to my knees, and I look up and realize I spent 30~ seconds sucking in wind. This is one of those things where I hate dieting not only because it doesn't feel good to be hungry, but because it also restricts my ability to do my favorite thing.

I wish Victoria 3 had fortifications so that I could roleplay a 100 years early Enver Hoxha and spend half my country's gdp on bunkers so that when the British eventually come, they never leave alive

There's a certain type of guy in technical roles that won't shut the fuck up about soft skills. And they're important but in career advice stuff they'll somehow overemphasize it in discussions specific to hard skills. It's like weirdly pick me behaviour. Like you want your dumbass business school manager to like you so much you make communicating with nontechnical stakeholders your whole personality. Kinda exhausting. They always try to sound like they're onto some kind of deep truth and they're just parroting the brochures universities give to their first year STEM students.

They ruined the outdoor mall thingy, arrangement of close strip malls near where I am, chat. What used to be a set of sort of manilla, beige buildings with maroon roofing and stuff has become a series of uniform grey bricks. It's awful, and staring at the uniform grey brick big-chain stores with a crane looming in the background over them under grey overcast skies is like... brutalism? this is why they said Soviet Union Bad right?

Lol if it's true that Putin is funding Tim Pool and Dave Rubin, I think it's probably half propaganda and half that Putin is just kind of a dumb chud at heart.

nice feeling revisiting an old creative work i'd sort of lite-disowned to discover i actually like it a comparable amount to my follow-up works. it's just a bit different - less mean and softer on/more affectionate toward its characters, a touch sentimental despite the darker themes. less hopeless than my subsequent projects. guess i'm revisiting it in a more bittersweet headspace than i had been in, which is informing things.

Holy fuck that was creepy.

It's been raining on and off and I just experienced the weirdest thunder ever. It wasn't super-loud. In fact it wasn't particularly loud but I felt it. My computer desk as a slide-out thing for my keyboard and I was typing at the time and I felt the vibration in my fingers and hands and on my wrists because they rest on shelf.

Okay so I was delivering packages in probably the 2nd richest neighborhood I currently work in and this guy comes out while I'm fussing with my work phone and in like three sentences back and forth is talking about how he knows a guy who might be able to get me an IT job. So today I text him and send over a resume. He sends me the phone number of a guy but then starts pitching me HARD on working for him in financial services.
