Oh my fucking god I just wanted to say how otherworldly bad music is right now (pop has always been stupid to varying levels but oh my fucking god they have raised the stakes). I just listened to a bunch of pop tracks from various genres and I literally think I'm about to die. Rock, country, indie, folk, hipster white rap, whatever you call home, is aggressively bad. It's like Walmart made a gun that can shoot cum and blood and piss and shit and puke into your soul. We are so fucking fucked. I want to saw my own head off.

Revisiting this after sleeping more and yeah, sorry for the temp lock. I see people in my inbox saying to keep it up, so keep it up we will.

Boomer ass take and I'm nearly 40 lol

You: despairing that the top 5 tracks on Spotify are soulless garbage wojak-nooo

Me: clicking random folders on random soulseek accounts and finding nothing but bangers chad

When I see this I chuckle. You're your parents now. 'music was only good in my generation.'

Musics always been good and inventive if you look deep enough. They had king crimson, we had mars volta, and the kids have closures in Moscow. They had a tribe called quest, we had little brother, and the kids have Costa contra. Don't be stagnant.

[-] Yor@hexbear.net 44 points 1 week ago

lol no? there's good music coming out all the time. you're just out of touch

[-] Moss@hexbear.net 43 points 1 week ago

Every single generation has reached the age where they say "music was better in my day" and they're always wrong.

Chappel Roan is the best thing to happen to pop music since ABBA

Chappell Roan is the best thing to happen to pop music since ABBA

Good take. We need Chappell emotes.

[-] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago

If I hear "Pink Pony Club" one more time in a bar this year, I am going to go nuts. Nothing wrong with Chappell Roan, but dear Lord that song has been over played.

So, did you want to say rap here but realize it could come off wrong, so you said white rap instead? OR did you not realize you can listen to nonwhite rappers? Because it's got to be one of those, right?

You know there's other music than pop right? This is on par with people proclaiming gaming is dead after buying whatever the latest gaming fad shit and conveniently ignoring anything else

[-] macabrett@lemmy.ml 29 points 1 week ago

I've been listening to a lot of good music this year, no idea what you're going on about.

[-] lil_tank@hexbear.net 26 points 1 week ago

To stop being an elitist about music is probably the one thing that made me closer to inner peace and open to other humans

One day I realised that most of what I used to hate was what people who were less privileged than me enjoyed

Now I agree that there is a mentally destructive Kulturindustrie that robs the people of their popular musical practices by commodifying it.

But it's also important to realise that most traditional non-commodified music wasn't some advanced shit either and was very much looked down upon by the ruling classes before becoming cool and authentic

Thank u for recognizing that and restoring the post. It is inoffensive and does not violate the CoC, and mods using their permissions to dictate that the site can only be used as defined by the caprice of the mods is exactly why everyone has been pissed at mods recently.

Also, wow, the CoC is very well written and should be quoted and cited way more. We could have really saved a lot of struggle, both from users, mods, and admins, if everyone adhered to: if this site is not fun for you right now, log off and come back later.

Music has never been better. There's so much out there. If you're intentionally poisoning yourself with things you don't like like, that's sort of on you.

This is as wrong as a take ever has been. More novel, vibrant, gorgeous, complex and engaging music is being produced today than at any time in history.

Banal, commercial pop music was inescapable throughout all decades of the last century. The classics of bygone eras are remembered in finite lists only as the uncountable middling efforts of thousands of shit acts fade from view. This is true of all art and media.

If you want to find current music that speaks to you, put in the effort. I mean that in an encouraging sense really, and don't want to dismiss your post out of hand.

In | that | spirit | of | encouragement | and | discovery | here | are | 31 | releases | from | the | last | decade | covering | a | wide | range | of | genres | many | of | which | have | enjoyed | critical | acclaim | and | commercial | success.

[-] ObamaSama@hexbear.net 20 points 1 week ago

Listen to literally anything but top 40 then? I have almost exclusively listened to whacky obscure shit on soundcloud for the past decade, there’s so much creative and fun stuff dropping every single day. There are so many vibrant and unique scenes across the world, kinda wild to limit yourself to the most popular American stuff. You can absolutely find something you vibe with, just takes a modicum of effort to find things that aren’t heavily marketed and constantly shoved in your face. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and drop any preconceptions of what music “should” be and you’ll have a much better time dubois-dance

"I listened to many songs from a genre of music I don't like, so clearly nobody is making good music. I'm so edgy!"

The cure for this condition known as RBS (Rick Beato syndrome) is to let your playlist be dictated by the Transfem Soviet. Proletarian banjo music, modular generative ambient played by actual mushrooms and bouncy frenchcore remixes of lesbian singer-songwriter pop will heal your soul, turn you into a screaming opossum, or both. Anything else is counter-revolutionary and literally transphobic.

It goes both ways, mainstream music has achieved the production rate to pump out so much shit that it can overshadow everything, but at the same time access to instruments and recording software and music repositories has improved too so really small musicians are putting out gems out there that can hardly be found, but they still exist

This take sounds like someone who listens to video game soundtracks exclusively.

Just saying it's one of the takes of all time.

There's more music in the world than you can listen to in your lifetime.

https://youtu.be/itRWssMSuvw (fun and talented "pop" band)

https://youtu.be/KaNHvkeQ2wE (same people different day of the week)

https://youtu.be/ggE3OwlPIYc (just a good atmospheric black metal band with a PoC front man and it's just better than other black metal imo)

https://youtu.be/47XlUL6sRow (radio friendly jazz band and mercury award winners)

Try harder lmao, those are 4 random bands my bf showed me in the last month alone and none of them are basic/slop/mid/manufactured garbage. Just people venting themselves into sound and it's so good.

Stop being a grump

Some of my favorite artists/bands released best albums ever in the last few years after being completely mid (relative to themselves) for the last decade or so

Yeah, when King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard is releasing new music, or when Godspeed you! Black Emperor has a new banger of an album calling attention to the genocide, you can't just say "there's no good music around"

Bad music wil always exist but the cheap and easy stuff is what makes profit and gets pushed by record labels. Stop looking there.

Theres not like 100 years of recorded music one could sift through at any moment. Or the insane amount of content on Soundcloud or Bandcamp. Or have an experience in meat world seeing live music.

As someone who can play music professionally, I think most people who have this criticism suffer from music illiteracy. Like in a world where art isnt a priority, maybe do some self-crit that maybe your ears arent that experienced, that you have a limited listening palette and you don't know as much as you think you do. Then ask why is this so? Like corporate slop has definitely shaped the musical landscape and has poisoned anyones mind who has partaked but why haven't you ventured much further?

[-] frauddogg@hexbear.net 16 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Man some of the takes in this thread got me feelin like it's two types of people: people who claim they 'listen to a little bit of everything' when that 'little bit of everything' is 31 radio-approved, Top-40 flavors of Post Malone, Aubrey Graham, Taylor Swift, and Billie Eilish; and people who actually go looking for and listen to acts that aren't either white or gentrified

That and that one oldhead who apparently hasn't engaged with music since they were still pressin vinyls; man, don't you have 8-track tapes to be wheeling back up? Be kind, rewind headass i-cant

I'll go one further, mainstream pop and the top streamed music right now - literally the most mainstream of the mainstream - goes hard. looking at Spotify top charts for the week, I'm seeing BIRDS OF A FEATHER by Billie Eilish and Taste by Sabrina Carpenter, which are two very good high-production mainstream pop songs. better than I ever remember pop being in the rest of my life. brat came out this summer. Tyler the Creator just dropped CHROMAKOPIA. and slightly off mainstream but still very popular were Camila Cabello, Remi Wolf, Magdalena Bay, honestly this is like the best I imagine pop music has been in decades. what's the issue?

debord-tired

Capitalism is destroying music (and all of the arts) and it is only going to get harder to find good music. Just wait until they start pumping out AI songs that get played everywhere you go

[-] TerribleHands@hexbear.net 20 points 1 week ago
