I’ve had my switch since 2018 and it runs like absolute shit on most games now. I was initially opposed to the arguments that the switch - at launch - was a 5yo android tablet with cheap parts, but now (and after having gone through two sets of fuckin’ joycons), I can’t disagree. Really frustrating when I can easily power up my original N64 that once fell down two flights of stairs and works flawlessly
similar aesthetics but with a larger screen and Joy-Cons
TBF, doing the same thing a second time but better is not Nintendo’s MO. Theres usually either a new gimmick or form factor, or it’s just a refresh of equivalent hardware. The New 3DS was an outlier in that respect.
While they do like to mix things up on occasion they have there fair share of consoles that feel like iterations on a theme.
- NES>SNES
- N64>GameCube
- GB>GBA
- DS>3DS
With official announcements of a Switch successor including continuing software compatibility it seemed likely that it would keep the general form factor.
N64 -> GCN is a stretch to me, but Wii -> WiiU isn't
Branding aside, the GameCube had:
- four controller sockets built into the console
- a media format with much lower capacity than the competition
- a controller with one primary thumbstick and two primary face buttons.
These feel like vestigial N64 features
Edit: and three shoulder/trigger buttons!
Okay, actually now that you bring all that up, yeah! The controller is very different looking but functionally, even the C stick/C buttons are similar
Mayyybe.
IMO what sets the GameCube apart from anything else is its controller. Those asymetric buttons are unlike anything, including N64. Plus the weird analogic triggers.
With the ds it was even more.
DS->DS Lite>DSi->3DS->2DS->New 3DS/2DS
I feel like they meant to make this their switch pro, but the parts shortages probably meant they had to delay much longer than they liked. So as a result, I think they decided to make it a successor instead?
Though I wonder what the hardware is like?
Same design as the leak a couple months ago. Idk I love my switch, but that's really only because of some of the games. If my gaming laptop hadn't died on me I'd be emulating. I have a feeling this console will be similar.
Frankly I just hope the hardware is moderately higher spec than the switch. Can barely even play Minecraft on it because it runs like shit (though that's like 40% Mojang's fault bc Minecraft doesn't really run well on anything)
Please don’t support Nintendo. They have been super aggressive with lawsuits. They should go after people doing illegal things, but the palworld stuff and dmca people streaming games is pretty bad.
As long as Nintendo continues to support a physical format, I'm going to buy a Switch 2 and games for it. You're free to make a personal decision about whether to support a company or not; everyone has to make their own purchasing decisions based on their values and priorities. I don't support many companies that you probably do support, some that you may not even give a second thought to. Palworld, for me, doesn't rank.
I guess we've lost this battle, but down vote is not for disagreement. This comment provides an on-topic opinion and suggestion in a polite way, without any hate speech or trying to start a flame war.
It was never a winnable war. It's something that is completely unenforceable and will always be up to the individual. It would be wise to accept that votes will always be arbitrary and capricious.
The good news is that on Lemmy, they don't matter.
No company is perfect. The only thing bad enough to boycott here is modern Pokemon games, until those devs learn how to code properly.
Seems they learnt a fair bit by the time they did Scarlet/Violet or were there problems with those as well?
SV was the worst yet. It runs like a N64
Feels like they were going for more pokemon on screen rather than high framerates to me, but the days of hyper optimisation like we saw on the PS2/PS3 are gone for most companies.
Eh? Where's the line exactly? I'd much sooner boycott a company because they're causing genuine damage with ridiculous lawsuits, than because they make bad games.
dmca people streaming games is pretty bad.
I agree but technically they are in the right. Technically game streaming is likely illegal and breaks copyright. It's commonly accepted and often encouraged by most companies though.
Nah. Not in the Palworld thing. They applied for those patents after Palworld was already being produced and sold as an excuse to sue the company and the fact that the law allows this is bogus. That being said, boycott if you want, or don't. That's your business.
I didn't comment on the palworld thing.
You responded to a comment directly about the Palworld thing.
I directly cited the portion to which I replied too.
That's fair.
I'm buying a launch console to not play for future hacks for ~~piracy~~ Linux ISOs. Considering they sell consoles at a loss, this is even more effective
That works be my only consideration. First batch consoles are typically the ones that get hacked first.
Consoles are not universally sold at a loss. Among the notable exceptions is the Nintendo Switch...
What? It isn't about that at all.
It is about then filing a patent in 2021 for "aiming and throwing an item to capture a character". Something that had been done in RPGs for decades. And they bribed enough officials in Japan to get it approved 1 month before palworld came out.
Then they used the full might of Nintendo legal bribery and lawyers to try to crush indie developers that dare make their "style" of game (which they have been floundering for a decade) better than they do.
Not to mention that they use threats to shut down completely legal emulation software that they themselves steal and use after refusing to preserve old games themselves.
