Anarchism is a social movement that seeks liberation from oppressive systems of control including but not limited to the state, capitalism, racism, sexism, speciesism, and religion. Anarchists advocate a self-managed, classless, stateless society without borders, bosses, or rulers where everyone takes collective responsibility for the health and prosperity of themselves and the environment.

Fumiko Kaneko sits on her knees wearing a striped kimono with her hands clasped in front of her, staring intently ahead. c. 1925, author unknown [Wikipedia]

Fumiko Kaneko, born on this day in 1903, was a Japanese anarchist, nihilist, and opponent to Japanese imperialism in Korea. Fumiko is perhaps best remembered for her "The Prison Memoirs Of A Japanese Woman", written while imprisoned after being convicted of high treason against the Japanese government.

Together, Fumiko and her Korean partner Pak Yol published two magazines which highlighted the problems Koreans faced under Japanese imperialism and showed influences of their radical politics. Sometime between 1922 and 1923, they also established a group called "F"utei-sha (Society of Malcontents)", which Fumiko identified as a group for direct action against the government.

These activities soon brought Pak and Fumiko under government scrutiny. In September 1923, the Japanese government therefore made a number of arrests, mostly Koreans, on limited evidence, and among those arrested were Pak and Fumiko.

After lengthy judicial proceedings, Fumiko and Pak were convicted of high treason for attempting to obtain bombs with the intention of killing the emperor or his son. They were both sentenced to life in prison, however Fumiko allegedly committed suicide in her cell in 1926.

Here is a short excerpt from one of Fumiko's interrogations while imprisoned (text by Max Res from theanarchistlibrary.org):

Q: Your class?

A: A divine commoner.

Q: How are you employed?

A: My job is tearing down everything that currently exists.

Are there any Invidious instances that still work? None of the suggestions of HexReplyBot still work: yewtu.be is blocked by YouTube, inv.nadeko.net is blocked by YouTube, yt.artemislena.eu is being shut down, piped.video requires JavaScript and then is stuck at a loading screen forever.

Weird thing I do, but I can’t help but wonder if it’s effective agitprop.

I hate to admit it but I have a reddit-logo account and on it, I’m on my best behavior. Here on hexbear I’m more honest with my opinions and I’m not afraid of sounding sanctimonious. But on reddit my whole ‘strategy’ is to just be a guy and use reddit like a normal person. I join both political and non-political subreddits and whenever anyone points out in a non-political sub “this guy’s a woke sjw commie!”. I’ll confirm I am but let’s not get into it on this subreddit. If they press maybe I’ll just ask “why are you bringing politics into this?”

while i recently posted in my past life about how LOTR is inaccurately seen as gay (which would be fine) just because men are physically affectionate with & supportive of one another in a way that toxic masculinity has squeezed out of us, on the subject of another classic old tome Ishmael and Queequeg are legit gay and boyfriends (and im happy for them)

also @GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net i did as you suggested and picked up LOTR the book, but im also sorta still tryna read Moby Dick and will probably have to read theory on a deadline as part of my organizing life soon stalin-stressed what have i done? is this further evidcence i need to get on adhd medication?????

Hottest 100 won by a seppo pop star (again) and dominated by seppo pop stars (again). Triple j became a pop station so slowly I didn’t even notice. Zoomers really ran the hottest 100 into the ground lol. Bad stuff used to win back in the day of course, but at least there were a lot of bands and local artists. Now it’s all just queerbait American pop divas 🥱

One of my lib friends is getting on the libsky trend. As much as I don't care for that site in general, I do sort of want to be able to bridge over to libsky and my current instance blocks bluesky bridging (understandably). I would like to stay on a leftist/activist sort of instance, but every single "leftist" instance inevitably has a "no tankie" rule...

Is there a good instance that is federated with bsky.brid.gy and isn't "anti-tankie" or should I just suck it up and move to mstdn.social or another generalist instance for now? Or maybe just make a fresh account for dealing with the normies

Colombia refused to accept military deportation flights from the United States, setting off a furious reaction from President Trump, who on Sunday announced a barrage of tariffs and sanctions targeting the country, which has long been a top U.S. ally in Latin America.

Hilarious to watch the US isolate itself further, this could easily turn into an oil emergency or at least Karen yelling about $20 covefefe

I might not be able to find more cool stuff due to work, but I truly want to share everything I found with the world somehow. I even dreamt that I talked about ZeroRanger with a coworker and that I agitated to all of my coworkers about communism. I want to express myself without fearing that neurotypicals will find me weird but I don't know how.

Pal at work is trying to figure out the finer details of a DnD plot where some wizard wants to fake being a vampire. He doesn't know why, I think he's just working backwards from the encounter. He approaches writing very different than me and we've figured out how to make a guy seem like he's trying to conceal that he's a vampire in order to seem like a vampire, but why the hell this guy is doing it in the first place is just not there. Any ideas? They can be dumb as hell. I don't know the dnd world at all and generally bring irl mideval history/knowing more folklore and shit to the table to flesh ideas out. Anyway, evil wizard who wants people to think he's a vampire pretending not to be, why would anyone do this?

I'm still a bit sick but I'm feeling better thankfully (as in, I am actually visiting places again). I'm a fair bit disappointed that I basically spent most of my time in Kunming in a hotel room feeling awful, of course. But at least now that seems over (and at least it was less bad than my illness in St Petersburg last summer [why do I always get ill on trips?]). Or maybe I'm just overly hopeful, since now that I think about it this morning started with my symptoms getting worse than the previous days, before dying down a few hours later (but maybe that's also lack of sleep).

And I took the train to Laos today, so this is the second socialist country I've ever visited. First impressions: maybe it's just Luang Prabang, but holy shit there are so many westerners (at least the city still seems more chill than other tourist-invested spaces in other countries); it's very funny hearing so many French people after basically not hearing a single one in my 15 days in China. Also I didn't expect to see that many buddhist temples so close by and each filled with monks singing; that was neat. The natural scenery is pretty beautiful from what I've seen from the train window.

also I've realised I haven't sent pictures from Guilin (I was there before Kunming), so here are a few
