Welcome to lemmy :3

A few tips:

  1. If you're coming from Reddit know karma here isn't a thing and nobody really cares how many likes you get
  2. If you want a great mobile client I reccomend Thunder
  3. You will see a lot of Linux users and Queer people (with overlap), also expect to see a lot of :3
  4. Unless you set up filters in the settings except to see a lot of political content
  5. If you want some memes I reccomend !memes@lemmy.world and !onehundredninetysix@lemmy.blahaj.zone
  6. If you just want to post cat pictures feel free :3

What does NSFW stand for? Nudes Sex Fun Wanking? Is switching on cause explicit content to show up or block it?

[–] Gloomy@mander.xyz 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Not Safe For Work, mostly nudity, sometimes violence.

I don't know where you are doing the switching on or off part.

I do this over my app (Boost), where I have to turn it on (show NSFW content) to see it.

[–] Ludrol@szmer.info 2 points 2 days ago

NSFW also includes spoilers for now, as Lemmy devs don't care about spoilers. (They will come with post tags sometime in the future.) (This is similar to mastodon but they named it "content warning")

[–] daveB@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I downloaded the Lemmy Voyager app for iOS and there is a toggle switch for this item.

The term “not safe for work” reminds me of an episode of “I think you should leave” on Netflix

Just like Reddit, depending on the instance you join Lemmy allows for pornographic & gore content to be posted.

I would suggest logging into your instance, in this case for you it’s https://sh.itjust.works/, and navigate to your profile to turn NSFW content off.

Great, thanks for the help

Alright I'm gonna need you to buy an older ThinkPad and then install Arch Linux on it. Then I need you to set some anime background, preferably uncomfortable close to hentai if possible. Then I'm going to need you to get some thigh high socks and put those on. Put your legs up on the desk and take a picture. Make sure something like neofetch is running, so people know you use Arch BTW.

Once you have done that, head on over to /c/unixsocks@lemmy.blahaj.zone and make a post.

If you could do that, that would be great

Welcome to Lemmy! Have fun and be active, everyone appreciates it.

[–] daveB@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 days ago

I was using Instagram and threads mostly but was wanting to stop using Meta based apps. Someone posted about the fediverse so I started using mastodon and Pixelfed.

This is supposed to be a Reddit replacement is what some people said but I didn’t really use that before

[–] jeena@piefed.jeena.net 33 points 4 days ago

What did you use before and how did you find Lemmy?

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 28 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

I was about to go have a nap, as it's waaaay too early for me on a Saturday, but I just wanted to wish you welcome, and I hope you enjoy your stay.

PS: The community you're posting this on may not be the correct place for this, as it's more oriented towards things regarding the sh.itjust.works instance, but I don't think it matters too much.

[–] daveB@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Ya I wasn’t sure which one to pick, this server said it was solar powered I think so I thought that was cool. It popped up with a list of a few to pick from. I’m on Vancouver Island and am exploring the Fediverse apps. I’m enjoying Pixelfed so far.

solar powered

Hydroelectric, I believe.

Jalapeño Kettle Chips, Pringles, La Cocina Tortilla Chips, Covered Bridge Weekender Potato Chips

[–] verity_kindle@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 days ago

Hey Dave, I like how our little niche communities are all connected to each other, it's like a prairie dog town. You can pop your head up anywhere and meet other little dogs! Glad you popped up here! IMHO, this instance is the most welcoming, when you're new to an interest group/niche, shitizens reach out and explain how federation works, lore, etc. Big hearts.

Welcome! I came here from reddit about a year and a half ago and never looked back. I hope you find Lemmy flexible and real and we meet your needs. :)

[–] Jiggle_Physics@sh.itjust.works 7 points 3 days ago (10 children)

The only thing I miss about reddit are the large, academic subject specific subs, that tightly moderate their subs to make sure that as many of the posts/answers are from accredited people, or that the post seems to check out when they look the subject up. r/askhistorians for example.

[–] secret300 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yeah it's weird that the smartest communities are too dumb to leave reddit

[–] Jiggle_Physics@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I think it is less that, and more that establishing a large enough body of experts requires a very large audience to pull from, and on top of that it took years, and lots of work, to get them established, and working correctly, so it will be very difficult to move.

[–] secret300 3 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It's pretty 1 to 1. Doesn't seem that hard at all

It isn't though. The mod tools for lemmy are super primitive compared to the moderation tool suites that exist for reddit. These subs live because they have these in-depth mod tools. Tight, on point, moderation is key to keeping these places one topic, and of quality. Also, we don't have the user base. While I guarantee there are a decent amount of subject experts on lemmy, I have seen them myself, you need enough to be posting/dealing with posts multiple times a day, in any given subject. So, not only do you have to have a body of expertise large enough to cover the topics, and rate of posts, you have to keep in mind these people also have to want to do this. Most people like that don't want to add that amount of extra work, and stress, to their lives.

[–] lagoon8622@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Well but also I miss like r/gme_meltdown too. And the sportsball stuff but I know most don't care about that around here

Unfortunately I stopped going to reddit for sports info before I left. I just kept running into increasingly toxic people, over what is such a low stakes subject. It wasn't just reddit, I also gave up on televised sports because watching sports feels like I am watching ads that are occasionally broken up by bumps of sports. Even friends who are WAY more into sports have pretty much given up on watching them. Also, the way that sports is handled across streaming platforms I find enraging.
