On Friday is May 9th, which is the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, which Russia, among other places, celebrates as the day when the Soviets defeated the Nazis. Naturally, one of the current hotspots of fascism in the world today, Ukraine, is essentially threatening that they might strike Russia or even Moscow itself during that timeframe. Any such strike would almost certainly be symbolic and not aimed at anything too important, as I doubt even Zelensky and his American handlers would actually want to kill a world leader, not least somebody like Xi Jinping. But I would not be surprised if they tried something nonetheless, if only to disrupt the event in some way and not actually kill anybody.

And, as we're on this topic, @EllenKelly@hexbear.net has reminded me that Tuesday is the anniversary of the Nazis burning the Institut für Sexualwissenschaf in 1933, an early institute advocating for the rights of LGBT people, and which also provided early forms of gender-affirming surgeries, as well as hormone therapies. We are currently seeing a crackdown on LGBT rights throughout swathes of the imperial core (as well as countries in the periphery, to the extent that those rights existed there already), and this Nazi-inspired movement will be similarly defeated in the future.

The U.S. says it has reached a 'historic agreement' canceling almost all reciprocal tariffs with China These 'reciprocal tariffs' did not exist before Trump got into power. Once again, he got rid of a problem he created in the first place.

Denmark Summons U.S. Envoy Over Espionage Targeting Greenland - Telesur English

Article

Intelligence agencies have been identifying individuals who align with U.S. strategic interests. On Thursday, Denmark’s Foreign Affairs Ministry summoned the acting U.S. ambassador for a meeting on Thursday over media reports suggesting an escalation of U.S. intelligence operations in Greenland.

The meeting with U.S. Acting Ambassador to Denmark Jennifer Hall Godfrey was held in Copenhagen and included a representative from Greenland’s government. “The focus of the meeting was the article in the Wall Street Journal: U.S. Orders Intelligence Agencies to Step Up Spying on Greenland,” the ministry said in a statement.

The report, published on Tuesday, said that U.S. intelligence agencies have been directed to identify individuals in Greenland and Denmark who align with American strategic interests concerning the Arctic island, citing unnamed sources.

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen stressed that Denmark had expressed its concerns clearly to the U.S. “The purpose of the meeting was to make the Kingdom’s position completely clear. It is our impression that the acting ambassador took that seriously,” he said, adding that the meeting did not verify the article’s claims.

“I cannot disclose what was said during the conversation. The purpose of the meeting was to convey to the U.S. that we take what we read in the paper very seriously. I have not had the accuracy of it confirmed,” he said.

Greenlandic Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen strongly condemned the reported espionage activities. “Spying in Nuuk (the capital of Greenland) by the U.S. is completely unacceptable. It’s disrespectful to an ally and entirely abnormal,” Nielsen told Danish broadcaster DR.

Greenland, once a Danish colony, became an integral part of the Kingdom of Denmark in 1953. It was granted home rule in 1979, expanding its autonomy, although Denmark retains control over foreign affairs and defense.

squidward-chill Trump sells over $350 billion in weapons to 9/11 and ISIS funding Sauids which was then used to do genocidal war against Yemen, technically treason and definately impeachable

squidward-scream-point Trump potentially recieves a $400 million jet from Hamas negotiations moderator Qatar trying to end a genocide we're arming.

The president has made it no secret that he is tired of waiting for Boeing to produce a new Air Force One to replace the current planes, two modified 747-200 jumbo jets known by the model number VC-25A, which date from 1990.

In February, he said he was “not happy” with the slow progress and cost overruns on the new presidential aircraft, which were ordered in 2018, during his first term.

....

“The possible transfer of an aircraft for temporary use as Air Force One is currently under consideration between Qatar’s Ministry of Defense and the U.S. Department of Defense,” the statement said. “But the matter remains under review by the respective legal departments, and no decision has been made.”

Trump Reaches a Trade Deal With the United Kingdom - Telesur English

Article

Britain will expand market access for U.S. products such as beef, ethanol and some industrial goods. On Thursday, President Donald Trump announced that the United States and Britain had reached a new trade agreement, which includes partially rolling back tariffs in certain sectors and further expanding market access for each other’s products.

“The final details are being written up in the coming weeks,” Trump said at the White House Oval Office. Meanwhile, the 10 percent reciprocal tariff previously imposed by the U.S. remains in place. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer did not attend the event in person but delivered a speech remotely via phone.

Under the deal, the first 100,000 vehicles imported into the U.S. from Britain each year are subject to the “reciprocal rate” of 10 percent and any additional vehicles each year are subject to 25 percent rates.

U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that 100,000 vehicles only accounted 0.6 percent of U.S. auto market. But according to a statement from the British government, a quota of 100,000 cars is “almost the total” the Britain exported last year.

Britain will reduce or eliminate non-tariff barriers and expand market access for U.S. products such as beef, ethanol and some industrial goods. Lutnick also noted that Rolls-Royce engines and aircraft components from Britain will enter the U.S. tariff-free, while Britain will purchase US$10 billion worth of Boeing aircraft. The British government didn’t mention this part in its statement.

The White House also announced that this deal creates “a new trading union” for steel and aluminum. The statement from the British government said that tariffs on British steel exports to the United States will be removed.

“In a win for both nations, we have agreed new reciprocal market access on beef,” the statement read. “We will also remove the tariff on ethanol — which is widely used in our manufacturing sector — coming into the UK from the U.S., down to zero.”

Miriam Adelson, widow of Sheldon Adelson.

[–] miz@hexbear.net 27 points 1 day ago (2 children)

WILL: By the way, Bret Stephens was once on stage at a synagogue in New York City at some big sponsored event, uh, I forget... probably some institution that he works for as a fellow for, where they interviewed Sheldon Adelson on stage, and Sheldon Adelson said— on stage— that we should preemptively nuke Iran! They said like "well, wouldn't that be a massive war crime?"— of course Bret Stephens didn't say that, he clammed up real fucking quick. He didn't say shit... and Sheldon Adelson said "well, just bomb the desert as a warning. No one lives there."

FELIX: <laughing> Oh my god, what a great country.

MATT: There's nothing like a warning shot of massive radiation just going into your fucking town.

WILL: Stephens sat there like a mute and said nothing, because guess what— he agrees with him!

MATT: Of course. The only thing that's good about Sheldon Adelson and his horrible influence on politics, is that— when I want to feel better about how horrible everything is, I just think back to 2016, and I just think of how many sponge baths Ted Cruz gave him. Thinking the whole time, "it's worth it, you're gonna be president." Getting under the crevices, getting under the tit meat, thinking "it's gonna be ok, you're gonna be president". Going under those gargoyle-taloned feet of his, going between each one with the sponge, and thinking "you're gonna be president, this is all gonna be fine when you're taking that fucking oath of office."

FELIX: Don't you love when you're giving Sheldon Adelson a bath and like a— you know, make sort of an oval between your index finger and your thumb— uhh, a flake of skin that size comes off, and his wife looks at you, and without saying anything you know that she wants you to eat it like a chip?

MATT: Just the moment when you're spit-shining a mole the size of a hubcap, and thinking about being president.

FELIX: I love when you're washing his big mole and you scrub hard enough that you see eyes and a mouth come out, and it looks at you and it says "Jerusalem is the capital."

– Progress has been made on allowing aid into Gaza, securing a two-phase prisoner exchange deal, and reaching a ceasefire.

– The movement’s leadership has been holding direct talks for several days with official US envoys in Doha.

– The talks have covered a 70-day renewable truce in exchange for the release of 10 living Israeli captives.

– Discussions have also addressed US guarantees to prevent Israel from resuming military operations.“

Could be just bluster and false promises, but Trump loves a deal he can say he got done.

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 42 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Trump might be a monster, but he's also not oblivious to the terrible return on investment Israel is becoming. Netanyahu is desperate for a war with Iran, something Trump knows won't be popular for him OR successful, having seen what the Houthis can do with a fraction of Iranian firepower to hand. He even went as far as to exclude some of the hawkish members of his inner circle when they insisted in military action.

I think there is a side of him that does see this "Trump Gaza" thing earnestly, but also a side that is realising how much the GOP (and Democrats to many ends) have been trying to instigate a hot war in west asia. Or maybe he's just got one of the sensible aides in his ear this week.

Either way, strategically it makes sense for the US to push for peace in Gaza and Ukraine, not because it wants peace for its own sake or cares for the civilians in these regions, but because the empire is losing and bleeding the longer it fights on a dozen fronts unnecessarily. Kissinger, hell rest his soul, would have equally argued the same if he were alive and influential in the government - despite his evil, he knew when to back down and prioritize the empire above all else.

[–] CascadeOfLight@hexbear.net 48 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm glad Kissinger lived long enough to suffer Zelensky scolding him for not being bloodthirsty enough.

Imagine watching your successors fuck up the empire you spent your long, ghoulish life building, and then when you finally try to warn them that they're making a mistake, some upjumped little comprador cockroach, the kind you used to be able to have killed and replaced with a single phone call, gives you a public browbeating about your lack of commitment. And then you die.

I'm curious what Trump actually feels about a war with Iran. On the one hand, he's basically the only candidate last election that made war sound bad and he loves a good deal. On the other hand, he appointed John Bolton, killed that one beloved general his first term, ended the nuclear deal, and even now keeps putting military equipment in that area and surrounding himself with neocons who would love a war with Iran (like Rubio). I feel like he still leans towards pro war with Iran in the end.

[–] Lemmygradwontallowme@hexbear.net 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

countdown until he returns back to the original ghoulish bipartisan plan and not much than that happens.

At least we'll say it was good when it lasted

The Ukrainian military has been briefing units on a new Russian cruise missile called "Banderol" (Parcel). Slavyangrad on telegram posted the following:

The Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has disseminated information about the new Russian small-sized aircraft cruise missile S8000 "Banderol", the episodic use of which has been noted by the Ukrainian side since the beginning of this year. According to the GUR, the developer and manufacturer of the missile is JSC "Kronshtadt", and the missile is used from the UAV "Orion" ("Inohodets") produced by the same JSC "Kronshtadt", and in the future it is also planned to use this missile from combat helicopters Mi-28N.

According to known data, the S8000 "Banderol" cruise missile was first publicly demonstrated during a visit by Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev to the Kapustin Yar test site in the Astrakhan region on April 26, 2025.

Apparently, limiting the use of the new missile only from low-speed carriers (UAVs and helicopters) allows for low cost and simplicity of design, not designed for significant overloads.

According to the GUR, the S8000 "Banderol" cruise missile has a fuselage about 5 m long with stealth elements. The retractable wing has a span of 2.2 m. The missile is equipped with a small-sized (weight only 8.5 kg) SW800Pro-A95 turbojet engine with a thrust of 80 kg produced by the Chinese company Swiwin Turbine & Jets. The fuel reserve is estimated at 50-65 kg, which provides a flight range of up to 500 km. The cruising speed of the missile is 520-560 km / h, the maximum speed is 620-650 km / h.

The Banderol missile, according to Ukrainian data, is equipped with a 115-kg OFBCh-150 high-explosive fragmentation warhead, the explosive mass of which is 49.5 kg. The missile's satellite guidance system is based on the 8-channel GLONASS/GPS receiver Kometa-M8 manufactured by JSC VNIIR-Progress. According to the GUR, the missile widely uses imported electronic components.

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 19 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

The payload/warhead and cruising speed of the S8000 are all similar to the jet powered Shahed 238/Geran-3, a jet engined version of the Shahed 136/Geran-2. The key advantage of this new missile is low observability/stealth, and an air launch capability. The 238/Geran-3 has seen increased use this year, after the first battlefield tests last year. If this new S8000 missile sees widespread adoption, it would suggest that the cost benefit analysis of the 238/Geran-3 doesn't work out, if you're going to spend the money and effort on a jet powered cruise missile in this class, might as well go a little bit further and make it stealthy and give it air launch capabilitiy as well. The advantage of the Geran-3 is range, double that of the S8000, but in a Ukrainian context it doesn't make much sense, a Geran/Shahed target is not reaching Lviv often, jet powered or not.

Ultimately it's about delivering this payload, the 90-120kg warheads, effectively. Shahed 136/Geran-2 is all about quantity and low cost over quality, a bunch of cheap propeller driven drones to overwhelm missile (SAM) and gun (AA) based air defences, as it's highly vulnerable to both. Shahed 238/Geran-3 can evade AA gun defences from ground based systems and attack helicopters more effectively thanks to its jet propulsion, but it is still quite vulnerable to SAMs and missiles launched from fighter aircraft. While Ukraine is facing a shortage of specialised SAM systems like Patriot and S-300P/V, it still has plenty of various SAM systems to counter the Shahed/Geran threat, jet powered or not, and these systems are increasing in number. So Shahed 238/Geran-3 doesn't help there. So the Geran-3 might sit in a no man's land in the the quantity-quality-cost triangle. Which would explain S8000. A stealthy missile with an air launch from various unconventional platforms like attack helicopters and UAVs, designed to penetrate the air defence net more effectively, going for quality.

If S8000 works as advertised and if production numbers are high enough and costs reasonable (big if on all three) Ukraine would need specialist SAM systems to intercept designed to engage low radar cross section targets at low altitude, like one of their rare S-300V air defence systems. However, S8000 is not comparable to Kh-59/69, which are considerably faster, likely stealthier, have a 1000lb/450kg class warhead, and have terrain following guidance systems. But Russia don't have enough of these to fire in large volleys. The idea is that they can make enough S8000s then.

In a historic deal, Hamas agreed to release the zionist American captive and IOF soldier Edan Alexander, in unprecedented direct communications with the United States and with zero input from "israel."

The US is asking the zionist government to stop military activity, including drone flights, to secure Alexander's release, which is expected to take place on Tuesday.

Zionist media has not neglected to take notice of their absence from the agreement or the negotiations preceding it.

I don't agree with or back any of this administrations actions regarding Palestine. But the way Trump, Witkoff et all have been able to dog walk Israel and Netanyahu lays bare the fact that Israel is never in complete control of the US govt like people seem to believe. Biden could have gotten anything out of them he wanted and chose not to. Because he is a rabid Zionist war criminal and loves to see children genocided

[–] Sinisterium@hexbear.net 50 points 1 day ago

Israel would legit collapse if the us sanctioned and blockaded it. Even israhell itself still has a large marginalized Palestinian population inside its officially recognized borders.

[–] LoveYourself@hexbear.net 64 points 1 day ago

Regardless of whether this specific truce works out in the long-term: when Palestine is liberated, history will remember that it was the Yemenis, who were bombed relentlessly, subjected to heinous genocidal sanctions, and slandered as "antisemitic Islamist Iranian-backed Houthi militias", who remained as the foundational internationalist military support front which ultimately forced the United States empire to accept defeat.

Glory to the martyrs and God Bless the Palestinian resistance, the Palestinian people, and the entire Axis of Resistance. May the prisoners soon taste freedom God willing.

[–] duderium@hexbear.net 36 points 1 day ago (2 children)

This is obviously good news but a Palestinian friend of mine says trump is just doing this so he looks good during his upcoming trip to arab countries.

[–] KnownUnknownKnower@hexbear.net 41 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Trump only does anything to look strong/good. It’s how he gave up on bombing Yemen, and it’s how the Palestinians in Gaza may get a hint of breathing room.

[–] merthyr1831@lemmy.ml 23 points 1 day ago

It's possible that the goal is to push Lebanon and Saudi towards the Abraham accords and normalisation with Israel.

There are rumours that the Trump admin might "recognise Palestine" to achieve this, though it would likely exclude Hamas and resistance factions from any political power which would just entrench the status quo in the West Bank

Of course Israel would obviously lose out big time because a recognition of Palestine, even a neutered one under Abbas, would limit their international PR effort to justify the annexation of Palestinian territory. Despite this, it would further isolate Iran's efforts to expand its military and political influence in the region - Both by damaging Hezbollah's support, and by keeping the KSA from turning in favour of Iran.

People compared him to bernie, but Corbyn literally got arrested for fighting for palestian rights, long before many do now. History will remember him positively.

It seems like a second great left schism is happening in the west, as we saw with Die Linke and now Labour.

[–] Z_Poster365@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago

Never heard anyone on the commie and anti-imperialist left say too much bad about Corbyn. I’m sure he has issues but he’s an anomaly and different than Bernie, he moreso resembles a South American Democratic Socialist in the Pink Wave style. Explicitly anti-war and anti-Israel is rare to see in the west

Apparently Palantir UK is run by the eldest grandson of Oswald Mosley. I did not know this until this morning when he was live on the BBC shilling Palantir to millions of people.

It is no accident that Peter Thiel landed on Oswald Mosley's spawn as his man in the UK.

For those unaware, Mosley founded the British Union of Fascists and was the subject matter of the Battle of Cable Street

Edan Alexander, the last POW in Gaza with American citizenship, will be released by Hamas soon. Whilst officially this is being reported as a "good will gesture" from Hamas, it's very likely they made a backdoor deal with Trump's admin.

We know Hamas has been in talks with the US directly, having failed to get a deal with the Israelis, and we know Trump has evicted a few of the warhawks from his circles. The deal might involve some attempt to rein in Netanyahu for good before they spiral the region out of control.

Zelenskiy says he will meet Putin after Trump tells him not to await truce – Reuters

Article text

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said he would agree to meet Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin in Turkey on Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump told him immediately to accept Putin's proposal of direct talks.

The Ukrainian leader had responded guardedly earlier on Sunday after the Russian president, in a night-time televised statement that coincided with prime time in the U.S., proposed that Ukraine and Russia hold direct talks in Istanbul next Thursday, May 15.

It was not clear that Putin had proposed to attend in person, however.

"I will be waiting for Putin in Türkiye on Thursday. Personally. I hope that this time the Russians will not look for excuses," Zelenskiy wrote on X.

Putin's proposal came hours after major European powers demanded on Saturday in Kyiv that Putin agree to an unconditional 30-day ceasefire or face "massive" new sanctions, a position that Trump's Ukraine envoy Keith Kellogg endorsed on Sunday.

Zelenskiy too had said Ukraine would be ready for talks with Russia, but only after Moscow agreed to the 30-day ceasefire.

But Trump, who has the power to continue or sever Washington's crucial supply of arms to Ukraine, took a different line.

"President Putin of Russia doesn’t want to have a Cease Fire Agreement with Ukraine, but rather wants to meet on Thursday, in Turkey, to negotiate a possible end to the BLOODBATH. Ukraine should agree to this, IMMEDIATELY," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

"At least they will be able to determine whether or not a deal is possible, and if it is not, European leaders, and the U.S., will know where everything stands, and can proceed accordingly!"

Putin sent Russia's armed forces into Ukraine in February 2022, unleashing a conflict that has killed hundreds of thousands of soldiers and triggered the gravest confrontation between Russia and the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

With Russian forces grinding forward, the Kremlin chief has offered few, if any, concessions so far.

In his overnight address, he proposed what he said would be "direct negotiations without any preconditions".

But almost immediately, senior Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters the talks must take into account both an abandoned 2022 draft peace deal and the current situation on the ground.

This language is shorthand for Kyiv agreeing to permanent neutrality in return for a security guarantee and accepting that Russia controls swathes of Ukraine.

Putin also dismissed what he said was an attempt to lay down "ultimatums" in the form of Western European and Ukrainian demands for a ceasefire starting on Monday. His foreign ministry spelled out that talks about the root causes of the conflict must precede discussions of a ceasefire.

Trump, who says he wants to be remembered as a peacemaker and has repeatedly promised to end the war, earlier responded to Putin's address by saying that this could be "A potentially great day for Russia and Ukraine!".
