Breadtube if it didn't suck.

Post videos you genuinely enjoy and want to share, duh. Celebrate the diversity of interests shared by chapochatters by posting a deep dive into Venetian kelp farming, I dunno. Also media criticism, bite-sized versions of left-wing theory, all the stuff you expected. But I am curious about that kelp farming thing now that you mentioned it.

Low effort / spam videos might be removed, especially weeb content.

There is a cytube that you can paste videos into and watch with whoever happens to be around. It's open submission unless there's something important to commandeer it with at the time.

A weekly watch party happens every Saturday (Sunday down under), with video nominations Saturday-Monday, voting Monday-Thursday. See the pin for whatever stage it's currently in.

I had such a blast watching this video the yesterday. The USA is so utterly fucked in manufacturing capabilities in comparison to China that I'd say it's not even funny if it weren't hilarious. I was wheezing laughing when at the 37 minute mark it's revealed that the patently sinophobic choice of buying the chainmail in India instead of China was just a scam that made him pay even more because it was made in China anyway.

The Chinese destruction of the american manufacturing economy demonstrated through burger tool by an unaware yank: literally my dream come true.

[–] Homer_Simpson@hexbear.net 22 points 1 week ago

Chances are the US sources are screwing him over too.

[–] crazyminner@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 week ago

Yeah I was laughing the whole time too, its amazing,

I mean he has a point in that the US not having like, any basic Tool/Die ability is pretty bad (for the US), and fostering local ability isn't a bad idea.

But he clearly impregnates the rest of the video with anti-Chinese bullshit. Like, he couldn't find any US supply for the chain-mail, so he compromises and imports it - but going to great lengths specifically to avoid China. Then when he does find a supplier (in India), turns out they're just drop-shipping Chinese parts lmao.

And at one point he specifically mentions the CCP as some evil force.

The whole video kinda made my skin crawl I dunno. Dude makes some interesting videos but this one is kinda gross. It reads less "pro-local" and more "anti-Chinese"

[–] crazyminner@lemmy.ml 17 points 1 week ago

Yeah if it was a youtuber making this and it was a workers co-op or something and they just explained things it would be fine. The Sinophobia is cringe. Also exploiting workers is cringe.

Making a product paid for by your patrons only to then sell it for a profit while stealing wages from your workers... Super cringe.

This guys is based out of Hunstville, Alabama, and if you do anything STEM-adjacent there it’s for the military in some capacity. I’ve been around those types and the Sinophobia runs deep. It’s lame though, his videos could be a lot better if his worldview didn’t come through as much.

β€œFun” fact: the civic center in Huntsville is (still) named after Nazi scientist Wernher von Braun.

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

He's openly talked about his long career in engineering for the military, as of the last time I kept up with his channel (8 years ago maybe).

He'll go do humanitarian stuff like building orphanages in Peru and see absolutely no contradiction between that and his day job.

[–] TheaJo@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago

well there is at least one die casting ie uses dies factory I know of. but that's not much overall

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 35 points 1 week ago (6 children)

This guy weirds me out and I've never watched his videos. I just know him, Mark Rober, and Jerry Rig Everything seem close, and they all weird me the fuck out. Its not even something I can pinpoint exactly. Rober at least showed his ass when he did that Palmer Lucky colab for his automated killing systems.

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 38 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Jerry Rig Everything is a clean cut white guy from Utah so I assume he's an evil cultist (Mormon)

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 25 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Rober is also a Mormon. I think were on to something.

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 45 points 1 week ago (2 children)

After a little bit of checking, JerryRigEverything is a Mormon, Mark Rober is a Mormon, and SmarterEveryDay is a born again Christian.

The throughline is kkkristianity.

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 28 points 1 week ago

Shit no wonder they all seem creepy.

[–] kristina@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago

At least jerryrig sells cheap wheelchairs which yk it's wild to me that a cheap wheelchair is considered to be 1k. What's the Mormon angle on cornering the wheelchair industry tho

[–] Le_Wokisme@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago (2 children)

this guy did weapons research for the US navy

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Dude these guys are all weapons guys. Rober was a JPL guy if I recall. I wouldn't be shocked to learn JerryRigEverything was a bomb guy or some shit.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

JPL research doesn't end up in missile tech? I just assumed it did.

Edit: https://www.militarymuseum.org/JPL.html. ah that's how it started, but was transfer to NASA in the 50s.

[–] spectre@hexbear.net 4 points 1 week ago

Ah right an yeah like everything else I'm sure their robotics and other tech trickles over to defense uses to some extent or another, but I think it's a lot less direct than other space industry sectors like rocketry or whatever is implied by the name (as you saw).

I don't mind dinking on the guy but I want a clean dunk!

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago
[–] Homer_Simpson@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago

This guy is weirder than the rest, trust me.

[–] vovchik_ilich@hexbear.net 8 points 1 week ago

They're all Yankkkees

[–] SamotsvetyVIA@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago

they're all christian, and this dude makes his son call him "sir" lol

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Jerry rig everything does look like a default chud character but i think he is not that bad? He has posted pro-palestine stuff i think and anti-trump-elon stuff, so at worst he is a lib?

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 1 points 1 week ago

Yeah definitely a lib. Rober strikes me as a kind of pro-cop/pro-war lib too. Rober does kid videos though, and did a whole video on Anduril, framing it as a tool to "protect you from bad guys" but its primarily used on the border with Mexico.

I think all these guys do this. This video about making things in America is kind of the same thing. Maybe Jerry Rig Everything is different, but I don't watch a lot of his stuff.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 35 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Ok so I just got up to the chainmail part.

This video isn't a "i want to make something in america" video, it's a "i don't want to make something from china" video. They're quite content in using India's manufactured chainmail.

Seems pretty sus tbh.

[–] crazyminner@lemmy.ml 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah thats why I was like wtf, super sinophobic.

[–] CloutAtlas@hexbear.net 25 points 1 week ago

Thumbnail: Chinese flag vs American flag

Actual content: Anything but Chinese

Result: Chinese

Lol

[–] buckykat@hexbear.net 33 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Hey, this is that creep who makes his kids call him sir

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 14 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Uhg you have to have brain worms to want that from your kids. My kid was calling me sir out of nowhere maybe a year ago and I told her every time not to call me that. She thought it was funny though lol.

[–] bort@hexbear.net 9 points 1 week ago

She thought it was funny though lol.

I still call my dad 'Father' because it irritated him. Maybe I gotta try 'Sir' next time I see him?

[–] huf@hexbear.net 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

i'm not sure where the border lies inside the US, but there's a portion of the country where grown ass men call each other sir for no discernible reason. like, they cant just answer a yes or no question with a yes or no. it alwyas comes out as "yes sir" or "no sir"

I do this, but only for service workers

[–] MechaLenin@hexbear.net 26 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Afaik this guy used to work for a military contractor so do with that what you will

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 22 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There's a video where he interviews some higher up in the military about propaganda and the guy he's talking to explains that the video he's making is itself propaganda and the dipshit just soyfaces and goes "wow I never realized!" Classic engineering brain.

[–] bort@hexbear.net 19 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

It's that Soviet joke about American's not noticing propaganda, but here even the propagandists don't notice what they're doing.

I hate American exceptionalism but their brainwashing tech is truly world-class.

Can't believe the extremely Christian coded fella is also a racist???

It was funny watching him eat shit in the form of productive forces.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 23 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HE WANTS $75 FOR THIS THING AHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAA

deep breath

AHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAHAHAHA

BUY A NEW GRILL EVERY YEAR FOR 8 YEARS OR BUY THIS?

[–] crazyminner@lemmy.ml 19 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Only reason he is gunna sell any is because hes using his youtube channel to make them more popular than they should be.

Im gunna laugh so hard when the Chinese make a better cheaper version anyways.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah exactly, it's literally only going to sell because of who he is, not because of the product being competitive in the market.

I sincerely think he's not going to do well with this though. If it was half that price? Yeah people would buy it. But at this utterly absurd price people are going to look at it and go "nah".

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 1 points 1 week ago

It sold out, dont underestimate the stupidity of trumpanzees.

It looks like this already exists and costs 13 dollars lmao

[–] vovchik_ilich@hexbear.net 5 points 1 week ago

And it looks like ballz, clearly the superior version.

I also found the addition of the long handle a bit stupid. "Hey, we need to make a rough cleaning tool that requires quite a bit of pressure from the user due to the nature of cleaning burnt fat on a grill. Yeah, let's add a long handle to make the user have to exert a ton of leverage instead of using their body weight!". What you linked seems much more intelligent.

Oh and also ROFL at the little businesses in the US getting their IP stolen... THROUGH BLOODY AMAZON. Petit bourgeois in shambles when they discover that IP was only there for big corpos all this time.

[–] comrade_pibb@hexbear.net 11 points 1 week ago

Oh hey it's this stem hick

[–] Homer_Simpson@hexbear.net 7 points 1 week ago

It's a shame this guy is such a tool.

[–] ComradePenguin@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 week ago

The video was interesting, clearly American manufacturing is fucked πŸ˜‚ He had a couple of sinophobic moments for sure. I loved the part in which he got Chinese chainmail from "India". Not ordering it from China when he could not replace it was a revealing choice.

I get his mission, but it just so incredibly clearly shows how capitalism is a shitty system and that little "invest in local manufacturing even if less profits" speech seems more like a selling point than inspirational.

I read that this thing costs 75$, which is ridiculous. I would like to see the actual costs, can't imagine it being near that price. If it is, then what a shitty deal. He understands one thing though, his IP does not mean shit, if someone can produce something good enough or equally good for 1/3 the price.

China really is beating capitalists at their own game πŸ˜‚

[–] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 1 week ago

The funniest part of this video is that his product ends up costing $75 and still sold out because americans are so stupid. He still manages to gaslight his viewers making them think his product is inherently or more quality and it's gonna last longer because its american made.

As if you needed a $75 grill brush when you can just use some aluminium foil 😭 influencers once again proving they're salesmen.

[–] TreadOnMe@hexbear.net 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Depends on what you are doing. But machine time is incredibly expensive in the US. But many of the repair parts for the machines will likely have to come from China so...
