Anyone has a list of US-specific or US-heavy/centric communities in Lemmy that I can just block? Or if you good mateys know of any tricks one could apply, cause every other post here is about the US and, as someome who's never stepped foot on the damn country—and might never do so—, this is rather annoying. Yes, president bad. So and so bad. Whatever. I wish to see myself free of this madness, if anyone has any tips. Or maybe I should quit Lemmy, touch grass instead. Idk. Totally done that before, taking a Lemmy break. Maybe that's the way. I might look into limiting US consumption everywhere else as well. US-free internet diet!

I use PieFed. Filter lists are one feature and here I am commenting on user/moderator QoL feature anemic Lemmy. I see absolutely nothing about US politics unless the title doesn't mention what I've blacklisted. Still cuts down on almost all of it except meme communities. I try to join meme communities not hosted on American centric instances instead.

A little bit is okay. I just don't want US centric posts to be the majority of what I see as a Canadian. It's not my country.

I use FreshRSS for news/international news and my mental health is better for it since I don't look at it constantly like my forums addiction.

[–] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 2 points 3 hours ago (1 children)

Thing with PieFed is it don't really have an app. I found Interstellar to be a bit too complicated, or too feature-heavy? Barely used it, though. I like Jerboa's simplicity. Non-US instances are nice, too. I ended up choosing an American* one, it seems, though I dunno what it got, so I dunno that it's 'Murica-centric

I get some news via short daily podcasts or Wikipedia's homepage. Or Lemmy. Though my podcasts have taken to mentioning the US president rather often this year, which goes to show the US influence on the world. But at least it don't bombard me like Lemmy

Thing with PieFed is it don't really have an app.

There's no dedicated app, true. I find adding piefed.ca as an app via Firefox (Fennec) to be good enough, but there's two issues I have right now. One is can't sort by x amount of time for Top posts in the community although according to their repo that's in the next update, just the front page for now. The other is this comment box. For some reason the top bar of useful tools is missing unless I go to edit the same comment after posting it. Weird. Might be a bug.

Haven't tried Interstellar yet personally.

Anyways, hope your post nets you some useful options. Hadn't considered using Wikipedia for that, maybe I can add it to my RSS feeds too somehow.

lemmy.today##div.post-listing:has(span:has-text("/trump/i"))

Add that to your adblock custom filters and create a new one for every keyword you want to block. If you start blocking entire communities that post about U.S. politics, you’re going to kill your feed completely - I’ve tried that already.

Keep in mind that these filters apply even when the keyword is part of another word, so if you filter the term “ice,” it’ll also block titles that mention “police.” You can get around this by adding spaces on both sides of the word.

Also, the instance in front of the filter needs to match the one you’re on, so in my case the filter is:

feddit.uk##div.post-listing:has(span:has-text("/trump/i"))

I'm more of a Jerboa user, not really web. But thanks anyway!

[–] Nemo@slrpnk.net 19 points 18 hours ago (4 children)

I almost never see US politics. This is because I browse by "subscribed".

[–] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 1 points 3 hours ago

Eh, I don't have any community I'm particularly interested in so as to subscribe. I just see what's popular. I guess it's a way to fill time (or waste it)

[–] Libb@jlai.lu 2 points 11 hours ago

Same. I would have left long ago if that was not for that setting and without a careful selection of whatever community I subscribe to ;)

My only blocked content is a few people who I can't be bothered reading again. I also have two words blocked: Trump, Musk just to make sire 99.9% of the shittiest content is filtered out.

[–] kepix@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

you mean the insane amount of trump memes are just an illusion?

[–] LedgeDrop@lemmy.zip 2 points 9 hours ago

(... as I look at my subscribed communities...) What Trump memes?

[–] cloudless@piefed.social 3 points 17 hours ago

Same here. Lemmy is almost unusable if I browse by all.

[–] sbv@sh.itjust.works 14 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

Block the word "Trump" and block communities you don't like. It's remarkably effective.

[–] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 1 points 3 hours ago

Wish Jerboa had that. But I've read it is not on their plans, as it is a hack done by others on top of Lemmy, due to a lack of official support from Lemmy itself (not a Lemmy feature, just a workaround by other app developers)

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 6 points 17 hours ago

As someone from the US blocking "Trump" and "Musk" are vital for sanity.

[–] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 1 points 3 hours ago

Indeed. Sometimws I do feel like I just wanna go "fuck technology" and touch some grass instead. Disconnecting more is good, actually. So, yeah, grass is often better than Lemmy (for me at least).

I do be comming back here, though. Addicted to Lemmy, lol. Or to any source of entertainment, I guess. Something to fill my time

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 9 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

Or if you good mateys know of any tricks one could apply, cause every other post here is about the US

A very simple method would just be blocking those as you see them.

And then keep blocking them.

It's not exactly difficult, I do it with all the AI and most of the meme communities.

Every once and a while someone makes a new one, but you just block it when you see it.

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 7 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Same, that was my experience browsing "All" as a new Lemmy user... "Wow... that's a lot of furry porn... and gay porn... and gay furry porn..."

Blocking those communities one by one rendered the All feed mostly sensible.

[–] Bongles@lemmy.zip 3 points 17 hours ago

LOT of furry porn!

[–] makingStuffForFun@lemmy.ml 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Even good meme communities?

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

I left /microblogmemes and /political memes

If there's anymore left they're just flying under the radar.

But those are "memes" by the Richard Dawkins original meaning of the term. Not "memes" as in "haha, guys like how stupid I am, don't you think I'm stupid" humor.

Memes aren't just shitty jokes, but thats all that's in the shitty meme communities.

[–] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 0 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Unfortunate downside is you will miss other posts from a community, and US is always bound to show up in unrelated communities. I especially remember, albeit in Reddit, a photo of the now-president came out, and was everywhere. The damn gaming community had it posted. Like, wtf? The same one, everywhere. Not Lemmy, of course, but still. If there was a list anywhere of ones I could safely block without much side effects. Not even necessarily politics, but some may be specific to places I do not live in

[–] Bongles@lemmy.zip 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Focus on users as well. Not that many people care enough to come post articles on here about Trump or whatever.

[–] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 1 points 3 hours ago

Wish there were topics or categories, such that we could block that instead. Would make it easier

[–] jordanlund@lemmy.world 7 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

!politics@lemmy.world is exclusively US politics, so you'd want to block that one.

[–] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 3 points 18 hours ago

Seems I have already gotten to that one. Thanks anyway!

[–] PugJesus@lemmy.world 3 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Some clients have an option for blocking keywords. Browsing by subscribed comms is also useful. I only have a handful of comms that allow US politics content that show up on my feed.

[–] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 1 points 3 hours ago

I like Jerboa for its simplicity, but it lacks keyword blocking. I also don't particularly have any community I'd like to follow. I just see what's popular. All the more reason to leave Lemmy, take up grass-touching instead

❌ Touchscreen ✅ Touch grass

[–] loomy@lemy.lol 1 points 18 hours ago (2 children)

careful, you might upset an american.

[–] lemmyknow@lemmy.today 1 points 3 hours ago

Let'em cope.

Seriously, though, they must comprehend that one might not want to be bombarded with their news and politics. I doubt they'd enjoy every other post being about Honduras or wherever, and their president and news and politics, and everything centric to a country they don't particularly care about

[–] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 6 points 17 hours ago (2 children)

Nah we're trying to get away from it, too.

[–] Buelldozer@lemmy.today 6 points 16 hours ago

As an American I fully agree. I've completely had it with our politics infesting everything, everywhere, all the time. For everyone's sanity it needs to stop. More communities need to have and enforce a "No US Politics" rule. No Trump, no Elon, no AOC, no Bernie, no State Senator from bumblefuck Alabama or Los Angeles, California. None of it. Just.Fucking.Stop.Already.

[–] loomy@lemy.lol 1 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

why don't you go to another country?

[–] Paradachshund@lemmy.today 1 points 12 hours ago

Simple to say, not so simple to do. I'd love to honestly.

[–] roofuskit@lemmy.world 0 points 17 hours ago

Start with this one.
