Image is from this article, of a Chilean copper quarry.

Title is a reference to Trump's social media post about copper, which was, as usual, mostly deranged.

Trying to follow Trump's administration is pretty difficult, but as of right now, he is threatening 30% tariffs on Mexico and the EU starting on August 1st, as well as new tariff announcements on a bunch of other countries (including, bizarrely, a 50% tariff on Brazil), and also apparently a 50% tariff on copper, which the US imports half its supply of and is, of course, a very important metal in many applications.

I'm not sure what the plan is to bring back domestic copper production beyond hoping that it just sorta works out, but prominent copper producers, such as Chile and Canada, seem both concerned and confused. Reuters had a line that made me chuckle:

Boric said he was awaiting official communication from the U.S. government, including whether the tariffs would include copper cathodes, and questioned "whether this will actually be implemented or not."

Big mood, Boric.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.
Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.
Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

Video: British police are using Palestine Action proscription to target even mentioning Palestine, Gaza or freedom in protests of any kind. If you tick off having 2 opinions that are associated with Palestine Action the police have reasonable cause to suspect you of support for a proscribed terrorist organisation and to act on that. For example supporting Palestine and wishing for Gaza to be freed meet this threshold.

https://skwawkbox.org/2025/07/15/video-police-using-palestine-action-proscription-to-target-even-mention-of-palestine-gaza-freedom/

So yeah. Currently the vast majority of the population would meet the criteria.

The Spectator: Ukrainians have lost faith in Zelensky

Check out this CRAZY bit

Ukraine’s social media is filled with daily videos of men being bundled into vans by recruitment officers. In the first six months of this year, Ukraine’s Prosecutor’s Office reported that it had opened 107,672 new criminal cases for desertion. Since 2022 some 230,804 such criminal cases have been instigated, suggesting that more soldiers have deserted the Ukrainian army than there are fighting men in today’s British, French and German armies combined

How long can this go on?

Belgian court bans further transit of all military equipment to Israel in landmark ruling

https://pers.11.be/belgian-court-bans-further-transit-of-all-military-equipment-to-israel-in-landmark-ruling

In its ruling, the court immediately prohibits the Flemish government from authorizing any new transit to Israel. Since 2009, there has been an agreement that no arms strengthening Israel's armed forces would be exported — a policy that in practice has been severely undermined. To enforce the ban on new transits, the court has imposed a penalty of €50,000 per shipment that still leaves for Israel. The judge criticized the Flemish government for providing little to no information and stated that Flanders gave the impression it "did not have the situation under control." This passive attitude is particularly problematic given the “crushing responsibility,” the judge said.

Lots of fake Xi Quotes going around while he still has real bangers:

From the Central Urban Work Meeting:

“When it comes to launching projects, it’s always the same few things: artificial intelligence, computing power, and new energy vehicles. Is every province across the country supposed to develop industries in these exact directions?” General Secretary Xi Jinping said, viewing industrial planning from the perspective of “acting in accordance with objective laws,” pointing out the root issues in development: “We must firmly oppose formalism and bureaucratism, and also address the problem of pretending to understand when one doesn’t, and being self-opinionated. We must prevent the emergence of ‘three-pat’ cadres — those who pat their chest, pat their head, and pat their butt.”

“Some of our favs may be implicated.”

After celebrating the overthrow of Assad and staying silent for months of pogroms against Syrian minorities (and attacks on other Palestinian factions), Hamas has bravely come out to condemn the “martyrdom” of the HTS militants bombed by Israel in Syria. Their position on Syria overall remains a major weak point and one to be dissected

spoiler“In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Press Release

The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) condemns, in the strongest terms, the sinful Zionist aggression against the territory of the Syrian Arab Republic, which has resulted in the martyrdom of dozens of army and security forces and innocent civilians.

The fascist aggression against Syria represents a flagrant violation of international law and a continuation of Zionist arrogance and attempts to impose hegemony and control over the peoples and countries of the region. This must be confronted with all force.

We affirm our full solidarity with our brothers in Syria and call on all Arab and Islamic countries and the free people of the world to unite and cooperate to repel this ongoing Zionist aggression and foil the terrorist occupation's schemes that target the will, freedom, and independence of the countries and peoples of the region.

It's clear Israeli expansionism is going to collapse the US client system in West Asia, fascism doesn't know when to stop, a smart group of genociders would use a mercenary regime like HTS to attack its enemies in Lebanon or pay to ship them to Gaza and Yemen to do it's dirty work

But no, Israel is actively trying to destroy its new client sibling, because an ideology of racial supremacy demands it for the sake of short term popularity in Israeli polls

Another good sign that there is no long term viability for this disgusting nazi abomination

Massive shipbuilding changes in DC. None of them good. @gCaptain has confirmed from a White House source that Trump has closed the shipbuilding office at the NSC. Reuters reports that Ian Bennitt, the President’s Special Assistant for Shipbuilding at the White House, has been fired. Favored candidates for Provost and Superintendent positions at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy have received denial notices. At a recent USNI shipbuilding conference, it became clear: major shipbuilding primes are actively fighting plans to expand commercial shipbuilding.

Sources inside the Pentagon say Admirals and SES are digging in their heels on several key shipbuilding objectives. Some Jones Act companies now expressing fear that building new ships could devalue their current fleets.

lol. lmao

Congressional sources say progress on the SHIPS Act is stalling in committee. It’s also unlikely the new Commandant will be confirmed before the August break. We’ve confirmed that the French billionaire who offered to invest $20B in U.S. shipping sent a letter to Trump saying he’s not getting the support he needs to move forward. The U.S. Coast Guard is slashing cutter orders left and right.

Reports from my sources in Korea say the new far-left, pro-China president is chilling U.S.-Korean shipyard cooperation.

man, I love when Americans will label the most milquetoast of libs as communists for simply not being frothing-at-the-mouth psychos

Nobody has seen or heard from @SecDuffy’s new acting Maritime Administrator. The plan to centralize shipbuilding under the Department of Commerce is apparently stalled or stalling. I spoke with half a dozen senior sources in DC—every single one is frustrated. Yes, there’s still optimism around @SECNAV’s commitment to shipbuilding but his plate is full with emerging priorities. Not a single Admiral has publicly supported the SHIPS Act or the White House’s “Restoring America’s Maritime Dominance” plan.

Deadlines are being missed or pencil-whipped on the Maritime Executive Order, and with the NSC shipbuilding office closing, no one knows how the next deadline will be met. Zero follow-through on Trump’s State of the Union promise to open a dedicated White House shipbuilding office. New intel confirms more Navy shipbuilding delays, including further slippage in carrier programs. ... It’s been 252 days since the election, and not a single new ship has been ordered.

...

The Baltimore Bridge removal is delayed another 9 months, and retrofits to prevent future bridge strikes around the nation are postponed. Still zero word from @PeteHegseth on fixing the Army Corps of Engineers, the agency responsible for inland rivers and dredging. What am I missing? The number of panicked and/or depressed calls I’ve received from DC in the last few days is unreal. I’m struggling to find a silver lining.

Massive arms shipment from Iran to Ansarallah/Houthis in Yemen was intercepted by the US and Saudi Arabian supported Yemeni groups/government, known as the "National Resistance Force". Apparently a 750 ton shipment. Many components, referred to as knockdown kits (weapon comes disassembled in many different parts, and is reassembled after shipping, like giant Legos), for anti ship ballistic and cruise missiles, electro optical seekers for anti ship ballistic missiles, surface to air missiles, MANPADs, and most interestingly an Iranian clone of the US "counter UAV" Coyote system, one way attack drone components, manuals for the weapons systems (the manual posted is instructions for how to use a rangefinder), etc. Too much to identify right now. Anyone familiar with Iranian and Yemeni missiles will immediately recognise many components in the pictures. Feel free to reply and comment on anything you recognise or find interesting.

Obviously this is quite a negative development, as the US will get first hand access to some of Iran's most advanced weaponry, and the large shipment of weapons will not arrive in Yemen. It is confirmation that the Iranian and Yemeni arsenal of weapons is very similar (if not the exact same), and that Yemen gets the "latest and greatest" from Iran.

Hopefully, if anything, this whole Syria thing finally makes it crystal clear to the Resistance and other potential Arab targets that there is no capitulation or cooperation with the US and its allies. Once you are marked for destruction, that's it, regardless of whether or not you decide to play ball or if you are one of "their guys". So don't play ball.

Resistance News Network telegram

After decades of relentless struggle and repeated delays, a French court has finally approved the release of Georges Abdallah, the iconic Lebanese resistance fighter and the longest-held political prisoner in Europe.

The decision, made today, July 17, 2025, mandates his release later this month on the condition that he leave France and not return.

Abdallah, eligible for release since 1999, has endured 40 years of unjust imprisonment. His freedom has been consistently obstructed by immense zionist and US pressure. Previous court approvals, including one in 2013 and another in November 2024 for a December 6, 2024 release, were overturned due to this external intervention. In June 2025, the decision was again postponed until today.

It was revealed in 2015 that Hillary Clinton herself ordered the French Foreign Minister to keep Georges imprisoned, absurdly claiming the 72-year-old "may return to the battlefield."

continued...

Georges Abdallah, from his humble Lebanese village of Al-Qoubaiyat, was inspired by the revolutionary broadcasts of the PFLP and went on to form and lead the Lebanese Armed Revolutionary Factions (LARF). He was arrested in 1984, accused of involvement in the killings of a US military attache and a zionist diplomat in Paris in 1982. To Georges, the trial was a farce, a tool of imperialism to obfuscate the complicity of the US and France in the bombing of his country. He neither confirmed nor denied the allegations, maintaining that the French state and its authorities are complicit in the occupation of Lebanon and Palestine.

In his words:

"Let us be worthy of the epic of the torches of freedom, those invincible resistance heroes detained in zionist prisons. Naturally, the popular Palestinian masses and their fighting vanguards in captivity can count on your active solidarity. May a thousand solidarity initiatives flourish for the sake of Palestine and its glorious resistance."

"Yes to building a comprehensive Arab resistance front to confront normalization in all forms. Down with imperialism and its agents, the zionists, and Arab reactionaries."

"Together, Comrades, and only together will we win." #FreeThemAll

The "Hague Group" announced measures against Israel at Bogotá conference.

To kickstart that process, 12 states from across the world — Bolivia, Colombia, Cuba, Indonesia, Iraq, Libya, Malaysia, Namibia, Nicaragua, Oman, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and South Africa — committed to implementing the six measures immediately through their domestic legal and administrative systems to break the ties of complicity with Israel’s campaign of devastation in Palestine — and set a date of 20th September, to coincide with the 80th UN General Assembly, for additional states to join them. Consultations with capitals across the world are now ongoing.

Around 30 countries participated at the meeting (including, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, and China), though it's unclear which states are willing to join this initiative in September.

Primordial NATO: The Delian League

I was thinking recently about the similarities between contemporary NATO and the cloaked imperialism of Athens. It’s not a perfect parallel, obviously, but the similarities are quite strong. Like NATO, the Delian League was formed as a defensive alliance against a hostile foreign power, with the Persian Empire as a stand in for the USSR. Polities in Northern Greece, fearing that Sparta’s strategic standoff in the Peloponnese would render them an unreliable protector, formed the Delian League to wage a continuation war against Persia.

Athens was obviously the preeminent naval power within the alliance, but it was nominally governed by an assembly in which each member state had an equal vote. This system became a thin veneer over de facto Athenian hegemony. The league became a vehicle for a creeping Athenian imperialism through its unique system of military commitments. Member states were obligated to either maintain a requisite number of ships and men, or make an equivalent cash contribution. As time went on, more and more members opted to contribute cash rather than maintain forces, which Athens used to raise the equivalent forces for themselves. Rather than fielding a coalition navy, the league became a revenue stream for the growing Athenian fleet.

This in turn made the lesser members more and more subservient to Athens as the military power disparity grew. Despite the nominal system of equal votes, Athens was more and more able to impose its will. Members who attempted to defect were severely punished. Within a relatively short period of time, the Delian League became a de facto vehicle of Athenian Empire: a mechanism for extracting resources from tributary states and subjecting them to Athenian political domination.

NATO is very similar, as this week we see European members agreeing to buy more American weapons as part of a shell game to arm Ukraine. Revenue from Europe flows to American companies, and Europe bends to American foreign policy. Like the Delian League, NATO ostensibly has a consensus-driven governance and nominally consists of a coalition of forces, but in reality Europe is unable to make autonomous foreign policy choices. NATO has also helped to hollow out European defense manufacturing, and instead funnels money into the US as Euro members scramble to purchase HIMARS, Patriots, aircraft, and more.

As a mechanism for aggrandizing state power, this is a very effective and very ancient model which works for the US just as it worked for Athens. The comity implied by the word “alliance” is a diplomatic narcotic that numbs the tributaries to the reality of empire. As a coda, the connection is even deeper, because Donald Kagan, who wrote a magisterial history of the Peloponnesian War and was an absolute gem of a historian, was also the Father in Law of Victoria Nuland. So, make of that what you will.

Interesting reporting coming from both the Financial Times and Washington Post today.

Financial Times

Two people familiar with the conversation between Trump and Zelenskyy said the US president had asked his Ukrainian counterpart whether he could hit military targets deep inside Russia if he provided weapons capable of doing so.

“Volodymyr, can you hit Moscow? . . . Can you hit St Petersburg too?” Trump asked on the call, according to the people.

They said Zelenskyy replied: “Absolutely. We can if you give us the weapons.”

Trump signalled his backing for the idea, describing the strategy as intended to “make them [Russians] feel the pain” and force the Kremlin to the negotiating table, according to the two people briefed on the call.

During a meeting with US defence officials and intermediaries from Nato governments, Zelenskyy received a list of long-range strike systems that potentially could be made available to Ukraine via third-party transfers.

The arrangement would allow Trump to sidestep the need for Congressional approval on direct US military aid by authorising weapons sales to European allies, who would then pass the systems on to Kyiv.

The Ukrainians had asked for Tomahawk missiles, precision strike cruise missiles with a range of around 1,600km. But the Trump administration — like the Biden administration — had concerns about Ukraine’s lack of restraint, said a person familiar with the list shared with Zelenskyy.

Washington Post

What Trump didn’t talk about is that the military assistance might also include authorization for some powerful new offensive weapons. I’m told by a source involved in the decision that this is likely to include permission to use the 18 long-range ATACMS missiles now in Ukraine at their full range of 300 kilometers (about 190 miles). That wouldn’t reach all the way to Moscow or St. Petersburg, but it would strike military bases, airfields and supply depots deep inside Russia that are now out of range. The package might also include more ATACMS.

Trump also considered sending Tomahawk cruise missiles, the same weapons fired against Iranian targets last month. If fired from Ukraine, these could hit Moscow and St. Petersburg, and they were included in discussion as late as Friday. But the Tomahawks are off the delivery list for now, I’m told. They could be deployed later if Trump wants even more leverage.

Trump’s determination to squeeze Putin was conveyed in a conversation last week with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a source told me. Trump asked Zelensky why he didn’t hit Moscow. “We can if you give us the weapons,” Zelensky said. Trump said Ukraine needed to put more pressure on Putin, not just Moscow but St. Petersburg, too.

Trump decided to escalate for three reasons, according to a source familiar with administration discussions. First, he believed that Putin was disrespecting him, feigning a readiness to make peace but ignoring the U.S. president’s call for a ceasefire. Second, he saw the efficacy of U.S. military power in the use of B-2 bombers and Tomahawk missiles against Iran. And third, he thought Putin would only negotiate if threatened with greater force. As the Russians like to say, Trump decided to “escalate to de-escalate.”

So TLAMs (Tomahawk Land Attack cruise Missiles) are up for consideration for Ukraine, but currently not being sent. More ATACMS are likely on the way, to supplement the current 18 ATACMS missiles Ukraine has. No mention of JASSM or JASSM-ER air launched stealth subsonic cruise missiles or PrSM ballistic missiles, or SM-6 in a surface to surface role. JASSM is interesting because the US could send the shorter range older variants for now, as a test run of sort, and there are many of these in the stockpiles likely set to expire soon.

The point about Trump getting to see the effectiveness of US military power in Israeli and US airstrikes on Iran is something very much overlooked. Part of the Trump right wing is full of useful idiots and grifters that don't understand basic science, think that the weather is controlled by the CIA, that F-35s don't work, don't understand stealth technology, vastly understate US military capabilities as the US military was "destroyed by woke", etc. Laura Loomer, Matt Gaetz, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Tucker Carlson, Tulsi Gabbard and Pete Hegseth to an extent, etc. Those kind of grifters. They got shut down and shut out in real time, and now Marco Rubio and US Military Generals are in with Trump, given the events of the past few weeks, they essentially proved themselves to Trump. One could say that Rubio is effectively president here. This is very concerning, an emboldened Rubio, Trump, and US Military may choose to throw their weight around on other issues and in other theatres.

Very funny to watch America warmonger over Taiwan incessantly when the PRC is just going to win a culture victory and make a military takeover unnecessary

Notably bellicose speech from Naim Qassem, leader of Hezbollah, today.

Our strength as a resistance lies in our faith and our stance. Military capability is only a part, and it’s tied to the strength of our position.

If we defend and suffer heavy losses—which is expected—we still have hope. If we resist, we can close the door to the enemy and open a door to liberation.

Lebanon faces three real dangers: Israel on the southern border, Daesh-aligned elements on the eastern border, and American hegemony attempting to control Lebanon, impose guardianship, and paralyze its ability to act and live.

Let our stance be united. Let’s prioritize confronting these dangers. Afterward, we are open to discussing a national defense strategy and a security strategy.

We will not abandon our faith and strength. We are ready for confrontation. We will not surrender or hand over our weapons to "israel."

We know confrontation is very costly—but surrender leaves us with nothing. Learn from what’s happening in the region and the world.

We are ready for defensive confrontation if "israel" attacks.

As long as we live and breathe, “israel” will not achieve its objectives. We can guarantee this because we have an extraordinary popular support base—unprecedented in history—ready to sacrifice for dignity, pride, and Lebanon’s independence.

Speaking openly of the cost of confrontation and the necessity of it. There may be war soon.

The mayor of Lvov has apparently had hundreds of Soviet war dead exhumed from the Hill of Glory, including an NKVD guerrilla, Nikolai Kuznetsov, who directed the assassination of numerous high level Nazi officials including 3 German generals, the vice-governor of Galicia and the Nazi appointed chief judge of Ukraine during WW2, before being killed in a firefight with Banderites in 1944.

He hopes to exchange them with the Russian government for Ukrainian soldiers' remains.

He posted about this to his telegram account.

Corbyn party now at 15. This is probably the last shot the UK has to pull out of a tailspin without a revolution.

Seems like the Palestinian resistance in Gaza has been preparing wide crackdowns on infiltrators, traitors, and agents

“ 🚨 A high-ranking security source in the Palestinian resistance to Al-Jazeera: — We have a blacklist of war profiteers, organized gangs, and agents of the occupation.

Those listed are under our surveillance, and we will hold revolutionary trials for them as soon as a suitable opportunity arises.

We will work to publish the blacklist to the public in preparation for retribution.

If these individuals do not return to their people and repent for their crimes, there will be no escape from publishing the list.

The sheltering of suspects by the enemy prevents the swift control of chaos, monopolization, and crime.

We warn the suspects that the occupation's cover is temporary, and they will be exposed before their people.”

IMPORTANT PRESS STAREMENT FROM PALESTINIAN RESISTANCE FACTIONS

spoiler

🟢⚫️🔴♦️🟩 Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement, Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Palestinian National Initiative, and Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine - General Command: —

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Press statement issued by the Palestinian Factions regarding the war of starvation and genocide against our people in the Gaza Strip

The Palestinian factions are following with deep concern and comprehensive popular mobilization the systematic genocide crime that our steadfast people in the Gaza Strip are subjected to, embodied in the war of starvation, widespread bombing, and comprehensive siege, carried out by the zionist occupation government led by the criminal Netanyahu, with direct and blatant support from the American administration, and shameful international complicity and suspicious silence from the European Union and international community institutions.

Our people are entering their twenty-second month in confronting this comprehensive, open war, which has gone beyond bombing, killing, and destruction, to include the use of starvation and medical and humanitarian siege through the deliberate prevention of food and medical aid, in a desperate attempt to subjugate them and break their will.

What the Strip is subjected to is considered a war crime according to international laws and norms, and a crime against humanity by all standards, surpassing in its brutality, criminality, and sadism the crimes of Nazism and Fascism. In the face of these continuous crimes, we affirm the following:

  1. We hold the war criminal Netanyahu and his fascist government fully responsible for the policies of genocide and the war of starvation they are practicing against more than two million Palestinians, in an organized crime that constitutes a blatant violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.

  2. We hold the American administration, as the primary partner and sponsor of the criminal Netanyahu's government, fully responsible for the continuation of this brutal aggression, and for the failure of the negotiation process due to the absence of any serious pressure on the occupation government to stop its crimes.

  3. We denounce the suspicious international silence, especially from the European Union, and consider that the United Nations' inability and the international community's inaction encourage the occupation to continue its crimes against our besieged people in the Gaza Strip.

  4. We affirm that these crimes clearly reveal the intentions of the occupation government, which does not seek calm or agreement, but rather aims to empty the land and impose a project of extermination and forced displacement.

  5. We warn that the continuation of this approach may negatively affect the negotiation process and open the door to escalation possibilities, holding the "israeli" government and its supporting countries responsible.

  6. We appeal to the masses of our Palestinian people wherever they are, our Arab and Islamic nation, and the free people of the world, to intensify popular, political, and media efforts and massive, pressing movements to stop this ongoing crime, end the unjust siege, and break the extermination project carried out by the occupation state with American support and international inaction.

  7. We call on all solidarity activists with our Palestinian people around the world to intensify their actions and unite their efforts to pressure their governments to stop their support and complicity with Netanyahu's fascist government, and to work towards ending the policies of extermination and starvation practiced against our people, and achieving justice and freedom for Palestine.

  8. In light of this tragic scene, we renew our pledge to the masses of our people that, while we feel your pain and suffering, we will continue our efforts to end them, and we will proceed with the option of comprehensive resistance until the siege is broken, the aggression is stopped, and our people's goals of liberation, return, and independence are achieved.

At Hampton Synagogue this morning, Andrew Cuomo said he "didn't debunk" Mamdani enough.

Cuomo added that Mamdani got "more than 50 percent" of the Jewish vote.

"Those young people, the under-30 people, they are pro-Palestinian, and they don't consider it being anti-Israel."

Second Israeli ultra-Orthodox party to quit government in blow to Netanyahu

The ultra-Orthodox Shas party says it will leave the government in response to dispute over mandatory military service. A key partner in Benjamin Netanyahu’s government says it is quitting, dealing a major blow to the Israeli prime minister that could leave him heading a minority coalition in parliament. The ultra-Orthodox Shas party said on Wednesday that it was leaving the cabinet in protest against lawmakers’ failure to guarantee future exemption from military conscription for religious students.

“Shas representatives … find with a heavy heart that they cannot stay in the government and be a part of it,” said the group in a statement. It was not immediately clear whether the decision would leave Netanyahu with a minority in parliament. Without Shas, Netanyahu’s coalition would have 50 seats in the 120-seat Knesset.

Shas, which has long served as a kingmaker in Israeli politics, said it would not work to undermine the government once outside it and could vote with it on some laws. It also said it would not support its collapse. The departure of Shas from the government comes one day after another ultra-Orthodox party, United Torah Judaism (UTJ), resigned from the government over the same issue, which has prompted an explosive debate in the country after more than 21 months of war with Hamas in Gaza.

While ultra-Orthodox seminary students have long been exempt from mandatory military service, many Israelis are angered by what they see as an unfair burden carried by other groups who serve. The moves by Shas and UTJ come just before the Israeli parliament starts a three-month recess on July 27, giving the prime minister several months of little to no legislative activity to bring the parties back into the fold.

Ultra-Orthodox Jewish leaders say full-time devotion to holy scriptures study is sacrosanct and fear their young men will turn away from religious life if they are drafted into the military. Last year, the Supreme Court ordered an end to the exemption. The parliament has been trying to work out a new conscription bill, which has so far failed to meet the demands of both Shas and UTJ. Religious Services Minister Michael Malkieli, a member of Shas, said on Wednesday that rabbis were angered after Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee chairman Yuli Edelstein reneged on promises regarding the bill, according to a report in the Times of Israel. Malkieli, reading from a statement by the Council of Torah Sages, also hit out at actions taken by the Israeli military and attorney general to pursue draft dodgers, describing the move as “nothing less than cruel and criminal persecution against yeshiva students”.
