Hornets are generally fairly docile because they need to conserve their energy to chase me around neighborhood

My neighbor had one like this in his tree, bald face hornets. He would mow under it and do yardwork, they never bothered him. However, me across the street got stung on two separate occasions before I asked to split the cost of an exterminator because those bastards kept stinging me in the face. I hate killing things but I hate being stung more.

I have an uncontrollable fear reaction around wasps, they sense it, they get scared and then defensive, it's a nice vicious cycle.

I have a theory that animals perceive fear and anger as the same emotion. Since with most animals whenever they get scared they lash out and attack things.

So they see you scared and react so you dont attack them. Its just unfortunate for them since we can remember and retaliate.

[–] Whostosay@sh.itjust.works 3 points 10 months ago

I don't think they are the same, but I do know they perceive fear as a threat for the reason you laid out. They may react to them the same way, but even then they seem to have limits on that.

Bald face hornets are extra scary. One of their tools is spraying venom into an animals eyes, leaving them temporarily blind

Hornets in your neighbourhood are a good thing - they eat wasps and other nuisances, and they do not usually sting you.

[–] whyNotSquirrel@sh.itjust.works 3 points 10 months ago (2 children)

wasp?! I heard about mosquitoes but never heard about wasps

[–] UpperBroccoli@lemmy.blahaj.zone 7 points 10 months ago

Aye. Technically, hornets are just a bigger kind of wasps, but they still do hunt their smaller cousins.

The only thing really to know is that it is not advisable to get too close to their nest. If you leave them be, they leave you be, too.

[–] Scrawny@reddthat.com 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, wasps are hardy a nuisance unless you're close to their nest. Hornets on the other hand go out of their way to ruin my day.

[–] Enkrod@feddit.org 3 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It's exactly the opposite in Germany.

Wasps are generaly all-purpose assholes who go out of their way to bother you, while I've had a hornets nest on my balcony and had one crawl over my fingers without issue.

[–] MacAttak8@lemmy.world 2 points 10 months ago

I have had the same experience too in the US. Yellowjacket wasps are the absolute worst while hornets are chill unless you get really close to their nest.

[–] silly_crotch@sh.itjust.works 1 points 10 months ago

They mostly pretty on bees though, and at least in my neck of the woods, are considered invasive.

My parents have a nest in their garage every year and nobody has ever been stung. They're very placid little helicopters.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 5 points 10 months ago (1 children)

I wouldn't know, because I'd NEVER go into that garage again. Ever.

[–] starlinguk@lemmy.world 1 points 10 months ago

Meh. You occasionally hear a very low buzz and that's about it. They don't even fly around your head the way wasps do sometimes.

Fuck Asian hornets, though.
