To learn about and discuss meaningful news, analysis and perspectives from around the world, with a focus on news outside the Anglosphere and beyond what is normally seen in corporate media (e.g. anti-imperialist, anti-Zionist, Marxist, Indigenous, LGBTQ, people of colour).
To encourage community members to contribute commentary and for others to thoughtfully engage with this material.
To support healthy and good faith discussion as comrades, sharpening our analytical skills and helping one another better understand geopolitics.
We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.
Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

I'm not usually like woo give them a life sentence but like of all people getting life sentences I feel like this should be on there, 29 years seems kinda light for all that especially with the lack of remorse
Life sentences in the EU are sort of oddball shit in that they don't ever actually sentence anyone to life. It's a minimum-before-parole-eligible-sentence for humanitarion reasons (don't @ me about this). At the time of conviction in the UK the maximum anyone ever got was legally 37 years but that was for premeditated murder, which the EU generally thinks of worse than a bunch of childremoved (don't @ me about this).
I don't wanna jump in the trenches for judges here at all but the responsible judge might well have figured with an earliest possible parole at age 64 and him being Ian Watkins and never making that one, his earliest release would've been at 74 at which point he'd probably be dead and you don't have to drag this shit through the ECHR for a number of years
The UK does actually have "whole life orders," which mean you will die in prison. Wayne Couzens, who murdered Sarah Everard, received this sentence. The UK also isn't in the EU.
I didn't want to get into the whole shebang of it just to point out that may well have been a politically affected judgement given the UKs rather special relationship to the EU while they were in it but there's a reason the Wiki Article of Whole Life Order Prisoners segregates between before the ECHR stepped in and after. Ian Watkins 2013 conviction is very much within EU timeframe, Wayne Couzens isn't albeit at a weird transitional phase where they're out of the EU but also adhere to most of it's shit, but mostly along the lines of "does this crash the economy" which convicting a murderrapist doesn't really do.

lol goddamn. the fact that his crimes did or were going to involve babies means he truly deserved the worst. this is the kind of person who should be locked up for life with no parole. i wish i could be a prison abolitionist but some people absolutely need to be locked up. he was eligible for parole eventually. WAS. its crazy he lasted this long in prison.
Two co-defendants, who were the mothers of Watkins’ victims, were sentenced to 14 and 17 years in prison.

FYI that first time he got held hostage was over a drug debt he owed to other prisoners.
The prison he was in is designated for sex offenders and people who have committed multiple murders, most of the people he was in with weren't much better than him.

Also FYI I've heard from people incarcerated that the whole "pedos always get murdered in the joint" is grossly exaggerated. Dudes hoping to get parolled eventually usually don't want a murder on their prison record. Apparently the only time it really happens is if the guy is like openly bragging about the people he abused, which apparently does happen fairly often (like damn, if I got locked up for something fucked like that I'd kept my mouth fucking shut). Hell, Dahmer got killed because he kept making mashed potato figures of kids and chopping them up and covering them in ketchup. Apparently other prisoners, including the guy who eventually killed him, went to him and were like "dude cut this shit out, it's fucking creepy and if you keep it up someone is going to fucking shiv you, just quietly do you damn time and people will leave you alone".
He was previously arrested in 2012 for drug possession, which led police to confiscate his computer and find indecent images of children on the device.
