Welcome to c/news! Please read the Hexbear Code of Conduct and remember... we're all comrades here.

Rules:

-- PLEASE KEEP POST TITLES INFORMATIVE --

Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body.

If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include not just the twitter.com URL but also Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance). There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source (archive.today, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org). Twitter screenshots still need to be sourced or they will be removed.

Mass-tagging comm moderators across multiple posts like a broken Markov chain bot will result in a comm ban.

Repeated consecutive posting of reactionary sources, fake news, misleading / outdated news, false alarms over ghoul deaths, and/or shitposts will result in a comm ban.

Neglecting to use content warnings or NSFW when dealing with disturbing content will be removed until in compliance. Users who are consecutively reported due to failing to use content warnings or NSFW tags when commenting on or posting disturbing content will result in the user being banned.

Using April 1st as an excuse to post fake headlines, like the resurrection of Kissinger while he is still fortunately dead, will result in the poster being thrown in the gamer gulag and be sentenced to play and beat trashy mobile games like 'Raid: Shadow Legends' in order to be rehabilitated back into general society.

Chuds be memeing about China's "social credit" while cheering this on

[–] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 45 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Shows why China needs better soft power. US can do everything worse than what China has ever done and you’ll still have people whining about social credit and Chinese lack of freedom

China

soft power

Going to post my standard response to this topic:

That's some good soft power. Who wants a bear hug?

[–] dead@hexbear.net 36 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

pandas are an actual china soft power policy. china sends pandas to zoos around the world as a sign of friendship.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panda_diplomacy

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 26 points 2 months ago

Yes, that's the point I'm making. Along with a play on "soft power" and baby animals tending to be literally soft, fluffy, and hug shaped.

[–] footfaults@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It's unfair how adorable that panda is. No country could resist that

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Bears have no right to be as cute as they are. If I'm not supposed to snuggle the bear cubs, then the bear cubs shouldn't be so cuddle shaped and made of fluffy.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I want more bear cubs demanding cuddles than can actually fit in my lap... those look so snuggly. Hell, even one bear cub to hug would be so neat.

If the Soviet Union had figured out how to use Siberian grizzlies as literal soft power, maybe we'd have gotten the good ending to the Cold War... these lil guys are so damn hug shaped. If bears not for bear hugs, bears shouldn't be made of cute.

Ooooh... the hexagonal bear! That's a lotta bear to hug! Fluffy! If bear not for big hug, why bear so big and made of fluffy?

regardless of the strength of chinas soft power it would be wasted on americans. the people here are by and large beyond converting

[–] coolusername@hexbear.net 10 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

not possible. CIA controls all media not just in the US, but all "allied" countries. However, if I were in charge of PR/psychological operations in China I would create a website with official debunks of anti-China propaganda. Have it all in one place. There's so much stuff that can only be found on places like /r/sino or some obscure local Chinese gov website.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 28 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Power of propaganda. USA got the largest prison population, more military bases than the romans, sanctions that kill millions world wide, software that violates privacy and anonymity like nothing else, designates anti fasicsts and anti capitalists as terrorists, does racial profiling all the fucking time but will be on some dumb family guy gag about "bad countries".

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 9 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I'm not sure whether you're talking about government software used to spy on people, or about the ways US tech companies bundle spyware into their products for both enterprises and private households, but... yeah, that one's a Problem.

But hey, at least the combination of certain companies being utterly shameless about that stuff and the US being viewed as absolutely fucking batshit crazy on the global stage, is causing a lot of federal and regional governments outside the US to do software sovereignty initiatives and try to cut out proprietary software from US corporations, and as a Linux nerd who has a fascination with "Official State Distros", that trend is really fucking cool to me.

"Silver lining of US fascism in the digital age: Governments using a better operating system than horribly outdated versions of bad old Microshaft Winblows, lol!"

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago

You know what? That is a silver lining tbh. Another that drives me up a wall is when whistleblowers expose this and they are used as proof of American transparency and praise the US still thats-why-im-confused This is masterclass in brainwashing.

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Microshaft Winblows

after 3 decades as a user, i thought i had seen/heard every construction but this is a new one for me. lmao. A+

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

Funny, for me, that's literally the most common one of these I've heard. Well, other than just "Winblows" on its own. Or the old "a computer is like air conditioning, useless once you open windows" from the pre 9x era. I've also heard it as "Microsuck Winblows" which is a good play on "sucks" and "blows", but doesn't quite lambast as hard that the company shafts the users of its products, which feels almost more relevant today than it was in '95 when, AFAIK, "Microshaft Winblows" started spreading around.

they're so afraid of what happened to that fucker

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 33 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

They know that if even one killer gets away with it then it's going to be open season on the fash

[–] KobaCumTribute@hexbear.net 42 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I think it's even more than that: the guy who allegedly did it was just some "apolitical" right-wing-by-default all-American chud, and he allegedly did it because Kirk - whose vile beliefs and rhetoric are standard for GOP demons - was just that loathsome a hatemongering monster. Like think about that: if even that kind of guy, this safely disaffected and intrinsically right wing demographic that they count on to support them by default, can turn on them for how openly monstrous they are, that means a good 90% of the country is suddenly a potential threat.

Their own guys are turning on them for being too evil. That's something they don't know how to stop, hence the panicked flailing and sobbing attempts at deflection. They want to control the situation and canonize this little neo-nazi grifter slug that they all actually hated or thought was beneath their notice while frantically trying to bury all the overwhelming public disapproval of Kirk's bile in the hopes that that could get rid of it.

Strong reminder that the proletariat... ALL the proletariat... Are a revolutionary threat. Even those who have been taken in by right wing views of the moment. Ultimately the proles want a better life, for themselves and for other proles, at least the ones who haven't been turned borderline psychotic. People like Kirk are so vile and disgusting that even those taken in by bullshit will see him as vile and disgusting, especially if they're near to someone directly affected by it that they don't personally hate (in this case, the trans roommate most likely).

We don't have to and can not fix the backwards views of all the proles. All we can do is drag enough of them to our side and educate them to form a critical mass necessary for the vanguard to then lead the rest of them regardless of backwards views.

yeah its funny how violent people from a violent culture radicalize violently but I'm super hyped for them to reap

funny, when i got radicalized i just started feeding people, but i wasn't raised by gun humping christofascist triscuits

The country of free speech

[–] SkingradGuard@hexbear.net 18 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Chuds already have a response to this

" :smuglord: oh yeah, weren't you liberals saying 'not freedom from consequences?!' :smuglord: "

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 2 points 2 months ago

Weren't the libs saying that in terms of private companies or private citizens doing stuff? Not government?

This lawyer is offering free (pro bono) legal representation to people who have had their visa denied or revoked due to "Charlie Kirk-related speech".

Eric Lee @EricLeeAtty
If your visa was denied or revoked due to Charlie Kirk-related speech, the Consular Accountability Project (@ConsularActProj) is interested in representing you pro bono.

The MSM continues to be garbage. The AP article effectively gives zero context. It didn't quote a single word of the "6 foreigners". The First Amendment wasn't even mentioned once. How often has something roughly similar happened before in other presidencies? Biden, Obama, Dubya, etc. Not a word on that either!

[–] dead@hexbear.net 32 points 2 months ago

The story is developing still. I think it's all based on the State Department tweets. I think the number 6 is based on the number of people named in the State Departement tweets. All of the government seems to be making their announcements through twitter now.

I saw the same headline tweeted by a journalist and AP News is the only article I could find put out so far. I'm adding reuters to the post. Reuters usually updates the article with new details over time.

FDR put US citizens and non citizens with Japanese ancestry in concentration camps, what constitution?

[–] P1d40n3@hexbear.net 51 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Amerikkkan attacks on the finest of posters. You hate to see it.

[–] FunkyStuff@hexbear.net 44 points 2 months ago

Not to farm +2s but if I was president I would tell the state department to give an award to these people for good posting.

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 48 points 2 months ago (1 children)

On the one hand, this is obviously horrible.

On the other, it's very funny that they're making people take loyalty oaths to Charlie Kirk.

On the mysterious third hand, lmao at that german post in particular. Doesn't even mention Kirk at all.

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 7 points 2 months ago

"on the gripping hand" for sci fi nerds

[–] Trying2KnowMyself@hexbear.net 47 points 2 months ago

As a visa holder working for Lockheed Martin, I would like to state unequivocally that Charlie Kirk deserved it.

[–] Jabril@hexbear.net 37 points 2 months ago

Its kind of funny that they are boosting the anti Kirk truths these folks are tweeting about

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 32 points 2 months ago

no lies detected in any of these posts.

[–] PoY@lemmygrad.ml 30 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Doesn't the state department remember that twitter is always hacked? That's what all the senators and other officials have always said when called out on one of their tweets.

[–] mrbeano@lemmy.zip 12 points 2 months ago

Oh no! Grok, is this true?

[–] BeanisBrain@hexbear.net 28 points 2 months ago

Liberals will, as usual, blame this on Trump and not on capital.

[–] Dessa@hexbear.net 27 points 2 months ago
