Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

FAQ

I don't look XYZ and/or sometimes I can pass as white so I don't know if I can post here. Can I?

What can I post?

nothing gives me more disappointment than seeing a poc believe the racist propaganda about them, "of course we get our student visa revoked so much! we commit crimes there", how can victims feel guilt towards their victmizers?

Not gonna defend it but will add that among immigrants there is a lot of mixed feelings just depending on what part of let's say Mexico your from. According from my mom people from everywhere but Guerrero are stingy backstabbers. The lumping of immigrants together by whites does something on them old histories and when you start including different countries together only confuses the issue more. Still isn't helped with how right wing Spanish speaking news networks are. That attitude also feels very pick me tbh

To me The world is looking more and more perilous white people are desperate frothing at the mouth of killing “savage” immigrants the more I think about the more the answer is revealed to me if we can’t live in peace in harmony together and you want to exterminate us? Ethnically displace us or march us on to death camps in naru, elsalvador or Nigeria then we have no reason to exist in the same area as you if the Haitians can achieve their liberation this way then it gives me hope that we can to I don’t want equality with my oppressor I want to be liberated of him

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago (7 children)

libs consider jokes about 9/11 to be offensive but not jokes about tianamen square, they either think:

  1. they don't believe it's real so they don't care.
  2. they believe it's real but dgaf because it's not white people.

My mom has embraced the vegan mindset, she's been making fun of carnists lmao. I'm so proud of her, I'll make the rest of my family full vegans soon

[–] Angel@hexbear.net 16 points 2 months ago

The workplace is majority Black.

Haha, nice.

If I get hired, they said I can start as early as 2 days from then, but it might take longer.

I might see about getting a bus pass. This place is pretty far and a friend gave me some Uber money to get to and from the interview.

Let us hope.

Love this Haitian vegan queen, by the way, but I'mma try to chill.

I want white people to be liberated of their own whiteness. I feel bad for them. I think this is partially possible, but not completely possible.

Once a white person got drunk and cried while talking to me about hating being white. They cannot escape the fact that their upbringing is sterilized of culture from far more ancient ancestors. They resent the fact that their later ancestors cut ties with their own ancestral culture, and made their deal about erasing other people. Still, they can try their best to learn about the side opposing imperialism and to respect everyone that their ancestors spun up race conspiracies about. To not perpetuate white supremacy propaganda.

They may not be able to stop being white, but they can get rid of certain aspects of whiteness. Not just in behavior because that would just be acting nice, but at the roots in their belief system. They can stop downpunching in every way they spot it.

[–] Lemmygradwontallowme@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago (2 children)

An essay on this matter, though I'd say it was too optimistic

This is why “white genocide” actually does have a meaning beyond “racial integration.” If you take away a white person’s ability to live as the undisputed master of the universe—to take his own experience as normal and privileged, and to presume all others to be debased copies of his own primary existence—then you take away his whiteness. His heart will fall to the ground and he will not be able to lift it up again. After that, nothing will happen: whiteness will be dead.

We should welcome this manifest destiny. White people will not be systematically murdered, after all; non-white people mainly want to live as full human beings in the societies in which they were born, and they don’t need to kill white people to do it. In the 18th century, they did: if enslaved Haitians wanted to live as full human beings in the societies in which they were born, they did have to kill white people to do it; the only thing to regret is that enslavers laid the seeds of their own misfortune.

We do not live in the 18th or 19th or even the 20th century. Donald Trump’s generation can remember America before the civil rights movement, before California and Texas—and so many of our cities—became majority-minority, before their cause became a lost one. In a generation, Donald Trump’s generation will all be dead, and they’ll be replaced by the least white generation in American history. The arc of demographics is long, though: we’ll live the rest of our lives in a world where whiteness is backed in a corner, wounded and angry. We’ll live in a world where it has never been harder for a white person to live as the undisputed master of the universe, to take his own experience as normal and privileged, and to presume all others to be debased copies of his own primary existence, where whiteness is a plurality, still, but not a majority, where white people have dominance but no longer have hegemony. Because hegemony is dominance that doesn’t need violence to maintain itself, this is a dangerous world to live in: post-hegemonic white supremacy is organizing for war, and we will not be free of it for a long time. Because white supremacists see their morbid collectivity vanishing, they are willing to die for it, and to kill.

We can live for it, I hope. My children, if I have them, will speak Spanish, and in their life they will assimilate me into the new world we can all dream of creating together. Whiteness needs to die, because it was only ever about death in the first place. We can dream of something better, and more to the point, we can live it. A term like “white genocide” will not help us do that. But it’s good to look at what they are against, what they fear, what they hate, and remember what it is that we can be unironically for. There is probably a word for it, and I hope we all live long enough to learn what it is.

So now the liberals pivot to mocking Somalis because they didn't rock with kamala and the gaza genocide and trump is mocking them.

[–] CommunistCuddlefish@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (4 children)

How white people talk about Somalis is a litmus test.  I've spoken to people I thought were ok or not super racist because they were polite to me, who then showed their whole ass by shit-talking Somalis.  And then they had the gall to wonder why I was upset at them for being racist!

this contains a single sentence of what one of those vile devils said to me "You're not Somali, why does this bother you, they give immigrants a bad name, you should be upset at them too!"

If a white person shit-talks Somali immigrants, I know I'm dealing not with a person but with an irredeemable devil and the best response is to just start verbally harassing them so they feel bad about themself.

I've been hanging around a lot of white queer mostly T folk lately and it's clear when talking with them that their only oppression is that they're queer. I can't put my finger on it but it's like white gays who are only gay by chance and are still republican.

[–] 3rdWorldCommieCat@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago

I feel like it's impossible to separate white people from imperialism, even white "leftists" are pro NATO and hate "shithole countries" and it's people, they will mention their backwards culture, goverment, history, and yet claim to be not racist.

Even if they denounce capitalism, they are still imperialists and perpetuate it.

Made some carrot lox. Thankfully enough, I already had every ingredient on hand.

It has to sit and marinate for at least 24 hours, though, so I won't be having it until tomorrow, but I'll post a pic with the carrot lox, tofu cream cheese, capers, cucumbers, and pickled red onions on a bagel. I also like to add some sriracha for a spicy kick.

[–] vegeta1@hexbear.net 14 points 2 months ago (2 children)

blocky-wat they really don't get DEI do they

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago

White people (white men especially) get so much """"affirmative action"""" that their accusations are nothing but confessions. If universities went solely based on GPAs and SAT scores, they would have more Somalian-American and Ethiopian-Americans than white people. Instead, non-whites have to deal with alumni scholarship failsons, GI Bill war criminals, and general rich people shit who scream and piss themselves because ICE isn't deporting people fast enough.

Who knew minority groups were on to something when they say things like "If they can strip us of our rights/citizenship, then you're next since thats wont fix anything and they'll move down the hierarchy until its two white guys accusing the other of being a Bolshevik."

check the subreddit-logo for where I live

shitheel conservatives malding about immigrants doing corruption and defrauding, vs. liberals saying "not all [specific group of immigrants]"

Most highly upvoted comments are "we can't have an honest conversation without acknowledging two things: Most ____ are not criminals, and at the same time the people who did this are disproportionately ____"

Nobody acknowledging that "fraud" of this type is pretty damn minor and if you actually care about misuse of public money the first place to look is "how much money did the military-industrial complex spend in the last 2 years to give weapons to isntreal so that fake country could murder over 100,000 Palestinians?" You know what, I support and respect immigrants who want to defraud The Great Satan.

Mods not removing obviously racist comments

It was a mistake to open that, looking at reddit-logo fills me with contempt for my neighbors but it's not like that's a fair or representative sample. I was tempted to use my reddit account to either argue with these removed in the comments or write up an effortpost to post there, but the fact is :stormfront: is :stormfront: and its userbase is so fascist that it will do no good. At most I'll just be baited into telling a bunch of racist assholes to do graphic things to their bodies that violate Reddit's TOS and get permabanned again.

My mom has faced the klan trying to lynch her, border patrol trying to intimidate her, coyotes trying to take advantage of her, wild dogs trying to go at her throat and even sharks when an ex tried to kill her but she never gets more nervous than when she's dealing with banks/loan places. I think I get it when the danger is up in your face you act and think fast but these places talk sweetly to you as they put a noose around your neck.

[–] Wmill@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago

Intro to open veins of Latin America pretty beautiful, once I finish it gonna track down an untranslated copy and give it a go. There really is something to poetry and love poems that combine with with revolutionary spirit, hate to be that guy but growing up I kinda thought poetry was for navel gazers but nah was moved to tears by some of these passages

The tree of life knows that, whatever happens, the warm music spinning around it will never stop. However much death may come, however much blood may flow, the music will dance men and women as long as the air breaths them and the land plows and loves them

Got a call from a third-party recruiter for a well-paying entry-level position. The agent helped write out a summary of my resume, and she had me confirm everything looked good before she sent it over.

Something I noticed is that, after talking with her on the phone about this, in this summary, she referred to me in third-person with "she/her" pronouns.

Even though I get gendered as a "she" rather frequently now, it still sometimes shocks me, NGL. I still gendered as a "he" sometimes, too, depending on circumstances. Apparently, at least most people interpret my voice as being feminine or androgynous with a feminine leaning because, in my experience, it is now the norm for people, if going off of voice alone, to gender me with she/her pronouns.

My presentation, in terms of appearance, is definitely far more "tomboyish" or "neutral."

I’m really curious about what India does differently to avoid having the sexpat problem Latin America does. The women of our regions are both heavily fetishized and yet one of them has way more sexpats than the other.

[–] la_tasalana_intissari_mata@hexbear.net 13 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The whole concept of sexpats is racism and misogyny, they see LATAM women as being easy attractive women in need of rescue and they see Indians in general as "unattractive".

[–] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago

Guatemala is famously regarded as one of the “ugliest” Latin American countries and yet you can still find sexpats in Guatemala City chasing teenage girls.

It’s funny you mention that because Bollywood movies are pretty popular here so you’ll see women wearing Indian fashion and men fetishizing Indian women as if they all look like Bollywood stars.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I think racism plays a part plus India not having many big coastal international cities that attract sexpats

[–] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

That’s a good point. I guess in the case of Pakistan it’s the religious stigma too. In a way I envy them for not having this problem, even if it’s for the worst reasons

[–] Frogmanfromlake@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I had to listen to an irl redditor talk about how happy he was that Ozempic allowed him to finally lose weight, which he then pivoted to say that this is the future: nobody will ever be unhealthy and will have supermodel bodies because all you’ll need are the right drugs to get the ideal body.

These people live in an alternate reality. People more or less do that with steroids and that comes with a lot of side effects. No doubt these miracle meds would as well. This same guy used to talk shit about me taking Vyvanse for my adhd.

[–] Belly_Beanis@hexbear.net 11 points 2 months ago

People vastly overestimate how advanced medicine is. Yeah, surgery is better than it was 110 years ago. But it's still dangerous as fuck and people still die.

I got MRSA from my injuries which resulted in something like 4 months on IV antibiotics. In a few years, we may not be able to treat it anymore because bacteria is becoming immune. So anyone who gets the MRSA I had will straight-up die from an infection. Doctors may not even treat it with antibiotics so it doesn't mutate into something worse. They'll just try to make sure you're as comfortable as possible before you rot.

Though I'm still dreading the job shit, at least I have one thing I love a ton, and that is my nappy hair meow-petted
