A year after the state blocked transgender Texans from updating their state IDs, it has collected information on more than 100 people who have tried. Officials won’t say what they’re using the list for.

The state of Texas has continued collecting information on transgender drivers seeking to change the sex listed on their licenses, creating a list of more than 100 people in one year.

According to internal documents The Texas Newsroom obtained through records requests, the Texas Department of Public Safety has amassed a list of 110 people who tried to update their gender between August 2024 and August 2025. Employees with driver's license offices across the state, from El Paso to Paris to Plano, reported the names and license numbers of these people to a special agency email account. Identifying information was redacted from the records released to The Texas Newsroom.

The data was collected after Texas stopped allowing drivers to update the gender on their licenses unless it was to fix a clerical error. It is unclear what the state is doing with this information.

Now entering the 'fascists making lists' phase.

Please, do be alarmed.

[–] SnarkoPolo@lemmy.world 15 points 10 hours ago

Well it's totally NOT concentration camps. It's Christian rehab camps, yeah that's it!

If anyone in TX wants to relocate to the Albany, NY area, my couch is at your disposal.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 10 points 11 hours ago

i used to run some homeless shelters out in the bay area and can help find housing out there if that's where anyone wants to look. not just limited to texans.

No it's not, it's crystal clear.

I know it's not the biggest deal out of all the awful shit going on, but man this pisses me off. The journalistic institution, top-to-bottom, is utterly failing to accurately report on anything that is going on, seemingly out of fear of sounding "overly alarmist". Time and time again the would-be alarmist statement turns out to be true, and yet they do not learn.

Every so-called journalist and news institution is directly responsible for the fall of democracy because they abdicated their duty to inform the public of what is actually going on. You can literally open any history book covering 1930s Germany to get factual material on why this is bad. Not doing so is a journalistic and moral failure of the highest order and I'm tired of pretending this is what "journalistic integrity" looks like.

"I might get sued for libel 🥺🥺🥺" winning out over "literal fascists are doing fascist things in 'the land of the free'"

Well, look at how terrible they were about vetting Donvict prior to/during his first run. Most Americans knew about Donvict from his stupid game show and the "liberal media" did nearly nothing at all to disabuse them of that notion.

And pretending that the racist nutbars that were screaming about how the "liberal media" didn't properly "vet" Obama (meaning, how did the Blah guy even win??!!!) had some kind of valid complaint, meaning bothsidering racist dipshits and claiming that anyone showing concern about the mobbed-up, washed-up total failson were just being alarmists, etc.

They've been terrible at how to deal with Donvict and his mobbed up apparatchiks for at least a decade now.

The state is making a list

Like Santa Claus? Maybe the Texas Department of Public Safety is in a festive, gift-giving mood.

[–] Tenthrow@lemmy.world 93 points 19 hours ago (4 children)

It always starts with a list.

I’m Native American, and my tribe’s word for “white person” is translated literally as “lister”. Because that’s what the white people did when they encountered the tribe. They listed everything. They made lists of the tribe’s people, their possessions, how everyone was related, where everything was, what religion everyone was, etc… Wanted to trade? They’d make a list of what was traded. They wanted to build a house? They started with a list of everything they’d need. They showed up in a covered wagon? They’d have a list of everything on the wagon. Everything got written down on a list somewhere. So the tribe called them listers.

Funnily enough, the word for “black person” is “black lister”, because the slaves were only ever around when the listers were. As far as my ancestors were concerned, they were just black listers.

[–] RagingRobot@lemmy.world 38 points 19 hours ago (4 children)

We should make a list of people who make lists

[–] bigfondue@lemmy.world 9 points 17 hours ago

There already exists a list of registered republicans

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 12 points 18 hours ago

Okay, but before that we might want to secure a monopoly on violence.

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 3 points 16 hours ago

Who lists the listmen?

[–] Alexstarfire@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

But who watches the people making lists of people making lists?

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 13 points 16 hours ago

How did it end up like this?

It was only a list. It was only a list.

[–] Witchfire@lemmy.world 19 points 19 hours ago

Honestly by the time a list is being made, it's already far gone. It starts with normalization

While it's unclear how the state plans to enforce the bathroom bill, transgender activist Ry Vazquez told KUT News she was asked to show her ID before using a restroom in the state Capitol earlier this month. Vazquez said she and three other people were then cited with criminal trespassing and banned from the building for a year.

These innovations are brought to you by the party of "small government and freedom."

When martial law is declared in October, they will be rounded up. Get out of Texas while you still can.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 23 points 18 hours ago (3 children)

Texas elections are far too locked down for this shit to matter. Look at the municipal results in 2025. Virginia was +15 D. New Jersey was +12 D. The Texas ballot initiatives were - if anything - more conservative than expected. The anti-bail, anti-tax, and anti-transgender measures passed in a landslide.

Anyone predicting a Blue Wave in 2026 for the Gulf Coast is just setting themselves up for another round of Beto O'Rourke sponsored disappointment. Abbott and his cronies are simply too good at bulk disenfranchisement, voter intimidation, and fear-mongering mass media campaigns.

[–] foodandart@lemmy.zip 3 points 12 hours ago (2 children)

Why would anyone live in Texas to begin with?

It's too hot most of the year. God's retribution for being assholes in that nature sets up the scorchiest weather in the country there, as the "global warming" that the Texas government ignores, settles in.

Fuck that place. Get out and head towards the coastal states.

The weather and the people are nicer.

[–] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

"Why can't we flip red states?"

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

Why would anyone live in Texas to begin with?

Good jobs, cheap houses.

[–] foodandart@lemmy.zip 4 points 10 hours ago

Just don't be "alternative", do go to church, look conformist and white, have 2.5 children and you'll be fine.

Blecch.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

Obedience and ignorance is just so ingrained in their culture.

I remember driving through Houston and seeing billboards for Joel Osteen and ones saying that The Epoch Times is the most reliable news.

Buccees not only exists, but uses styrofoam cups still.

It's a different world, man.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 3 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 15 hours ago) (2 children)

I remember driving through Houston and seeing billboards for Joel Osteen and ones saying that The Epoch Times is the most reliable news.

I mean, most of the billboards in Houston are just ads for plaintiffs attorneys doing truck wreck cases. It isn't as though we took a popular vote on Joel Osteen. I've actually been to one of his services and its amazing how empty that stadium is when its not Christmas. Besides, Osteen's a self-help guru on the liberal end of the American political spectrum. He's preaching business friendly egalitarianism, where everyone's invited to put money in the collection plate. I only wish Houston was fully Osteen pilled. He's the MLP of Texas Evangelicals.

If you want the fire-breathing fascist preacher, go down to Second Baptist Church on Woodway Drive and listen to Ed Young's son spit froth into the mic as he denounces everything from Transgender Athletics to Muslim Illegals to Pokemon Cards. You can shoulder up in between the Cruz clan and Ole Eyepatch Crewnshaw as Texas's O&G tycoons compete to write the Youngs an indulgence check big enough to guarantee them Hummers in Heaven.

It’s a different world, man.

You'll find the same shit out in California or New York, just in different proportions. Gavin Newsom and Kristen Gillibrand are no less evil than Greg Abbott and John Cornyn. They just ptich for a different team.

[–] Envy@quokk.au 4 points 12 hours ago

Go fuck yourself, both sidesing texas to any other fucking state.

[–] foodandart@lemmy.zip 2 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

They just ptich for a different team..

Yaah, the teams are nowhere near the same on actual social justice and expanding rights for the public.

Abbot and Cornyn and their side are somewhat retrograde in that aspect. Oh, for it to be 1957 again, when women and minorities knew their "place".. right?

Pffft!

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 2 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

the teams are nowhere near the same on actual social justice and expanding rights for the public

This line is repeated as nauseum as civil liberties are chipped away, year in and year out.

Conservatives make things worse. Liberals throw up their hands helplessly when they have the chance to make things better.

But see? It's two different pieces to the same machine. If everyone in American simply agrees not to turn the ratchet...

Oh, no. You still get the Clinton Crime Bill, the Obama drone strikes, and the LBJ Vietnam War escalation...

Oh, for it to be 1957 again, when women and minorities knew their “place”… right?

We live in a Brave New World where MTG and Lauren Bohbert can fill the roles of Strom Thurmond and George Wallace.

[–] foodandart@lemmy.zip 2 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

Oh for sure the Democrats have gone closet fascist.. An American "liberal" politician is a centerist by EU standards.. but we have to work with the system and monkeywrench it as best we can until it breaks.

Just saying the two party system is rigged (Yeah, know that) offers no real solution. Saying "don't vote" is how we ended up in this place as too many sit out.

I for one can't wait until the current crop of Democrats - gastly old bats like Nancy Pelosi, and the Chuck Schumers of the party - leave. The party is tied as long as the voters keep re-electing fossils.

Thing is, I AM a registered Republican that voted straight Democratic ticket for the last three elections, and I stay on the GOP rolls to get the press for the new candidates locally. I'm seeing exactly ZERO new GOP candidates that offer anything of value to the public, I see more coming from the new wave of Democrats.

Yes, you are 1,000% correct on the point at the federal level. The issue is money in the big elections and until the push happens to overturn Citizen's United, things won't change.

Personally I've been agitating for a general boycott and consumer strike for years - which could really sting the government - but getting the conformist, consumerist public on board with that is unlikely to happen until there is no more middle class.

[–] velindora@lemmy.cafe 2 points 16 hours ago

You have to in order to round them up and set them on fire.

[–] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 8 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Forgive my lack of knowledge, but what happens in October that leads to martial law?

[–] lka1988@sh.itjust.works 17 points 19 hours ago (1 children)
[–] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 12 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Ohhh. Using martial law to retain power into and through midterms. I get it. Thank you.

[–] velindora@lemmy.cafe 11 points 19 hours ago

Right. The Republicans are concerned about a midterm flip. The Supreme Court recently casually mentioned Trump could the insurrection act. I think that he will try to play the martial law card regardless of using the insurrection act beforehand but… If he does use it, it’s a guarantee that he will declare martial law.

So, don’t be here in October at the latest.
