Venegas was detained twice in May and June during immigration raids on private construction sites, despite being a U.S.

And in both instances officers allegedly retrieved Venegas' Alabama-issued REAL ID from his pocket but claimed it could be fake

Probably trying to use Real ID as a scapegoat. The real problem is the “papers please” racists / authoritarian round ups.

The REAL ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, enacted the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that the Federal Government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver's licenses and identification cards.” The Act and implementing regulations establish minimum security standards for license issuance and production and prohibit federal agencies from accepting for certain official purposes noncompliant driver’s licenses and identification cards, both physical and digital (also known as Mobile Driver’s Licenses, or “mDLs”).

The official purposes covered by the Act and regulations are:

Accessing certain federal facilities; Boarding Federally regulated commercial aircraft; and Entering nuclear power plants.

So Real ID was designed to be good enough for people to use to enter a nuclear power plant, but apparently not reliable enough to identify someone to confirm citizenship? Sounds like some racist bullshit.

the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) now considers unreliable, even though getting one requires providing proof of citizenship or lawful status in the country.

Translation: they found people they don't like that have these, so argue must be flawed.

I lost my real ID and had to replace it last month. I brought my passport, assuming that was good enough to prove who I am, and the dmv website said that is an acceptable document.

They wouldn't accept my fucking passport as proof of citizenship or anything else at the counter. This is after scanning my face to make sure it matched the photo on my lost ID lmao. I had to do the Karen thing and ask for a manager

[–] Headofthebored@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Lol I would have called the police right there and had them fight to ID you.

Almost like it's too complicated to be solved on the street during random stops...

Side note:

Next round of IDs can we stop putting addresses on there?

If a cop needs to know your address, they can view that when scanning it. It doesn't need to be printed on there for anybody to see. And most people rent and don't update anyways.

Even DOB too, just have a pass/fail for 21. No one needs your exact date of birth.

It's crazy we put all that info on there.

gender/sex too, why the fuck does anyone but a doctor need to know that? not like it's even correct a lot of the time

[–] wizzor@sopuli.xyz 8 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Where I come from we don't have addresses on IDs - you'd have to replace them any time you move.

Then I got in (mild) trouble with German police because i didn't. I had honestly never seen one that had it.

[–] crater2150@feddit.org 2 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

As you mention German police, in Germany you need to always have your current address on the card. When you move, your ID card is updated. They don't replace it, you get a sticker on it that is stamped. It looks like you can even order it by mail now, in which case it gets a QR code with digital signature instead: https://www.personalausweisportal.de/SharedDocs/bilder/Webs/PA/DE/Allgemein/Schritt_5_Adressaufkleber.jpg?__blob=normal&v=5

That’s only for German citizens. As an EU citizen living in Germany, I can identify myself with my ID or passport from my home country. Those don’t contain an address, so the only document I have of my German address is the paper I got from Bürgeramt.

A bit complicated, I wish my ID could be just stamped with my German address instead - the format and content of the ID should anyway be mostly uniform within the EU.

Let's split the difference: '21+=true' or '21 on [date]', so young people don't have to reprint their ID just because it's their 'important birthday'.

Sounds like a typical fascist playbook. Death by impossible bureaucracy.

Everybody desperately tries to comply with an impossible bureaucracy, exhausting themselves preventing them from joining from the fight they should really be having.

Brasil-mode (the film, not the country)

[–] pastermil@sh.itjust.works 17 points 3 weeks ago

To no one's surprise.

[–] diabetic_porcupine@lemmy.world 12 points 3 weeks ago

So I don’t have to get one now ?

[–] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 6 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Gotta get all them irises into a database so the grunts can scan you on-site. Maybe use an orb or something to do the scan and give people some crypto in exchange.

[–] lechekaflan@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

I find it both sad and funny the very bastards scared of "microchips under the skin" have voted into power this fucking regime paid by techbros wanting every piece of millions of Americans under their fiefdoms.

[–] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 weeks ago

Yep. Just another scam for more information.
