I’d like to upvote your post but I don’t think it will work. Seems broken at the moment ;-)

[–] Alchemy@lemmy.world 39 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Yes, upvoting has been one of the issues I have experienced on both mobile and desktop. Funny enough, your comment duplicated.

[–] DriftingDeep@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

How can one contribute to supporting Lemmy servers? Donations? Patreon?

[–] Alchemy@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

On the front page of Lemmy.world for me are two links, one being here: https://patreon.com/mastodonworld

Please double check this link before sending any money, it is not an endorsement from myself or the mod team.

[–] r00ty@kbin.life 5 points 2 years ago

Their comment also duplicated over here via federation. But I've also seen entire posts duplicated and of course posts without pictures (despite being on the original instance). So I think it's quite busy all round right now, causing much weirdness.

writing a completeggg proper backend for the whole Lemmy fediverse would be the best way to help. waiting a bit and being understanding of outages, bugs etc would be the second best way.

[–] Ado@lemmy.ml 1 points 2 years ago

I’m incredible when it comes to waiting

[–] aport@programming.dev 30 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Lemmy getting the reddit hug of death

[–] RaspberryJam@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

Maybe, hopefully, the last one ever

[–] The_v@lemmy.world 4 points 2 years ago

You have a cute little setup here. Let's crash the servers with traffic.

[–] Paradoxvoid@aussie.zone 4 points 2 years ago

It's the lemmy hug of death now

[–] Sneckster@lemmy.world 19 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Took me quite a few attempts to get mine up and in-between had to check if it had gone up without me knowing.

All teething problems though, all great signs

[–] Alchemy@lemmy.world 12 points 2 years ago

Yes, it is just growing pains and it will not be forever.

[–] Flim@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago

That’s what he said.

[–] Vittelius@feddit.de 15 points 2 years ago (2 children)

One way to lighten the load on servers is to host your images externally. You can still embed the images into your post and nobody will be able to see the difference on first glance. The markdown to embed is: ![Alttext](Linktopicture.tld/picturename.filetype

Alttext is optional but encouraged. If you don't want to use it keep the first set of brackets [] empty

[–] Vittelius@feddit.de 13 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Here is an example of how to use this:

The code ![Picture of a dune I embedded from Unsplas](https://images.unsplash.com/photo-1688164987143-3938a38cf69c?ixlib=rb-4.0.3&ixid=M3wxMjA3fDB8MHxwaG90by1wYWdlfHx8fGVufDB8fHx8fA%3D%3D&auto=format&fit=crop&w=2071&q=80) produces: Picture of a dune I embedded from Unsplas

(I've taken a random picture from Unsplash for this. It doesn't mean anything more

[–] teft@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

It doesn’t mean anything more

Lies, this is obviously guerilla marketing for Dune part 2.

[–] Alchemy@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Do you have an image hoster that you recommend? Imgur was popular but I thought they made some changes to what can be done without an account.

[–] myxi@feddit.nl 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

catbox.moe. You can upload anything upto 200 MB. Checkout their Patreon in case anybody wants to support them.

[–] kratoz29@lemmy.world 11 points 2 years ago

We did it, we broke Lemmy!... Oh wait.

[–] Moohamin12@lemmy.world 10 points 2 years ago

Thanks for working so hard guys!

I am excited thinking about the next year.

[–] rimlogger@lemmy.world 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

For a free service that's hosted by a non-profit, I really don't mind the site's mediocre performance. It's to be expected. Keep up the good work!

[–] Alchemy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Yes, Ruud is doing a kickass job that I definitely could not be doing right now. We will get there. I just wanted to make people aware that it is happening and it is not something a member is doing in their end.

[–] jasonwaterfalls@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

A good problem to have right now.

[–] HollowNotion@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

Thanks to any and everyone involved in putting out these server fires. It sucks, and it's often a thankless job. Keep up the good work, but don't kill yourself trying to solve all problems at once :)

[–] Boobski@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Growing pains happen and I’m happy to be here to experience the growth of a (hopefully) new successful community! I honestly love all the updates bc it just means that there are real people here who care about the user experience and growing the overarching lemmy experience.

  • (From a tipsy prior Reddit lurker trying to actually contribute for once)
[–] Labotomized@lemmy.world 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

For real! I hope the devs and everyone else involved know that growing pains are fine and totally acceptable. I know I’m not upset in the slightest - if anything it’s more fun because some stuff might be broken or there’s more posts to read about how the update didn’t work entirely or broke something else. It’s kinda fascinating to me as someone who knows very little when it comes to servers and hosting and whatnot.

[–] homebrew_@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Can’t upvote either of you, but I intended to

[–] TheGreatFox@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Upvotes do go through most of the time from what I've seen, but it can take a minute or two to realize it

[–] Gray@lemmy.ca 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I don't think it's Lemmy as a whole - probably just lemmy.world right now. I haven't been having any such issues today on lemmy.ca. We really ought to encourage people to join smaller servers to spread the load out more evenly. That's the wonder of Lemmy - when one server is struggling the others can still work.

[–] iturnedintoanewt@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago (1 children)

My question is, what happens when you try to interact with subscriptions that are located on the overloaded server? Those will still crap out, right?

[–] Mewtwo@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

I switched to a different instance since World is lagging too hard. I have no lag and can access all posts on World with no loading issues and no lag time when loading World posts or communities.

I recommend you find an instance that's near where you live to minimize server ping.

Edit: I can upvote super fast without having to wait either.

[–] TheLurker@lemmy.world 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

You are all doing the best you can and the fact that World hasn't melted down into magma is a testimony to your great work.

Thankyou from all of us who are users on your instance.

[–] Revolutionary_Pi@lemm.ee 3 points 2 years ago

Regardless of the problems this platform may have right now, I will support Lemmy. I like the fact that here is open source and that this platform cannot be undermined due to corporate greed.

[–] SomeOtherUsername@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

What lemmy devs need to do is to allow database sharding. Instead of 1 postgres, allow specifying an arbitrary number and shard by community or, maybe, even post ID.

[–] Alchemy@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

We may also have a nefarious instance user attempting screw things up according to here: https://lemmy.world/post/943832

[–] tate 2 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I'd just like to remind everyone that lemmy.world is not Lemmy. Lemmy is not having any load issues at all - that's one of the advantages of federation. Some instances are having load issues, and I'm sure most of them will sort it out soon.

[–] Alchemy@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

Thank you for the clarification. I will update the title.

[–] WeirdGoesPro@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

I don’t want to jinx it, but other than a slight slowness in posting replies, I have had no issues loading lemmy.world on Memmy today. If I didn’t know any better, it would feel like any other day in the Fediverse.

So it sucks that there are issues to work out still, but it is also worth acknowledging that the hard work by the admins has kept the site running without major issue for a lot of users.

[–] Kryptonal@lemmy.world 1 points 2 years ago

Makes sense given the influx of users recently.

[–] AccurstDemon@sopuli.xyz 1 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Not Lemmy, your instance maybe, all good here at sopuli.xyz for example, enjoy federation!

[–] Casmael@geddit.social 1 points 2 years ago

Actually reminded me to upload some nice photos - good luck getting everything up and running properly!
