Don't worry, this post isn't about shutting anything down or forcing a move to PieFed!

Basically, I've become a huge fan of PieFed as compared to Lemmy. There are philosophical differences between the two, but it is typically left to the admins on whether to implement these differences (icons for new users, icons for people with low karma, tracking karma in general, the list goes on).

Our users, meaning people with accounts on a wetshaving hosted platform (so not including people who interact from other instances), are split about 50/50 between PieFed (https://wetshav.ing/) and Lemmy (https://sub.wetshaving.social/).

What's wrong with the current setup? One minor inconvenience -- the private BVWSC Voting community.

Ideally we would all be on one platform so we all see the voting posts, but as of now it requires workarounds for visibility.

I propose the following:

  1. Turn off registration for Lemmy -- no new users.
  2. For people who land on Lemmy, have a blurb pointing them to PieFed.
  3. Keep Lemmy turned on to preserve everything.
  4. Urge the rest of our users to consider PieFed.

I'm sure there are opinions on both sides and I'm happy to keep things how they are if there's no consensus.

This isn't a cost saving thing or a lack of interest thing, as both servers will be kept on.

PieFed is supported by most of the major mobile apps, but if there's some incompatibility then let me know. I don't have a way of knowing which mobile apps people use.

PieFed does have a way to sort of migrate your Lemmy account so you don't lose all of the communities you're following. So that's cool!

Really the only advantage is having everyone on the same instance for the private voting community. That's it. So sound off if you don't think it's worth it!

As a person who has already migrated to piefed: sounds good to me!

I think the only usernames I see on Lemmy most of the time are @PorkButtsNTaters666@wetshav.ing (who posted above from PieFed so yahooo!!) and @bosshoggins10@sub.wetshaving.social . Oh and @djundjila@sub.wetshaving.social . Maybe @gcgallant@sub.wetshaving.social who has a PieFed account already, too.

I post to whichever is convenient that day. I find Lemmy to be easier to upload images to. Is that a capability on the PieFed server now?

[–] walden@wetshav.ing 2 points 1 week ago

PieFed did make it much easier to add photos recently.

There's a little picture icon, or you can even copy+paste a picture into the comment box.

What about those who come from a lemmy server? Will we still be discoverable? You cannot connect from jerboa, and I don't understand how it works from the web interface

[–] snooting@wetshav.ing 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It sounds like we would still use c/WetShaving as the main instance, so discoverability would remain the same.

@walden@wetshav.ing is that what you were thinking? Or would we move the automated posts to the piefed community as well?

[–] walden@wetshav.ing 3 points 1 week ago

We could do either. If everyone decides to get set up at https://wetshav.ing/c/wetshaving we can make the daily posts there. Leaving them on Lemmy is fine, too.

The only real benefit is having everyone log in to PieFed on a regular basis so the secret voting community gets better visibility :-)

  1. We can move the daily threads and stuff to https://wetshav.ing/c/wetshaving if it's convenient. People on Lemmy and PieFed can interact with either one just as easily as the other.
  2. Discoverability on the Fediverse is a touchy subject. If we move all of the action to PieFed, we can put a sticky up on the Lemmy community directing people towards PieFed. Also, if you search for "wetshaving" from Lemmy, the PieFed community is listed.
  3. Jerboa is Lemmy only, good point. PieFed keeps a list of apps that work with it here https://join.piefed.social/docs/piefed-mobile/

The Lemmy community has 869 subscribers who would have to figure out where we migrated to. Better now than later if we're going to commit to PieFed, though.

I’m gonna be 100% honest and say I don’t know what any of this means.

πŸ˜…

Your account on sub.wetshaving.social is cool and good, and that software is called "Lemmy". Lemmy was created by communists who got banned from Reddit and decided to make a Reddit alternative. https://sub.wetshaving.social/ is just one of thousands of Lemmy instances.

The new hotness is called PieFed. It's similar but different, but with your knowledge of Lemmy you should be able to poke around on https://wetshav.ing/ just the same. PieFed is made by some very nice, very not communist people.

Lemmy can have trouble retaining users, because if you wander outside of your niche (wetshaving) it can get pretty toxic. PieFed has protections in place to reduce the toxicity. IMO if PieFed existed during the original Reddit boycott, it would have been much more successful than Lemmy. If there's another Reddit boycott I hope it gains more traction.

I need a mobile app that works well. Is there such a thing that will allow me to host my username on wetshav.ing? Voyager will not allow a piefed user host.

Thanks for any info, I really don't have a good handle on all this server stuff...

[–] PorkButtsNTaters666@wetshav.ing 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Voyager does in fact allow for piefed. This is written in Voyager from piefed.

[–] TriplePlaid@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 week ago (4 children)

Maybe it is just that it won't allow me to create a new piefed account on Voyager...

I'll try creating the account with other means and see if I can use it on Voyager maybe?

I believe that this is how I did it

[–] pi_dash_rho@wetshav.ing 3 points 1 week ago

Sign up on the web, then on that screen in Voyager, triple dot menu, login

Summit seems to be a good client for both Lemmy and PieFed if you're not settled on Voyager.

[–] DaveWave94@wetshav.ing 2 points 1 week ago

I'm using Voyager atm too with this PieFed account, but I needed to sign-up to the PF instance via my browser and then add the login to Voyager. That this is still not possible but Voyager is listed as a supported app for PieFed is kinda weird, I'll admit. FWIW, Summit is a really cool app too. Unfortunately not available on F-Droid.

[–] walden@wetshav.ing 2 points 1 week ago

Ah, yeah just looks like a limitation for creating a new account. You're welcome to visit piefed.social and use their instance picker tool, or you're welcome to create an account on https://wetshav.ing/ if you're a wetshaver.

[–] pi_dash_rho@wetshav.ing 2 points 1 week ago

This looks like a good plan of action to me.
