I'm grinding the phases (new to the game) and I've been spending so much time making sure every build is neat and looking how I want it - but seeing the new stuff I'm unlocking, I've got the feeling that I shouldn't have tried so hard coz I'm probs gonna have to upgrade everything.

Is the the loop of the game to rebuild once I've unlocked better versions of smelters etc or am I playing it wrong?

Not necessarily inevitable, but it could happen. Be wary of tearing something down that works but is ugly if you don't have a replacement for it yet.

HAHAHA just learnt from that mistake last night

Once you know the map well enough, and how the game progresses, you're able to start planning way ahead and not need to tear down anything while being really efficient. Upgrading a building doesn't require tearing it down first, you can just highlight the existing thing and build the new thing over it.

The way I see it, it's best to just build small scale hubs where you produce specific things. If you start your first real factory with some room to expand into, you can always scale up. But once you get trucks and trains, you can pretty much build a factory anywhere where there's nodes, provided there's enough level room.

Oh there's trucks and trains!? On the console version? Lol

I don't think the console version is much different than the pc version but if you're not running a dedicated server you might make the game more difficult than it is. I love just building stuff and then coming back after a few days with all my dimensional depots filled and my space elevator stuff all completed.

I build my first "permanent" base/hub when tiers 3 and 4 are complete, in preparation for phase 2 parts. This will usually be my base for the rest of the game with easy access to all basic parts.

Same here. Once you have trains the entire gam changes. I usually move my main hub to a new one where the hub becomes more about transfer and switching of material instead of actual production.

Side benefit is you also have trains you can jump on and ride that go anywhere else in your factory

Aaahhh ok, so tier 3 and 4 is when buildings start getting more 'permanent'?

Yes, at least how I play. After I make my "Phase 2" factory, all my factories after are meticulously designed. Remember to give yourself way more space than you think you need, because you will be unlocking upgrades and new building pieces that you will want to incorporate. Until I unlock most of the Awesome shop items, I leave my factories bare but well planned.
