In case an acorn falls to the ground.

[–] Crazyslinkz@lemmy.world 84 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

*car

The acorn fell on the car and surprised the officer, who then shot the windows out.

Edit reference: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/video-shows-florida-deputy-repeatedly-shoot-man-thinking-falling-acorn-rcna138829

an acorn could be seen striking the top of his patrol car

[–] Gork@sopuli.xyz 31 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I really hope everyone at his sheriff's office doesn't ever let that one go. Coworkers mocking him is appropriate given the shame he did to (whatever's left of) their reputation.

[–] rainwall@piefed.social 44 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (5 children)

He had someone apprehended in the back of the car at the time. He fired like 5 shots into it, and luckily the guy wasent hit.

He shouldnt be mocked, but fired and arrested for gross negligence. Im sure neither happened.

EDIT: looks like he and his partner unloaded 22 shots at his handcuffed and restrained suspect, and the acorn cop resigned. It was Florida, so of course no charges were ever filed.

[–] SkyezOpen@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

He should be fired and arrested, but ALSO heavily mocked.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Part of gun safety, especially when you're firing in a populated area, is to make sure your bullet has a safe backdrop in case you miss or it penetrates fully and keeps going.

These cops fired those 22 rounds without even having a target in the foreground to consider the background of. Just "shoot and hope it hits a bad guy" without even considering what else it might have hit.

First guy hears acorn, starts firing at nothing (or the guy he just locked in the back of the cruiser). Partner sees him firing at nothing, joins in for a few rounds before stopping to wonder wtf they are even firing at.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago

On the plus side, in a decade, most of Florida will be either literally or financially underwater, because basically every property insurance agency is fleeing the state.

Whoops! Turns out climate change is real!

They also put their thumbprint on your car when they walk up to it, in case you run away.

[–] bluespin@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Can you elaborate? What is the benefit to them of having their thumbprint on the car?

[–] Vicinus@piefed.zip 21 points 1 week ago (1 children)

My understanding is that it's not for if you run away, but if they go missing, forensics will be able to place them with the car, before they went missing.

[–] lunchbox2287@lemmy.world 42 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (4 children)

This is correct. I went to school to be a cop but quickly saw how fucking cliquey they are and anyone who wasn't wasnt exactly like them isn't accepted (I was a dumb kid, forgive me for actually wanting to help people,) so I changed career trajectories. Thank. Fuck. Anyway, yes, thats what they tell you in school - when approaching a vehicle, press your thumb/hand whatever on the rear quarter panel in the event something happens to you, they can place you at the car to make a case against the owner/occupants.

[–] jackr@lemmy.dbzer0.com 40 points 1 week ago (1 children)

so wash your car if you're gonna abduct a cop is what I'm hearing

[–] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 27 points 1 week ago

Finally, a reason to wash my car

[–] cuteness@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 week ago

This is so fucking stupid, they generally call into dispatch before interacting with anyone. Just goes to show deeply rooted the fear and distrust is. No wonder they abuse the shit out of people.

[–] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Wait, does this mean that any time a cop goes missing, they need to go around looking for their finger prints on random cars until they find the cop's?

Also seems easy to beat that evidence, just say "yeah, he pulled me over and it's standard procedure to leave their prints on any car they pull over".

[–] cheesybuddha@lemmy.world 79 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

That driver looks like he might be slightly off-white. Cops are TERRIFIED of that type of person.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

off-white

This could touch off a discussion that could last for hours in my house. Off-white? Do you mean Eggshell? Or maybe Ecru? Or perhaps Linen?

When it comes to white paint, I tell my wife to show me her 3 favorites, I'll pick my favorite of those three, and then paint the walls whatever color she tells me. It's white, I don't care.

[–] InputZero@lemmy.world 63 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This is what happens when you're told to expect that every encounter with the public could end in your death.

[–] lesinge@sh.itjust.works 18 points 1 week ago

Particularly if the public is non-white.

[–] Furbag@lemmy.world 56 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Cops are notorious pussies and scared of their own shadows. Police work is less dangerous than delivering pizzas in America but you don't see Domino's drivers strapped up with one hand on their gun when knocking on doors - yet police get away with this because in their mind everyone is a criminal out to get them, and not a member of their community that they swore to protect.

[–] doingthestuff@lemy.lol 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You're not wrong, but tons of pizza drivers are strapped, even when policy says they're not allowed to. Better to lose your job than lose your life.

[–] SARGE@startrek.website 2 points 1 week ago

Anecdote: I know a guy who delivers for donatos and in some areas, he actually has a plate carrier he wears in winter under a hoodie to deliver to some neighborhoods.

This came as a shock to me, as I used to cycle everywhere and at least one neighborhood he mentioned always seemed nice when I rode through.

[–] resipsaloquitur@lemmy.world 52 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Because being a cop is less dangerous than being a roofer.

If that doesn’t make sense to you, then congrats. You’re too smart to be a cop.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 26 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Being a cop isn't even in the Top 15 of dangerous jobs. I've held 2 jobs in the top 5, and I never went around demanding respect because my job was so dangerous.

[–] ThunderQueen@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Pizza delivery for me. Among others, but im pretty sure that was the most dangerous one ive done. During 2020 no less

[–] The_Almighty_Walrus@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

More pizza guys are killed on the job than police so yeah that checks out.

Being a cop is less dangerous than being a pregnant woman (in the US)

[–] rozodru@piefed.world 44 points 1 week ago (1 children)

it's how they're trained (or how little rather). They're essentially told that basically every interaction could potentially result in them being attacked and to stay vigilant.

[–] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 41 points 1 week ago (2 children)

It's not that they're trained little, it's that their training encourages antisocial mentality and behavior and they're never held accountable when they hurt people or break the law

[–] cheesybuddha@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago

And most cops are the dregs of society anyway. Violent sociopaths with control issues and irrational fear of the unknown.

[–] themaninblack@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago

And this training causes a self-fulfilled prophecy!

When you act super paranoid and aggressive because you are literally deathly afraid of every interaction, what happens to a public that is constantly dealing with that level of treatment?

[–] itsgroundhogdayagain@lemmy.ml 32 points 1 week ago (2 children)

They always do this, it's not new.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 44 points 1 week ago

Not new but we should still be outraged every time. That this is seen as normal to most people is what allows it to happen so routinely.

[–] HobbitFoot@thelemmy.club 5 points 1 week ago

It is the reason why I keep my hands on the steering wheel and only go to move after I tell the cop what I'm doing.

[–] Etterra@discuss.online 25 points 1 week ago

Because he's a trigger-happy, racist sociopathic cop.

Note to self, remove tautology.

Can't have officials grab their ~~dick~~mommy's hand in public, so they get a supplement to hold on to.

[–] Bakkoda@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

All i see is some fat fuck with bad posture and a OH THAT'S THE COP. Well shit

[–] Formfiller@lemmy.world 9 points 1 week ago
[–] someonesmall@lemmy.ml 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm no fan of the US police but unfortunately some people reach for a gun pretending to get their papers. So it kinda makes sense to at least be ready for the worst.

[–] plant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 20 points 1 week ago (1 children)

He's police, not military. He's supposed to serve the public, not treat everyone as though they are armed.

Mm thanks officer, tasty boot! Please aim at my face while I get my registration and insurance information

[–] someonesmall@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I agree with you, placing the hand on top of the weapon (not grabbing the handle) is still a standard procedure in potentially dangerous situation. Fot example the police in Germany is trained to do this too.

[–] Madison420@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

And they accept that it's an escalation.

[–] DickFiasco@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago

He's not getting his papers together fast enough.

[–] Asfalttikyntaja@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 week ago

Because it looks pretty dumb if he had his hands in the pockets. /s (for obvious reason)

[–] sunbytes@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

He's essentially playing with himself
