Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

The personnel action was reversed, though, when it was determined that no other pilot was immediately available to operate the aircraft for the return flight.

If it were me I'd demand a substantial raise first.

"Oh, you want me back? I'll consider rejoining the coast guard for a $100,000 sign on bonus"

Wtf. And let me guess, the bootlicker said yes?

"Shit, guess she'd better start walking."

Who would be the John Candy in this remake of Planes, Trains, and Automobiles?

[–] 30_to_50_Feral_PAWGs@hexbear.net 12 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Depends. Movie? John C. Reilly. Girlboss buddy movie? Melissa McCarthy. IRL? Sarah Huckabee-Sanders.

Can't imagine having that sort of leverage & doing absolutely nothing with it. "Oh, suddenly I'm the only one with the ability to get you home in a timely manner? Sounds like my bargaining power is suddenly increased, now let's talk sign on bonuses and a raise"

The incident occurred after a maintenance issue required a change of planes.

Since when is it the pilot's responsibility to ensure the passengers take all their personal items with them?

It's a security blanket sweetie, NATIONAL security, so go get that.

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 44 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Hello folks, this is D.B. Cooper your pilot for this flight

[–] LaGG_3@hexbear.net 40 points 4 weeks ago

She can use the blanket as a parachute.

Reminds me of the time a cop lost his wallet and accused me and a coworker at the gas station he visited of stealing it. He left it at home on his toilet. Apologize? Nope. Coworker was in tears and ended up quitting. I was a part timer / in high school and was leaving anyway at some point

[–] tocopherol@hexbear.net 35 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Just shows what kind of person becomes a cop. In high school there was a kid that I'm 90% sure stole my wallet when it was sitting on a bus during a trip but I wasn't going to freak out about it, I just held a grudge against him afterwards and was more careful.

I met a former cop at a bar my sister bartended at once. He told me he didn't make it long as a cop because what people don't understand is just how fucked in the head these guys are. He said you really have to be the worst of the worst type people to make it and if you aren't morally fucked in the head you'll either quit or they'll push you out.

[–] tocopherol@hexbear.net 29 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Yeah that's the thing, there are sometimes "good" people that become cops, but they either have to ignore that goodness or get shunned and quit. My dad was a correctional officer at a state prison, he ended up being closer to the inmates and hated by all his coworkers because he wasn't an asshole enough. He was never really a fan of police or the justice system, but he said after seeing it from the inside it was like they were purposely trapping the inmates in the cycle, and the officers were almost all racist assholes.

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 22 points 4 weeks ago

yep makes sense. One of my good friends from high school ended up being a CO at the state prison. After a year or two he was noticably racist. He talked about the 'coming race war' more and more often which was just bizarre. Then he cut off all contact with the rest of us after about 3 years in. Haven't heard from him since really.

hopefully this story is dumb and specific enough to become something that follows her around.

like really, a personal blankie for your professionally chartered flights? how about some chocolate milk and a stuffy to hold on your way to survey those concentration camps.

A DHS spokeswoman did not address the specific episode but said Kristi Noem has made personnel decisions intended “to deliver excellence.”

incredible.

Yeah, like the puppy she murdered.
