Is salon conservative? Liberal? Something else? Im not really getting the joke here.

[–] Tudsamfa@lemmy.world 8 points 10 hours ago

I think the point is that she's just a normal women, sharing uncontroversial articles. And there is this other half of the couple you just wonder about how someone could possibly see something in let alone put up with him.

I'm personally reminded of the parents of a childhood acquaintance, with a nice mom and a father that couldn't even be asked to close the bathroom door when guest were there.

"But I never heard him say racist things to me and my family"

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 201 points 1 day ago (12 children)

I could never have the opposite politics of my spouse. Sure, we may disagree slightly on some matters an nuance, but a world view in direct conflict with mine would be irreconcilable.

[–] whotookkarl@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 14 hours ago* (last edited 14 hours ago)

If we're talking about politics like loudness ordinances and funding for road projects and whether the fire department needs a millage we can share the same values or same values with different priority orders no problem on the different politics.

If we're talking about whether some people deserve rights or racism or if laws don't apply to some people then it's more than a politics difference, it's a values difference.

[–] laranis@lemmy.zip 36 points 1 day ago (2 children)

When politics felt like shades of policy disagreements I could see it. Now it is either you support democracy and human rights or you're supporting pedophiles and genocide. Not much common ground anymore.

[–] bobbear@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

Most people vote for the pedophiles, though. Either through the ballot or with their wallet. They're in politics on all sides. They're in business. They're on the computer they use every day. The car they drive.

And human rights. Goes out the window the moment somebody has a bad case of the sniffles. Or when brown people can be blamed for pretty much anything and everything.

It's almost as if, the main problem isn't the corrupt deranged elite, but the system and boot lickers that uphold them.

The Overton window has been busy.

[–] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 6 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

Is it a roadrunner? Is it a train? No it's the Overton window going 120 in the slow lane.

[–] EmpathicVagrant@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago

A politically charged tv channel with specifically that goal running for three generations will do that.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 85 points 1 day ago (2 children)

My partner is just slightly less left than me and I struggle with it some days. I can't even imagine trying to date someone on the other side.

[–] binarytobis@lemmy.world 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Sometimes I think about dating again after so long, and I imagine my girlfriend wanting to wiretap our place with an Alexa in the kitchen.

[–] rumba@lemmy.zip 3 points 13 hours ago

My wife finally gave when the latest round of spying stuff happened. I've been trying to get around to building new ones for home assistant that all happen on prem, but there's a lot of knowledge gap there.

[–] KeenFlame@feddit.nu 3 points 22 hours ago

Nobody can. Egomanic psycopathy isn't attractive to anyone but the most indoctrinated birds

[–] Bristlecone@lemmy.world 41 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Seriously I don't understand how some people can handle their best friend and roommate being a POS

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 19 points 1 day ago
  1. Fear of making near friends / difficulty making the new friends
  2. Actual naivety of thinking the POS behaviour doesn't matter
  3. Weirdly, peer pressure from other people? For instance you might want to distance yourself from one friend and you are then peer pressured to be in situations with them more often by the other friends, told to build your tolerance of them

... 1 + 2 also applies to romantic relationships!

Edit: just realised 'best friend AND roomate' is just a way of referring to a spouse. But there it is, there's the low-down in my opinion.

Bro is fighting daily to contain the slurs.

[–] Kacarott@aussie.zone 17 points 1 day ago

Must be containing them in his neck cus damn

[–] BeefandSquints@lemmy.dbzer0.com 98 points 1 day ago (1 children)

It's almost always that the girl is also a POS but knows she wouldn't have friends if she lived her truth.

[–] garbagebagel@lemmy.world 63 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Almost, but sometimes also they are just in an abusive relationship and haven't figured it out yet.

[–] BeefandSquints@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 15 hours ago

It's hard for me to imagine someone being that clueless but I am surprised every single day.

[–] GalacticSushi@piefed.blahaj.zone 42 points 1 day ago (1 children)

A lot of religious folks "don't believe in divorce." So even if the relationship isn't abusive, they may be incompatible as a couple but just stick with it.

[–] totally_human_emdash_user@piefed.blahaj.zone 28 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah, I once talked with a woman who spent several decades being married to a guy who was physically and emotionally abusive to her, but made it clear that she would never leave him because she had promised to stay with him for live at her wedding, but it was okay because things would be better in heaven for her anyway, but not so good for him.

It made me really sad...

[–] BeefandSquints@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 15 hours ago

That is literally heartbreaking and a prime example of why religion causes far more harm than good.

[–] ThePantser@sh.itjust.works 57 points 1 day ago (2 children)

That's my sister and husband.

[–] frankenswine@lemmy.world 44 points 1 day ago (2 children)

your sister is your husband?

[–] bearboiblake@pawb.social 14 points 20 hours ago (3 children)

I think he means his sister reads salon and his husband is racist and also his husband and his sister are in a relationship too, it's a classic polycule isotope.

"By making others feel unsafe"

The lady probably feels the same way, she just knows better than to be honest about it because she's better socialised.
