Greetings,

I subscribe to the .....sublemmies (is there a better tern for this?) That are the main ones for subjects that interest me: Linux, privacy, .....and others, I'm sure. But they're very "high-level." How do I find the "deep cuts?"

Just set your feed to all/new and scroll for a bit, you see all sorts of stufd

[–] hesh@quokk.au 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This but I'd go with one of the all/top sorts instead of all/new if you're just searching for interesting communities. Personally I just use 'all' pretty much all the time

[–] f314@lemmy.world 10 points 1 day ago

“Weighted” is also a very nice sort, that tends to lift up smaller comms.

[–] f314@lemmy.world 26 points 1 day ago (2 children)

The common term is “communities” or “comms”, I think.

I would try to look for servers dedicated to the subject you’re interested in and see what communities they have. Keep in mind that there are much fewer users on Lemmy than Reddit, so there might not be a specialized community for a given subject. And if there is, it might be very small/inactive.

Ah thanks.

And, yeah, thank you. I'm hopeful a smaller user base will be a feature, not a bug.

[–] Plum@lemmy.world 7 points 1 day ago

Sometimes you have to grow your own community... a smaller user base requires much more individual participation.

Be persistent ♡

I still say "subs" since you still subscribe to them. It's just an easy, already-in-place word

Look at the "all" feed once in a while.

Do sense trepidation?

spoilerSmaller niche communities people might like might not have the user outreach to make it out of the new filter.

This also gives smaller communities a chance to grow.

I don't like seeing the same posts again and again.

A few communities that might be helpful:

!newcommunities@lemmy.world - New Communities - A place to post new communities all over Lemmy for discovery and promotion.

!communitypromo@lemmy.ca - Community Promo - Promote your favourite communities and ask about communities that you are looking for!

!trendingcommunities@lemmy.cafe - Trending Communities - Daily post by a bot highlighting trending communities.

!lemmydirectory@lemmy.dbzer0.com - Lemmy Directory - This community has bots making regular posts showcasing best content from communities in given categories to help promote them.

!findacommunity@lemmy.ml - Find a Community - A community to find other communities in any of the Lemmy instances.

(These were copied from a post I made in !Lemmy411@lemmy.ca a while back to get it up to date after the original mod disappeared).

Thank you v much.

the sublemmies seems very ghost towny, compard to reddits, "sub-subreddits"

[–] jtzl@lemmy.zip 1 points 22 hours ago

Agreed. This thread yielded some good tips, but I continue to bump into a common reality, that many niche sublemmies simply don't get much traffic.

[–] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Try asking in a post on Asklemmy.

EDIT: Now that I'm reading it, I realize there are way too many ways to hear this. I meant it as a joke answer to the question suggesting that they've already done what they needed to do, and now I'm sure it's even more hilarious now that I explained it. Oh well.

Theyre called communities, which I often shorten to "comm" or "comms". Mbin calls them magazines. Not sure if piefed has its own name for things

!newcommunities@lemmy.world !communitypromo@lemmy.ca

These two comms, and searching manually for keywords related to stuff I'm interested in. In the thunder and Jerboa apps that pulls up relevant communities

[–] fuckwit_mcbumcrumble@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Do any Lemmy uis have a random feature?

Ahh-- that's the program I use. This actually highlights my problem with federation*. It seems like there's gotta be something between "customize everything" and "customize nothing."

  • and if I have this struggle, people like my mom will never adopt. My dog is highly motivated to stick w things, and she routinely inspires me to keep trying stuff until I succeed. For many tasks, the benefits aren't clear upfront, presumably reducing adoption.

If we go by def 3 of MW:

3
: relatively unknown: such as
a
: remote, secluded
an obscure village
b
: not prominent or famous
an obscure poet
c
: requiring knowledge that is restricted to a limited group
a movie full of obscure references to pop culture

Just close your eyes, move your mouse and click and no matter where you end up, you'll have found one.
