I don't care how you spend your money. The main thing is that if you preorder then any disappointment you feel when the game releases and it's not what you wanted is on you. So don't complain about a situation you put yourself in.
It helped my wallet so much that I stopped working at GameStop. As a customer, you're encouraged so much to place a pre-order since "you can just cancel it later" and get your deposit back. But how often has that happened for most customers, realistically?
I would routinely pre-order and buy new releases, leave them in their boxes sealed, and not end up playing them, so I'd just have to trade them in for less than half their value for other releases. And so the cycle continued.
Why would you trade them in to GS? If they're sealed you could probably even get better prices just selling it to your friends or even ebay...
Hell, just stick them in a closet and forget them for a decade or two and they'll probably have gained value to collectors.
Or open them and play them. Now or later. I like having the "problem" of having a backlog of games to play, better than being bored (actually, maybe it would be better to get bored on occasion and use that to broaden my horizons).
Probably. I sometimes did, I think, but it was just easier to scam myself out of money and trade the games in

I think it's valid to pre-order or buy Early Access, if you want to support the developer and like what they do in general. Not every developer would survive if their game will only be bought once on 90% sale caused by their bankruptcy 🌚
If it's early access of an indie game that already has enough content to be worth it, sure. Like Hades 2 or Slay the Spire 2.
I mean indie games, yes, I also don't think content is a must, especially if you know a developer has had a steady progress in the past. But it seems to be an unpopular opinion, I see
Well, nobody can judge you for donating money when you can afford to, but also not everybody can afford to. Pre-ordering before you can play the full game is basically donating money with hope to maybe get something out of it in the future. I don't really have the luxury to do that, personally.
I mean, of course it must be your good will and only if you can afford it. Donating the shirt off your back does not usually do good in the real world.

It woulds be interesting to see what a Venn diagram of "flat-earthers" and "people who pre-order games" would look like.
I have to assume that people who genuinely believe the earth is flat aren't otherwise functional in life to have discretionary spending for gaming. I could be wrong though.
Heh. I pre-ordered games on occasion when I knew I'd want a copy but stock would be limited.
For me, it was the people who bought GameStop warranties on their brand new games that befuddled me.
Last game I pre-ordered was Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. Because it had some pre-order bonus content and was 10 % off. I didn't regret it, even though the DLC weren't as great as the base game. If I know for sure I'm gonna purchase the game regardless of reviews (which have let me down before anyway), I pre-order sometimes.
I think the only time I have ever preordered, I was not disappointed because I got a strategy guide for the game. Still got the BioShock Infinite guide, even though I have never used it.
Otherwise, nowadays, in a basically exclusively digital only world, I could never in good faith preorder a game unless I know I'm getting merch to go with it. I'm talking things like a plushie of the characters or something cool like that. Like how I backed a comic book that is also DLC for a game and am getting a printed copy sent to me for backing enough into it.
Pre-order like if the game will be out of stock soon.
I very rarely do this, or even get games at full price, but I just did it recently for Crimson Desert. I was worried at first that I'd made a mistake since the start is so rough, but I ended up loving it.
The last games I preordered before that were Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii and Assassin's Creed Shadows. Low risk, since I like the franchises.
